factory off road package?

Recommended Posts

so I'm pretty well versed on XJs, and fairly new to MJs. the XJs had 2 off road packages during thier production run, the off road package, and the upcountry package. both were basically the same consisting of a 1" lift with tow hooks, skid plates, and sometimes a trans cooler, and upgraded gears plus a rear LSD.  my question is, did the Comanche have a similiar factory off road package?

I have the offroad package. D44 rear with track lock. Metal gas skid trans skid and front axle skid. Also came with tow hooks. Not sure if it came with lift or not but Mine seems higher then average

Same here - 87 Laredo.

Also, heavy duty alternator and battery

I have my eyes on a 87 chief that I know has a 44 in the rear, and a skid plate + 2 little tow hooks in the front. In the build sheet there is a "AWE UP COUNTRY SUSPENSION GROUP". It didn't look like it was lifted but I'm not sure. If I get it and this still hasn't been 100% answered, I'll get a better look at some of those things and post in here again.

the factory lift on the XJ cherokees was only 1" . Moog makes a replacement front spring part# CC782 which would also work on a MJ,  and Crown automotive makes a heavy duty rear leaf as an upcountry replacement for the XJ, I'm sure they probably have a MJ leaf replacement as well. i don't know the parts #s though, but I'm sure can be found on the interwebs.

Crown doesn’t make much for the MJ. If you want rear springs for the MJ, you’ll have to go to generalsprings and get the metric ton leafs for an extra lift.

Yeah -- and their "stock height" springs lift the rear 3 to 4 inches.

The general spring/sd truck spring 4 leaf pack had the most amount of free arch of their packs. According to general spring, they cross referenced original MJ spring part numbers and went with the highest arch and load capacity available. My truck got about 2.5” lift from them with an empty bed and no spare. Settled maybe a .5” over time but nothing significant. Suffice it to say, it was far too tall for SOA. The 5 leaf MT pack has slightly less free arch but a second overload spring. I suspect it’s somewhere around a 1.75” lift. Then they have a non-advertised military wrapped spring that is supposed to be god for a bit more lift. Hornbrod used to run this on his truck and I believe paired it with a 3” front coil and had a very small amount of rake. Hells Creek and Rustys are the only 2 other companies making whole spring packs for the MJ. The hells creek packs seem to have mixed reviews particularly pertaining to centering the axle in the wheel well. The Rusty’s pack seems like the best off the shelf pack out there. Multi-leaf and made by Deaver originally. Problem is that it’s a 4” lift which is just taller than what most would run with short arms and no steering mods.  All other options are going to be either additional leafs or bastard packs. There is a rumor about a late 90’s early 2000’s f150 spring working. I hear it’s 58” long also but not sure about the offset.

great info thanks! ive already purchased the front half of my lift and wasnt sure what to do about the rear, i didmt want the AALs that came with the full kit. I'm thinking the Rusty's leafs sound like the way to go, i bought the Zone 4.5" setup for the front on special from Morris4x4👍
