3.08 gears cj and mj the same?

Recommended Posts

Recently blew up my rear diff and shop says they “can't find the right pinion gears”. I can find dana 35 3.08 pinion gears online but fitment say it is incorrect for a 1988 jeep comanche with 4x4 and 5 speed manual. Is there really a difference between a cj and mj dana 35 rear axle? here's the website where I found what I believe is the right stuff but correct me if I'm wrong.

when I blew up my gears I also bent the axle.  I assume they checked for that?

Maybe blown is the wrong word, differential was clicking loudly while in motion was able to drive it slowly to the nearest shop that I believed would do good work. Here I am 3 weeks later no truck and an estimate through the roof if they have to source the parts for the 3.08 ratio.

Here is the dana part number for the 3.07 gears. Dana 73442-5X. You can get them on Rock Auto. However they are way more than they should be. Most other Dana gear sets on Rock Auto are about 1/3 the price.

The full rebuild kit with ring/pinion and bearings is only $10 more. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=5699505

Just to make sure, the 3.07 is correct for the rear axle. I always thought the 3.07 was for the front axle with a 3.08 in the rear. I notice the spline count also says 26 when I believe its supposed to be 27.

The CJ never came with a Dana 35 from the factory.  They ran a Dana44 or AMC20 depending on the year.

So CJ gears won't help you.

appreciate the help

Car-part.com might find you a used 3.07 axle semi locally for cheaper than new gears. The 3.07 D35 is probably the least desirable MJ axle, I’m sure there’s someone close-ish to you with one that you’d be doing them a favour for making it go away.

The axle shafts are 27 spline. I have never counted the pinion splines though which is where the 26 is coming from.

I think male vs female splines.

I'll confirm what has been said already.  The pinion has 26 splines.

The dana 30 and 44 also have 26 spline pinions.  They use the same yokes.  But the Dana 35 uses a different 26 spline yoke.

To add some info here: 3.07 and 3.08 is the same ratio when it comes to axle gearing. 3.07 is the number you’ll find most of the time. Your axle is the same as a YJ and XJ of that same year. Grab the 3.08 ring and pinion along with an install kit from revolution. Cal the to make sure they send you the correct kit. You can just ask for one for a YJ wrangler if the same year as your MJ since they will probably be more familiar with the YJ.

For a Dana 35, I’ve seen whole axles for sale here and on FB cheap. Depending on your location, perhaps post a wanted ad and check your FB listings. Out of curiosity, how much are they wanting to charge for the repair?

Initially I believed it was a throwout bearing cause ive had a slight rattle after having a transmission rebuild, took it to AAMCO and after ripping my differential apart they quote me $2632.07 for only doing ring and pinion and bearings and seals (no spider gears). I work on motorcycles for a living so I understand shops and parts price but the fact they “couldn’t find” 3.07/8 gears for weeks when I found them online in 15 minutes and when they did find them the cost was $813.21…. after telling him to go F himself I was able to arrange bringing my own parts in for cost of labor. And trust me I tried to take it somewhere else but they want $700 for diagnostic dis/and reassembly…
