some picture upgrades coming to the CC...

after the debacle with photobucket, we're taking on an ambitious plan of downloading/shrinking/saving every photo on the CC to guard against future greedy-corporation issues.  :L:   I'm also experimenting with the mass-email feature now that we've eliminated about 12000 old spam accounts, so expect one of those in the near future.

how this affects you:

now's the time to fix any dead links in your project or tech threads. :L:   any photo link that still points to a real photo will be saved and the link replaced with one of ours from CC.  this will all happen in the background and there should be minimal if any hiccups in the forum.

any questions?

So, there is a plugin for Firefox you can install that will show the PBucket obscured images inline so you can still see the pictures in context.

Example:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/photobucket-fixer/

I'm sure there is similar for other browsers.

This came out for Chrome first. Don't know if there's a version for Internet Explorer, or the new Edge. But it only fixes the problem for you -- it doesn't make the images visible for any viewers who don't have an add-in for their browser.

This is not necessary for viewing images on this site.  All of the images originally hosted with photobucket were archived here.

Will we still have the ability to upload pics, say from our phone or computer?

Yes, and we encourage you to upload images directly to the site and use the forum image hosting instead of a remote third-party image host.

Wait so my picture links are getting hijacked - downloaded and reposted to a different server I have no control of?

Can I opt out?

When the automated archiving of remotely hosted images commences, the terms of service for this site will be updated.  There will be new language added which explains that by posting to the site, members agree to having images archived on the site.  Members should contact Pete M via private message to opt-out, and choose not to participate in image archiving.

So after this is implemented all future posts with an img /img tag will automatically be archived?

If something is posted with a URL tag will that avoid the archiving?

What is the new TOS? I am concerned about copyrighted information being hosted and stored elsewhere. Granted copyrighted pictures can be easily copied and used without permission but I am not a fan of IP being stored elsewhere.

I.... honestly hadn't thought of that. :dunno:   I don't entirely understand it, but I'd be happy to make an opt-out list.  :L:

Every image tag will be affected on posts made by members not on the opt-out list.  If you post a link to an image hosted elsewhere and do not embed the image in the post, that link would not be processed.  Only image tags.

New terms of serivce is forthcoming.  Check forum rules for current terms.

This is being done to preserve the knowledge and information posted to this forum and to isolate us from any future debacle similar to that experieced when  photobucket went black.

Current forum rules / terms of service:

To be added under new section titled 'Image Hosting / Remotely-Hosted Image Archiving':

When inserting images into posts, members are encouraged to use the site's image hosting service by choosing to upload images.

If you embed a remotely-hosted image in a post, approximately seven days later that image will be automatically downloaded and archived on this site, and your post will be updated to use the new location for the image.

If you do not want the remotely-hosted embedded images in your posts archived, send a private message to Pete M requesting to opt-out of the image archiving program.

If you use(d) Photobucket, by storing your photos on their site you gave them an unlimited license to do anything they want to do with your intellectual property. You still own the copyright, but you gave them permission to use your photos just as if they owned the copyright. I suppose the other photo hosting sites are similar.

I haven't seen the proposed new terms of service, but I suppose they would be similar -- although I don't anticipate that Pete is going to claim a right to sell copies of your photos, which Photobucket does (in case you didn't know that). Personally, I think my rights to my photos will be safer if the photos are stored here than they are with the photos on Photobucket. It's a personal decision. I hope our members won't opt out, because the photos are invaluable.

Thanks for doing this, I hate those greedy little bastards too. Everyone wants a piece of my penny these days. But advise is still always free, even when you don't want it. lol! Do we need to resend any of our pictures? Not that I know where any of them are, but I do know where my tools are, at least most of them :)

cheers

Pete is asking that members check posts they've authored and make sure all the images are in good order, and if not to edit and fix the post.  If the images in your posts are all showing up, there's nothing to do.

all I want is for future generations of owners to see the pics that are in your posts, in your posts.  nothing more.  :L:  I literally can't imagine why I would ever want "ownership" beyond the preservation of the collective knowledge.

but you bring up a good point about continuing that on should I get hit by a meteor.  I'll look into that.

Something to this effect should be added to the rules/terms to ease member concerns.

For sure. I can't believe anyone would want to claim any rights over images of an obscure vehicle that 99% of the population doesn't even know existed. Much ado about nothing...

I've seen other instances where some idiot has used a random photo they found on the internet to hock their cheesy wares (I think it was on ebay?) and they used a CC member's truck.  I'm just saying I can't imagine doing such a thing.  everything I've done for almost 20 years now is for the betterment of this place and the preservation of the information it contains.  that's not going to change. :L:

I have appreciated the input and collective experiences all have posted on the ComancheClub and the old Yahoo Comanche group.

Also appreciated the collective photos posted and shared here to further the collective knowledge or just plain share.

I hope the community continues to share pictures and knowledge as the Comanche Club seeks to preserve this information for all of us.

Hope this makes sense.  I really see no bad things happening from this that would not, could not happen another way.
