shelby4130
Hello everyone! Hope this is the right place to do this. Just wanted to pop in to thank everyone for their contributions to this forum. I've just recently made the switch from a Cherokee (currently still have it, a 96 that I've had since 2007 and love!) to a Comanche. May or may not use the Cherokee to complete the Comanche, it's a project for sure. Picked up a 1988 that was originally a manual trans, 2WD truck.....now "mostly" (??) through its conversion to an auto and 4WD. The donor drivetrain, including ECU+engine-side harness is from a 92 YJ. I will very likely be back soon with questions, ha. Anyhow, just wanted to say hi and introduce myself, and again, thank everyone for this wealth of knowledge. Cheers! Michael

ThatJeepGuy
Interesting swap in regards to source, what did the YJ come with for an auto Trans? Thats surely not a common package over an xj donor
shelby4130
@ThatJeepGuy Good question! I was told it was an AW4 and NP231, so it's possible only the engine came from the YJ. Wasn't until you asked that I looked it up and realized that the AW4 was not sold with those YJs. It's entirely possible all of what was told to me was incorrect information. but I'll get it on a lift soon and start seeing what's what. I bought the truck knowing it would be a challenge, but the body is in pretty good shape and I admittedly immediately fell in love with Buff Yellow, haha. pizzaman09
Hello and welcome to the forum! A YJ donor for the T case is usually a challenge as they are clocked a little bit differently relative to the transmission compared to an XJ or MJ.

The transfer case is not the issue it is the transmission. It is has the transfer case bolt pattern is drilled at a different angle to sit higher off the ground than the Cherokees. But in most cases you can re-drill the bolt pattern and it works fine..

Agreed. You can get a jig that you bolt in place on the transmission and use it to drill out holes in the right place. Transfer cases between MJ/TJ/YJ/XJ/ZJ/WJ at least all have the same clocking. Same with the full size Jeeps from 80-91. Though spline counts will vary.
shelby4130
Well I'm happy to report that it's an AW4, which I suspect will make things easier as I go along. I've only driven it onto and off a trailer, so anything is possible still. Will get it onto a lift tomorrow morning to start poking further...
