going to redo my brakes -----*redone*
CWLONGSHOT replied to project88mj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That tool is to flair the steel line so it make the pressure connection at the front distribution block AND where it tirminates at the hose in the rear. In and of itself, that dbl flairing tool has nothing to do with plugging anything. Also, it has been suggested (STRONGLY) that you NOT reuse your existing lines at all. They are old, rusty and most important NOT USED TO THE PRESSURE they will now have to endure!!! Install NEW LINES from front to back, complete, than plug the unused front port. BTW, about that port, ask for the correct plug at the parts store, they should have them. CW -

Broke a valve cover bolt
CWLONGSHOT replied to Virginia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
YES to both, just watch the valve cover, there really isnt any pressure there, but if its not at least closed it will leak. CW -

cherokee 4:10 rear diff in my truck
CWLONGSHOT replied to shawn's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't think I understand. Your post says 4:10 in the back of my truck.. So do you have that now or just want that? If you already have the 4:10 in the back the front axle alone is all your going to need. If you don't, you can still use that front axle for the 4:10's and then get your self a FORD 8.8 from an exploder. VERY common to have 4:10's and disc brakes as well!! You will end up with a very stout rear axle for cheap!! Your going to have to do perches and shock mounts anyway, so you might as welll do this ONCE and do it right!! I suggested the 8.8 because its most likely easiest to find and cheapest. But a D44 form a XJ/MJ would also fit the bill as would a 29spline 8.25 from a newer XJ would also work as well. CW -

Broke a valve cover bolt
CWLONGSHOT replied to Virginia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It should be easy enough to get it out, but you will likely have to remove the cover to do it... Personally, I like cork gaskets. This will go a long way to stopping your leak anyhow!! O n bolts like these, I like to grasp the ratchet in the palm of my hand with my index finger and thumb on the extension or socket and NOT use the ratchet handle at all. Tightening this way will greatly lessen the torque you can apply. Snug is good here, its VERY commom for the valve cover bolts to do what you have found. The gasket shrinks with time. CW -

I'm gonna take a shot in the dark here... you text allot don't you? Try complete sentences and re-read them before posting. I THINK you said you have a friend that will help. He has the proper tools and has done the brakes on a El Camino. As has been said numerious times, this is not the best job for you to "cut your teeth on". If you screw up, people could DIE. Let someone who knows what they are doing do this and ask if you can watch and learn. You are correct, we all start out knowing knothing. But you need to back up a bit, start small and work up. Not everyone is cut out to be a do it yourselfer. There is knothing wrong with that. I am not trying to be mean or flame you in any way. I am sincerely trying to help. Having said that, I feel the best way to help you is to diswade you from doing your brakes at this time. While I am on this soap box. Your posts would make more sense, you would sound more intelligent as well as be easier to read /understand if your sentences had proper punctuation, proper sentence structure and the words where spelled correctly. Again, don't take offence, if I didn't care or didn't want to help, I would just ignore you. CW -

been there done that :smart: READ the links provided. From the sounds of it, your better off paying someone to do this for you... Going into it and trying to explain it to you would be harder than the actual job at hand.....  No offence, but you should have at least a basic knoledge of what your asking before you ask how to do it. Read more and ask questions about what you don't understand about what you read, go from there... Many of us are happy to help. But those explinations are from the understanding taht the guy has a basic knoledge of how things work and how to do them. CW -
OOH, then have at it man!!.. :brows: :D (But I was talking to comanchekid. ;) ) CW
-
IMHO this is your best, fastest and cheapest option. CW
-
I see them "buying" a WHOLE lot more than that. Go speak with a lawyer, it will not cost you anything and you may need to protect yourself. VERY glad the kid is OK. Did I read correctly, you mentioned you where not OK, are you better now? CW
-
Holy artery clogging, colesterol "log" you got there batman...   Eat it now while you still can... soon enough age will step in and the doc and the wife will cut you off!!! CW
-
I've been there and done that. IMHO, leave the cat as is, or get a HI-FLO cat to replace it. Running without the cat WILL loose you lo end torque. Running a G.P. without a cat will be even worse AND will also pissoff Mom and Dad, the neighbors and the G.F. parents. (FORGET about sneaking her home late)The gain will be non existant unless you drive WOT all the time... Go buy a quality turbo muffler and save for the good cat mount them up and never look back. CW

MJ sagging front ( rustys coils )
CWLONGSHOT replied to Cabz's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
They are, but sadly not avalible for any substantial amount of lift... I swapped in BDS coils and LOVE THEM!!! Avalible in 4.5 and 6.5" . MUCH better, firmer and more positive ride. CW -
I would look at thet idler pulley.. Back when I was entering HighSchool. My buddies parrents bought themselves a big present when "dad" made partner in the Law Firm. Two brand new matching Cheby Corvette Indy editions, gray fading to black, beautiful cars. 1978 I think. Anyhow, less than a month later, his moms crapped out completely... She couldn't understand...as she put it, "All the gages read full". :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: Any of you not having sat in a 'vette, the dash of those older ones was like a airplaine.. gages for EVERYTHING!!! CW

HA HA HA HA HA HA Me too!!! :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: I was all set to suggest a LCD instead!!! Sorry man, we have a Miller at work.. but I haven't touched it. They guy that runs that dept always does anything I ask for me... guess he likes to do it? CW

I would first suspect the axle... but you are correct, it could be either. You need to find out. Dissconnect and plug all vac lines at the CAD. Put truck in 4WD and go for a ride and listen. Doing this will NOT allow the CAD to operate and engage the front axle, so any noise herd will be coming from the T-Case. BTW, when is the last time you checked/changed the diff oils in your axles? will these gears fit my comanche's dana 30?
CWLONGSHOT replied to comanche13's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Based om this... I would say this guy has BOTH, as the TJ and XJ/YJ gears are different. Just specify yours as a XJ/MJ with a factory HI-Pinion D30 and you will be fine. ALSO, you will need a carrier that will support the taller gears as there are two dfferent ones based on what your axle has now. CW -
The RUSTYS kit is problems with many JUNK parts. Not to mention you DO NOT need 9" to fit a 35" tire on a MJ. Juducious trimming and 5+-" will do it. CW
