jamespwsullivan
I know that I have read about several of us installing a new head unit that has a touchscreen in the single DIN space in the dash. Some are inexpensive and some are not. And of course there are bad reviews about just about every one I've looked at. Here is what I'm looking for. touchscreen that is adjustable in height or has some kind of swivel to allow some access to the HVAC controls. backup camera included or can be added Must work with Android for music and Google maps Bluetooth connectivity preferred No CD/DVD needed or wanted - just another thing I won't use that can screw up. prefer hearing about a unit you have direct experience with or you know someone who has experience. Thanks.
zomeizter
Browse the Crutchfield site for the head units with the features you want, I actually have one that meets all you mention, it's the Kenwood DMX1057XR. The unit is bad azz but pricey, but it's double DIN and in my JK. There are some nice ones that are single DIN with a large "pop-out" screen if this is your flavor. My recommendation when it comes to car stereos: stick with the good known brands and get the best one you can afford, buy once cry once...
75sv1
I am went through this a few weeks back on my '10 Avalanche. I wanted a CD player. That limited my choices. I had about two choices in the Audio store near me. Price was a concern too. I paid around $650 for a JVC unit. I think a Kenwood was the other choice. Mine doesn't tilt. It might be able to 'angle' the screen. I also, needed to have the unit interface with the GM controls. Mine has 'navigation' built in. Crutchfield is a good source. Also, to check prices. Also, mine was a Double DIN. And as mentioned before, the know brands are best to go with. Also, I has some JL speakers that were to go to a Jeep XJ. Well, they are going into the Avy. So, I saw some speakers on sell for $69 a pair. Regularly, $160. I listened to them Fairly nice. They only had one set. So, the other guy recommended a Kenwood set. Buy one, get one 1/2 off. I listened to them. I could heard a difference. So, for $10 more, I went with Kenwood. Kenwood is probably mid pack. VG quality at a good price. Smokeyyank
One of my friends runs one of these. Minimal issues and sounds good. https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/DVD+Receivers/AVH-X7700BT Most of the cheaper ones suck. He had ran a few and they all failed within a year. Would either not fold in or out.
FXWorks
The guys at speed.academy speak highly of the Atoto head units. I don't have any experience with them myself.
jamespwsullivan
Thanks everyone for all of the feedback so far! As I mentioned, the inexpensive units seem to have very mixed reviews and while it's nice to spend fewer dollars I'm OK with something a little costlier / brand name. I hope folks keep sharing their experience especially if they have direct experience.
ghetdjc320
So after a super deep dive into this (and having tried various double din methods) I settled on the Joying 6.2. It’s the same model @Limeyjeeper is running. Great unit. Android based, and works with both e wireless CarPlay and android auto. Built in DSP, and the only touchscreen head unit that fits in the stock radio location without covering the hvac controls or interfering with the dash. It’s not an economy line unit either. jamespwsullivan
Thanks @ghetdjc320. I had seen references to the Joyring unit in the past but had forgotten about it. Sounds like it might be a good choice to consider. I know @limeyjeeper and will text him to see what his experience has been. Does the unit come with e decent manual or pdf? Also, did you buy from Joyring, Amazon, or someone else? I see that if you buy direct there is a 2 year warranty but the lack of a pdf manual ( I couldn't find one on their site) is a little concerning. Any other pro / cons you can think of? ghetdjc320
Bought direct from Joying. Took maybe 7 days to arrive. Definitely a quality unit. I painted the screen mounting brackets black as well so you don’t see the plastic color from the side. Very nice unit with plenty of features. Plus I really love having a volume knob. Simple feature but hard to find anymore.
jamespwsullivan
Thanks again for all of the recommendations and feedback. I will try and remember to update this when I finish the installation and do some on the road testing. That's likely to be a couple of months from now. (because why would my truck be at my brother's in WA when I live in Indianapolis? LOL)
Salvagedcircuit
I ran into this guy the other day: Power-Acoustik-CP-71W. $140 Slightly larger than 1din, looks like it would fit perfectly in the pre-97 dash's. Specs: 6.5" touchscreen LCD, 960x480 resolution -AM + FM -bluetooth 5.0 -OS unknown -ram unknown -internal storage unknown I have no idea who Power Acoustik is, but it seems like they make radios that look eerily similar to clonezone market radios. Their entire product line reflects this. Even though the CP-71W looks like a clone product, the specifications and enclosure are different. It's almost as if Power Acoustik found a Shenzhen clone vendor, asked for a slightly different variant, and had it produced in quantity. Maybe Power Acoustik is just focusing on providing a better software interface? Power Acoustik is a walmart exclusive as well, which is rather strange. I think it's worth investigating. Mainland China 6.86" Radio. $30-40 on aliexpress, $50-80 on amazon: Specs: -6.86" touch screen, 1280*480 resolution -4ch, 45w output per channel -FM -AM? -wifi bluetooth -1gb, 2gb, or 4gb ram, depending on weekday -32gb emmc storage? -Android 12 The clonezone units are dubious in quality. From reading reviews, they have every problem under the sun: Interference Tremendous noise above a specific volume. microphones that don't work. carplay, android auto, bluetooth cutting out after 5 minutes. 5-7min boot times. LCD swipes that can take minutes to register no customization. usb 5v rails that are not stable. FM / AM receiver that has terrible reception The clone units also vary from vendor to vendor. Some even run windows CE. I don't know how it's possible to produce a new device that runs windows CE in 2024. Windows CE was declared EOL in ~2010. Microsoft stopped producing licenses, killed the license servers. I am wondering if the Power Acoustik is a complete redesign from scratch. I am being a bit antsy here because the radio has complete access to your phone through android auto or apple carplay while connected. In terms of security, this is quite a risk. I'm debating purchasing both and investigating.
watchamakalit
I'm not much help in MJ specific units, but I have a eonon in my 13 Silverado and have been very happy with it for a lower end unit it seems to work well.

From the Walmart site the specs look pretty impressive. It would definitely fit in a pre 97. I have a 6.5" Joying which works well, but I wish it was a bit shorter. This one would be perfect. Limeyjeeper
Definitely looks like it is just a Car play or Auto projector that works with your phone. Read some of the reviews. That is why it is so cheap. Neat concept.

It has a built in amp and AM/FM tuner, so going off the specs, it should be more than capable of being a replacement radio, but we shall see
acfortier
I purchased this one and I'm not overly impressed with it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CM68Z2V4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Screen is extremely dim and hard to see during the day. Audio quality is meh. Had a different $50 Amazon one that was way worse. That Power Acoustik one seems a bit more legit, hopefully it's better quality. Yeah, I remember your post in the other thread here. It's cool to know it at least "fits" in the dash. Preliminary comparison tests for both radios: -idle power consumption (on, no output) -quiescent power consumption (display off, in ignition off mode) -output audio signal comparison (going to look into FFT comparisons or use my HP 3585A Spectrum Analyzer) -lcd brightness (need to determine how to measure, may need to grab a lux meter) -USB power rail stability -unit responsiveness during 12v rail instability -component datasheet comparison Let me know if you guys have any other tests you want to see!
