Different Seat Styles

Recommended Posts

We have a thread about different grilles, graphics, and seat fabrics, but it might be a good idea to add the different seat styles to that thread. I am just posting this here for now to get more eyes on it.

First, let’s talk about bucket seats, brackets/bases, and headrests.

No headrests: 1984 only (headrests were an option)

Vinyl headrests: I’m guessing these were standard. Years available?

Cloth and vinyl headrests: were these standard or optional? Years available?

IMG_6231.jpeg.6c537c03ace33fe3bed0f622d00683ad.jpeg

Open center hard vinyl headrests: Optional? Years available?

IMG_6235.jpeg.e0b270df806fc289e0b61d53c3cb7a78.jpeg

Regular forward and backwards tracks: standard all years?

Rocker bases: XJ only? Optional? Years available?

IMG_6234.jpeg.f887beade15ea86dbd0812a7e473f516.jpeg

Power sliders: were these available at all on MJs? Years available?

All MJ and 2 door XJ bucket seats would tilt forward, but I’ve noticed there were at least two styles of seats. Anyone know why?

Wing back style: I know these were available on MJs. All years? Available in cloth only.

Standard bucket style:  The Renault Alliance and XJs used these too. Years available? Available in both cloth and vinyl.

Now for bench seats.
As far as I know, the only changes over time were the fabrics, colors, and headrests. There was also the style without the cutout for the shifter for auto on the column trucks.  The other thread has colors and fabrics down.

No headrests: 1986-1989 standard equipment, no headrest available

Headrests: 1990-1992. Standard equipment.

Auto on column style: available all years?

And for anyone wondering about the other thread I was referencing, here is the link:

Anyone have the answers to the years or anything else to add to the list?

My ‘89 Pioneer had this style in all vinyl.

Bench seats also came with and without the notch.

Good call on both of those, thank you!

My 90 Eliminator has the wing back seats in grey cloth with vinyl on the sides and full vinyl headrests.

Good to know. I looked through my pictures, look like my 90 Eliminator was the same way. This has me leaning towards the cloth headrests were only available the first few years, then later they were all vinyl. And the win back seats must’ve been the seats that came on the higher trim vehicles.

the bench notch goes with manual transmission trucks.

I gotta dig up my dealership brochures...

My 86 auto on the column has a notched bench and I know it's original to the truck.

I wonder if it’s an 86 thing. Just to make sure the truck would sell well before making two different styles of bench.

Those are the same seats I have in mine. I pulled the covers (including back seat) and put them on my Comanche buckets to retain the fold forward feature. Planning to sacrifice the rear seat cover to recover my overhead console.

I wonder if all 86 benches were like that? One design and then chrysler did 2 designs? Less a sales thing and more a design thing?

  • 2 weeks later...

From my experiences with the brochures, the notched bench seats came in anything with a floor console, even the mini mini 4x4 column shift so the seat can still be pulled all the way forward (for dwarves to drive?)

the non notched bench seats are pretty rare only being in 2wd automatic column shift trucks from the factory. And I’m pretty sure starting in 1990 all bench seats have headrests.

^my 89 with a un notched bench seat, factory 2wd column shift

wing back buckets also come in the xj Wagoneer style

also the older xj Wagoneer seats are slightly different like the ones in @eaglescout526 Chunk xj

Door cards are also a interesting topic with there being at least 6 different styles off the top of my head just in 84-96 style

Let’s talk about the different door panels too then.
I know there were the base, all vinyl, no 3 point arm rest ones, there was the ones with carpet on the bottom

and the map pocket, and the 2 piece ones off of the top of my head.

That’s fair, haha. Oh I forgot about the ones that have similar fabric to the seats in the early years.

Not only that but each year there was something just crazy different. I am glad we didnt go down the seat fabric style path here.

Oh boy, this definitely sounds like a can of worms that shouldn’t be open, you were very right.
