Speedo Cable

Recommended Posts

Gonna make this brief... well as possible! I swapped gauges out from idiot lights to temp, oil one. That was probably about 4 or 5 years ago. Speedo cable I grabbed with cluster out of an XJ. It has worked but the speedo needle has always bounced a bit. Truly not a big deal. Well the other day it stopped working completely. At the transmission the end was frayed out with the guts out.  So I’m just gonna post in the wanted section for a replacement. When I disassembled today the cable is basically in 2 parts. The first part makes to back of cluster than moves to this piece(pictured) that has 2 wires coming from it that have never been hooked up. The second part of cable screws into the black piece then runs to transmission. So what do I need to ask for here? The entire assembly from gauge to transmission? Or just the secondary cable from black piece to Tranny? I will post pics so some one can decipher what I physically need here. Much love guys. Happy 4th to you and yours.1425A0AF-6AD6-45D4-9D99-B426C97F3201.jpeg.b7393e1520725f0d28f91b2c44c95921.jpegE5A05669-F63C-4943-9C7B-528959333C45.jpeg.b6ece082d533ea6630af8b7504b04799.jpeg

do you have cruise control?

He must have CC.  Although it looks like he cut it.

That part is the rev counter for the CC system.

The short cable (form the cluster to the rev counter) is NLA.  Hold on to it or sell it.

I found that Napa has a cable that is CC compatible for sale (from the rev counter to the trans/tcase)

My Jeep is a base model. I took the cluster and cable from an XJ when I swapped out from idiot lights. That’s what I need to know here. Do I need just a straight cable that runs from gauge to Tranny or just the secondary from cruise piece to Tranny? I do not have cruise control, the donor did.

Yes. So what is the part number for cable that I need? That’s what I need to know for wanted section. I just want to get the correct one. Thanks for the quick responses as always guys!

The Pioneer CA3068 will work from transmission to speedometer. It's what's in my truck at the moment. I had what your have now and just took the cruiser part out. My local O'Reilly had it in stock.

Yeah, that's the speed controller for cruise control. You don't need it. One more thing to break. Just buy the straight speedo cable.

Ordered this cable. Swapped in yesterday. Perfect fit. I did zip tie in two places along the route for added stability and to make sure it stayed away from exhaust. Working speedo again.

Thread necro...

Pioneer CA-3068 advertises as 94" for vehicles w/out cc. I've read elsewhere someone measured one from an 87 4.0 4WD Cherokee and got 77". I'm going to assume guess that that would be the back half cable's length for an 87 XJ 4.0 4WD with cc and NP231. My 87 MJ is on the way to 4.0/4WD with AX-15/NP231, never had cc. CA-3068 also is a match for an 89 MJ 4.0/4WD manual or auto, so I'm going to believe it's the right choice. Yes?
