CPS removal for real?

I ran across a post stating, "Some people have cured their CPS problems by simply cutting the connector out of the harness and SOLDERING the wires together."

 

Is this legit?

So the common CPS issues stem from the connector itself? If you soldered the wires together, how would you check voltage on it? Or does that fix completely eliminate the need to do so in the first place?

Well the fix was to eliminate weak signal from the wire to the ECU itself. It has to travel from the CPS to the connector, through the firewall to the ECU which can result in signal drop. Now I do suppose you could keep the connector just in case if the new one fails but shortening the length of wire is said to help with the issue of the signal being weak. I have half the kit somewhere or the full kit. One of the two.

Woah that’s a really neat fix. Sounds pretty easy too especially for not having to worry about the CPS dropping out anymore.

Yeah it’s pretty neat. Not sure why it wasn’t done early on but something tells me this fix is a literal foreshadow to aftermarket parts being crap.

Do you actually need the mopar kit or can you just  manually shorten the wire and splice it?

No you don’t need the kit. You can shorten the wire. Now the one thing the kit does have is the grommet for the wire out the firewall but I suppose one could use anything else.

Good to know. I guess I know what I’m doing if my NTK CPS starts crapping out on me

I've got the "kit" somewhere, I just bought it for the CPS. It also  has a pin to connect directly to the ECM I believe.

just to clarify,  this is eliminating the CPS connector...   engine will not run with the CPS deleted completely...

My 1988 MJ has a new pair of wires coming through the firewall just below the MAP sensor that my CPS plugs into. 

I guess someone has done something similar to my Comanche.

It also has the old CPS wire still in the main harness.

Okay. Well, I now understand that I was corn-fused. My brain translated "connector" to mean the actual CPS module on the bell housing. And I was thinking, if the CPS can just be removed from the equation, why hadn't Cruiser ever mentioned it? Now I know. Thank you.

 

However, I'm all for simplification. Is the Chrysler kit still available? Has anyone seen a video or tutorial on the process? I know it was mentioned earlier, I just like visuals for reference.

Alright, I’ll be the one to say I’m anti bypassing the connector. Now when your CPS goes, you’re doing more cutting as opposed to just undoing 2 bolts and a connector.

After some searching I found a picture of the kit mentioned in the article posted earlier. The wire harness had a connector for the CPS. This kit just bypasses the c101 connector and has you replace the wires in the ECU connector with the new wires for the harness.

 

Changing the CPS would be the same with or with out this kit.

I see. So it’s only beneficial on the 87-88s that still have the C101.
