camjeep3
its been a year and a half since I updated this thread. Nothing has happened since. The truck has been parked and neglected. Everyone tell my I need to sell it but I can't even thing about that Idea. In the next few weeks I will be moving and will be able to keep it at my house.(and indoors) So I plan on hopping in and driving it randomly... Last I went and started it, it had a very High idle. I need to mess with the sensors on the TB. I also plan on finishing the winch bumper when I get situated in my shop.... Looking at the pictures of when I got it make me wish I could go back... The old paint job is starting to show its age,( I think it was a macco job)
camjeep3
Talk about a trip down memory lane! I started this thread as a freshman in hs I have been itching to get my truck back on the road. A short time after I last posted the ring gear in the 8.8 decided to seperate from the carrier and make some metal chunks! thankfully I was close to home. The truck has been parked since.  lots of things have changed and I think I'm ready to get back on this project. I will be changing the direction of the build.... The truck will basically become a mall crawler  lots of sentimental value in this truck. I can't see beating it up in the woods. My new plans include new full fenders and flares. Factory front bumper with a push bar like when I bought it. Id also like to add the factory bumpers they put in the middle. Not sure what direction I'll go on lift and tires. I'm leaning towards adding drop brackets to my current lift. 33s or 35? I need to address the brakes. Door hinge. Some electrical gremlins. As well as the body work so I can have it sprayed. New carpet inside. Higher trim door panels. (Mine don't have speakers) and id like to add a bench seat. I hope to pull it out of storage and see if it will even run soon! I am building a shop at my house and should be done soon. When it is. It will be yhe first thing I bring over... And for the first time ever my truck will be parked where I live! camjeep3
Went and looked at the truck for the first time in a while. Ive got my work cut out. I was planning on throwing a jy 8.8 in and drive it some. After lookin at it today I just want to start taking it apart and fixing it up. Hopefully that starts soon. My shop should be up in a few weeks.
camjeep3
Almost a year later. And the truck hasn't moved. Once i have the grading done arpund my shop I'll bring it home. I did pick up a set of fenders with flares and liners. Chrome Front bumper. Chrome grille amd header panel Doors and door panels from another member here! So thats a start!
camjeep3
Well not a full year has went by! I pulled the truck home and got it in the shop. Felt ambitious and pulled the 8.8 out. It's funny seeing my welds from when I was in highschool. ( I'm a welder fabricator by trade now) also being reminded about my "temporary" brake line set up. Anyways. I got the axle on stands and started tearing into it. I pulled the Aussie locker out and started trying to snatch the carrier out. It seems loctite wasn't used on the ring gear and the bolts backed out. I plan to replace with a limited slip and new gears.
camjeep3
Got the carrier out. And got a better look at the damage. Lost a tooth on the ring gear and the pinion. The carrier also got chewed up. As well as some bolts broken off inside. I have been cleaning and draining little by little. After that I decided I'd try and get the truck to fire up. Fresh battery and some fiddling with the battery cables it turns over. But I can't get the fuel pump to run. Jumped the relay and bypasses the resistor and nothing. 12v to the pump... Nothing. New pump comes tomorrow. I decided I would pull the tank so I could get it cleaned out. (10+ year old gas stinks) Got everything loosened up and ready to drop after I syphon the gas out. Then I moved to the cab. I pulled the seats and yanked the vinyl off the floor. I figured it would be some surface rust down in the footwells but was surprised to see it also rusty running back up towards the rear. I didn't get pictures but I'm guessing a rear window leak. I think it should clean up without having to do any surgery. I think my plan of attack is going to be pull the bed and get the frame and underside of the bed cleaned up and painted. Then pull all the front suspension off and clean and paint the front half of the undercarriage as well as new bushings in the front end. Fix a few things here and there and get it painted and be on my way!
camjeep3
Got the tank pulled. Given the time available to work on the truck and the cost of the parts. I'll be ordering a new tank and sending unit. Where is the preferred place to purchase the sending unit? Â
89 MJ
I believe it’s MTS that makes the sending unit.
camjeep3
Yup. It looks like you have to contact them to make an order? I don't see an online store. Thanks.
89 MJ
That sounds right, but I was thinking that you might be able to get them on eBay too. I haven’t needed one (yet), so I’m not 100% sure.
Eagle_SX4
I ordered one last year from them (MTS) and had to call them on the phone. AFAIK it is the only place that offers a new MJ sending unit.  The part you want is JPSU-6 for just the sending unit and JPSU-6P4.0 with the fuel pump.  https://www.mtscompany.com/sendingunits.htm
camjeep3
Ordered the sending unit from eBay. I have the new pump already so I ordered the bare unit. Also got a new tank and straps on the way!
camjeep3
Tank and straps are here from rock auto. Seems USPS lost my sending unit... Still waiting
camjeep3
All my parts came in. Got the new Bosch pump retrofitted to the new mts sending unit plumbed it all when started cranking and now I have a puddle of fuel under the engine bay.  looks like it's coming from the regulator. I ordered a line repair kit. Not sure if I need a regulator as well yet. Oh well.
camjeep3
While I am waiting on parts I had some more free time over the weekend. I pulled the rest of the interior minus the dash and headliner. I pulled the header panel and fenders off. I have a pair of uncut fenders that will go back on the truck. You can see my driver door is hanging by a thread. Started getting the bed unbolted as well.
camjeep3
Rock auto messed my order up. So I'm still waiting on parts. Hopefully I will hear this thing run soon. While I had time. I started investigating the funky body work on my rear bed corner. You can see the pic on the first page of this thread... Well I followed the bondo. Looks like my truck side swiped something in the past. So. Much. Bondo. My hat is off to whoever did the sanding

I did the good ol magnet test and there is very little attraction for a good few inches. Looks Like I'll need a screwdriver too
camjeep3
I got to thinking. Whoever painted it must of only quoted a half gallon... Or maybe a gallon of bondo. You really couldn't tell it was caked on so thick. I think they ran out when they got to the end of the bed. So it didn't get smoothed out like the rest
