My down pipe on my 88 Comanche short bed is broken.. and I'm planning on just doing the whole exhaust.. I found that Napa sells an OEM down pipe for $40-$45 witch i might get... but what about a cat back exhaust system? anyone know of any company's that sell them? or if i should just buy everything separate? thanks for any help that you can give! JeepcoMJ Posted December 17, 2007 Share Posted December 17, 2007 my brother just did an OEM system with hi-flow cat and muffler, cost $240 all told. that included down-pipe, cat, muffler, and tail pipe. his header was new when we dropped the motor in the truck. That seems kind of high. :eek: At our local muffler shop I had a new 2-1/2" exhaust pipe from my header, new Walker (the Dynomaxs and Magnaflows were too loud for me) free flow muffler w. dual outlets, and dual pipes from the muffler, over the axle and exiting under the bumper for less than $200. No one checks, but a shop can get screwed for taking the cat off of your vehicle. If you decide to go catless and want a shop to do it, drive to the shop without the cat on to begin with. When i lived in NC i wanted to take the 2 chamber flows i had on my 75 ramcharger (true duals with a crossover) off and put some 1 chambers on but the retard at the N A P A said he couldnt do the work because it didnt have any cats on it , even though it didnt come factory with cats, then the p-hole tried to sell me a set of cats for 400 bucks :headpop: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Hemenechi Posted December 18, 2007 Author Share Posted December 18, 2007 well i looked around and i decided to just get a new down pipe, knock the cat out and just repaint it with high temp paint. the muffler i have on it is a magnaflow, its the welded muffler not the crappy pinch seam one. and i'm just going to figure out what to do about a tail pipe later but thanks for the help ill post pics as it comes along for the tail pipe i was thinking of just going all the way to the back and dumb out the side near the shackle.. or i was thinking of just doing what CWLONGSHOT did Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was lucky to have enough pipe left off the headder to have a new pipe put on and a Turbo thrush muffler for $20 bucks. and had the local shop mount it all up for $80 bucks. so $100 into my exhaust and it does just fine. Jay :cheers: I just replaced the exhaust from the header to the bumper on my 87 SB. I got everything from Advance Auto except the cat. I got the CAT from NAPA. The pipes were made by walker. The only thing I have on right now is a bolt on muffler that I welded in place since it kept falling off. But I have found a couple of places that will work on your exhaust without a cat as long as they don't have to give you a receipt and you pay cash. MJ20 Posted December 18, 2007 Share Posted December 18, 2007 I just bought the cat $98, oem muffler $68, and tail pipe $63 from autozone to replace the po’s mixed and matched setup. It fit perfectly, only two clamps and 3” of engagement throughout. I had to buy a cheap $5 puller and modify it to remove the original tail pipe from the rubber drop hangers. That was something to press those bullet nosed ends on the old tail pipe hangers through the rubber mounts to get it off. The new tail pipe has round bar stock simply bent upward so reinstall was easy. I did buy a super 44 and tried it for twenty miles before I removed it. It helped since the manager was working on his CJ when I first stopped in for a quote. :clapping: This included 2 1/2" piping (single in/out) and Flowmaster- Series 40. GirsMJ86 Posted January 1, 2008 Share Posted January 1, 2008 I had my last 86 dueled from the manifold straight out the back. No CATs and dual glasspacks (turned out much louder then I wanted). They don't have to put the CATs on if the vehicle is pre-90 IIRC. I saw a sign that said that it was illegal to remove CATs from vehicles newer then that I believe. My 86 K-10 is dueled CAT-free also. Same place did both trucks, 200 bucks each. My next 86 will also get dueled with a 40 Series Flowmaster without CATs all SS too if I can find it. 500-comanche Posted January 2, 2008 Share Posted January 2, 2008 I got a cat back with 2.5 inch exhaust with a magnaflow for $170 installed. I don't really recomend the magnaflow though, I think there might be a little more bottom end power, but I actually think I lost a tiny bit in the mid-upper range. I was much more impressed when I went with a dynamax on my old yj (of course, it's totally different on that short of a rig).
