Manche757 Posted May 12, 2019 Posted May 12, 2019 Did under dash lights to light up the foot area not come on any MJs? Has anyone fitted some other vehicle lights under the dash that come on with the dome lights? Any suggestions for doable lights?
Ωhm Posted May 12, 2019 Posted May 12, 2019 You talking about LH and RH Courtesy Lamps? Should have both.
WahooSteeler Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Manche757, factory pigtail should be in place. LED's really make a difference too.
NEO auto Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 I didn’t realize Comanche’s had this feature. Where are the lights positioned?

Keyav8r Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 If you need some of them, I have a few pair with brackets.

The stock bulb is a 906. You can get LED replacements at any auto store for these. While you're at it though, you should absolutely install LED projector bulbs for your reverse lights. When I say it's like night and day, I mean it. There are tons of brands out there, mostly chinese made but look for ones that have the Cree brand chip in them, they are supposedly the best. Also, make sure they are the "projector" type, they have a little glass bulb at the end that helps disperse the light. Also, make sure the base does not have a flange at the top of it or it won't go in to the socket far enough. The brand I got on eBay was Genssi at Hornbrod's suggestion after he raved about them. LED selection in auto stores is getting better all the time so you might find these 1156 projector types local now. Speaking of Hornbrod, found a LED conversion chart once posted by him. This should help.......... LED Conversion Chart.pdf
JEEP_cannible Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 If you can't find the pig tail that runs over to the passenger side.I stole mine off a 79 J10 wagoner.I took the hole harness, ran it under the dash, and put the screw's back in them. Then just cut the stock plug off,and put flat(paddle type ends) plugs right into the original harness under the dash. Also has the original plastic covers, and can be mounted in the outside two lower dash screw's just about in the original locations. It was an easy fix,and only took about a 1/2 hour taking them out,and putting them in my truck.

What are you recommending for those?
WahooSteeler Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Manche757, I'm no expert but if you haven't done the headlight relay harness, that is generally considered a great solution to dim headlights whether you stick with standard headlamps or go LED. If you still aren't satisfied with the light output after that, maybe consider LEDs but they can get expensive and the really cheap ones seem to be just that....cheap. Certainly a subject that has been debated 100 times over on here so a search for those threads would be worth your reading. I have the headlight relay but have not installed it yet, definitely on the priority "to do" list in the next month or two.
JEEP_cannible Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Here's a couple of pic.s of the install if you fallow the blue, and brown wires you can see them under the dash.
Keyav8r Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Definitely do the headlight relay harness first. Not only does it improve the headlight output but, even better, it takes the amperage off the headlight switch. Even if it did nothing for the headlights, it’s worth it to prevent a potential fire. You can buy a pre-made harness or make up your own. I believe one of our members posted his harness build.
Knucklehead97 Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 The trucklite knock off's on Amazon are great, inexpensive upgrades to the headlights. Plus the relay upgrade has made a night and day difference for me. I love LED's and am slowly swapping all of my lights to them. Including making custom marker/turn signals out of 3/4" LED'S. @Keyav8r how much for a set of those courtesy lights?
Manche757 Posted May 14, 2019 Author Posted May 14, 2019 Looks like Pete should add courtesy lights to his pull list from the junker in his grandma's driveway.
Manche757 Posted May 14, 2019 Author Posted May 14, 2019 If light emitting diodes take 1/5 the power, is the relay worthwhile if you switch to LEDs? Where is Ohm?
WahooSteeler Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 757, as Keyav8r pointed out above, there is a lot of amperage running through the headlight switch regardless if you are running LEDs so it's a critical upgrade no matter what. They run @$15 on eBay and that might save you the $100-300 you would spend on good LED headlamps if you are satisfied with the increased output from your stock units.

Regardless of LED or not, you need a good clean power supply, harness is a must. As for foot well lights, look to aftermarket LEDs, accent lights or 'driving lights' or DRLs. Those work much better.

Keyav8r Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 I believe I collected the ones I have from pre ‘90 XJs when I had the ‘88 MJ. I think the ‘91 Eliminator had them when I got it from Rich, but since I have CRS and I’ve slept since then I can’t be 100% sure about that. I’ll take another look at them to see if the plugs are all the same.

Do you have a pic of the connectors that would be on the lights for an 87 MJ and an 89MJ? I have wondered about your name. Fiat slug suggest that you really, really like Fiats especially an 87 in particular. Fiats Lug suggest you are a huge musclehead dragging around excess muscle that likes Fiats. Either on target?
