Broken leaf spring...Standard longbed 4.0 1987

Recommended Posts

Looking for suggestions and ideas, pros cons ?  Any other vehicle share the same configuration of spring?    I would like to retain the stock spring type due to it's payload capabilities and go with SOA in the future.  I don't mind changing the leaf itself if I can find any....Thanks.

General spring makes leaf springs for our trucks in both 4 leaf and Metric ton package. I had a broken leaf on my drivers side too, broke in the same spot as yours and I replaced it with one from general leaf and I noticed a difference.

Did you send them the broken part? Or the whole pack?

car-part.com can probably find you a used pack out there in junkyard land, but there's no guarantee that the replacement will be in great shape, especially if you're looking in the rust-belt states.

I just contacted a Local Spring Shop.

Saved the Shipping, Great product, and kept the cash in the Local economy.

Just so you know, I went with the Metric Ton set, was like $100 more for them.

Please let us know if the ride height comes out at factory stock. The factory metric ton springs were NOT lift springs -- the ride height was the same as the standard suspension. The problem I have with General Spring's replacements is that too many people have reported they lift the back of the truck byt about 3 inches. That's completely unacceptable to me.

Add on: as requested.

When I contacted the Local Spring Shop,  They were very thorough with getting me what I wanted.

Be it Standard Specs, or Lifted. They Assured me, They have the Capabilities to do, what I was looking for.

As I knew I was going to be adding some Lift Height,  I opted for what I calculated, to be what I wanted to do.

Yes, I got the Metric Ton Springs, with an Added 3" of Lift.

I'm beginning to think the payload isn't so great after all with only 4 leafs?

get a pair of S10 from the junkyard and make a bastard pack, replace the broken leaf and add one on each side, after all, the dana 35 limits how much load you can carry anyway, with an extra leaf won't compress much

This might be the case...find the leaf that matches the broken one from the s10 and replace the other side(non broken) the same...adding one more might raise the truck but not sure how much...Watched the bleeping jeep u tooob video for the cherokee, he used the eye bolt leaf as the only oem leaf and bastard packed the remaining s10 to complete the set....Check it out..I'm curious if the same procedure will work on the Comanche....Thanks for all the input-Dave

It will work on a Comanche. I have a set of Comanche springs in my shed that I rebuilt using parts from three different sets of MJ springs. I also did the same thing on a 2001 Cherokee that had a broken #2 leaf.

Thanks...Funny, I have a 2001 cherokee too, maybe I should look at it's springs.....The number two springs seems to be the weak point on these trucks.

Thanks, found a set locally but haven't picked them up yet... $75 for each side complete...Trying to stay within my budget while I sort the rest of the truck....This is the only thing keeping me from getting a sticker at the moment... The jeep has been in storage since 2001.

I've known about this truck since the early 90's...A buddy owned it...He put it away in 01..dry storage...I have since done the regular ''wake up'' service...new tank, pump, all brake lines. calipers, wheel cylinders, injectors, seals, harmonic, etc....Lets say they know me at the junk yard pretty well and I have a '95 cherokee there that I've been picking parts off of.  The jeep had a safety fail and I believe it was for the leaf spring which PO couldn't remember why it failed.   I'm hearing mixed reviews about general spring. That's why I'm trying to tackle this on my own, plus I'm on a budget....It's a shared build between my 22 yr old son and myself.....My dad had a '86 pioneer, so I only found it fitting to own this truck...I've probably owned a dozen jeeps, but this one is special to us.~Dave

Does anyone know if general springs will build customs springs for the desired amount of lift that your looking for?

Look at Benz Spring and Oregon Auto Spring in the Portland area. I think they both will.

Eagle...   sorry to jump into this conversation, but I see your experience and was wondering if you could give some help on a topic unrelated to this tread.I have a  BA 10/5 Manual Transmission  Peugeot Build date May 18 1988.  This is a 1988 wrangler 6 cyl.    I desperately need  to change the transmission fluid. one car home and I need the ride.  Can you help me identify where the drain and fills are.  Photos or a good link would be greatly appreciated.
