2door cherokee seats hiccup

Recommended Posts

so the other day's venture to the junkyards wasn't going well until I stubbled upon a thrashed 85 2door XJ with these near perfect black buckets.  yay!  :D  when I got home I discovered that only the passenger seat folds forward.  and by that, I don't mean the drivers side mechanism is broken, I mean it's non-existent.  there's no lever to actuate it, no hinge, no catch.  :dunno:  by all other accounts it perfectly matches the pass side.  what the hell?!  I thought 2door seats all folded forward.  is this an early model difference?

I have those exact same seats, carpeted back, only drivers side folds forward, out of an 80's XJ.  I think it was a 2 door but I honestly don't remember anymore.  They also have the rocker type sliders.  Haven't installed them yet.  I've got another set (different fabric) that does have the fold forward on passenger side.  Going to mix and match till I get what I want.  Too many other things to do first.  You didn't happen to pick up a set of black arm rests you want to sell me did you? :))

I mixed and matched at least 6 pairs of bucket seats before I finally made up a good set.  Then I added a storage pocket to the back of each seat.

they might have been in acceptable shape.  so much of the interior was just trashed that I don't remember looking at them specifically.  If I get back there I'll check it out. :L:

Thanks, much appreciated.  Nice to know that the rear arm rests work also but the fronts are much preferred.

How did you do that John?  Pics?

This is a removable piece from the back of the seat on very early XJs.  Like those pictured by the OP above, except with a pocket built in.  This might be what John is referring to.

The slide levers look different.

Someone swapped, apparently.

I suspect those seat bases are a matched pair.  Those are the "rocker" type seat bases.  See the "paddles" that face inboard?  Those control the "rocker" motion.  The plastic-tipped round metal rod levers control fore-and-aft.

My 79 K5 Blazer passenger seat has a lever that allows the entire seat to flip forward for access to the back seat.  The driver seat does not.  I've never found or noticed this, but I suspect this might be the case for very early 2 dr XJs, based off this post.  The idea being that back seat passengers get in the on the passenger side.  The early "extra cab" Chevy Silverados only had a door that opened on the pass side from 98-2000.  2001 was the first year for suicide style opening rear doors on both sides.

Has anyone ever seen a bench seat like an mj in an an early xj across the front instead of buckets? I have 3 different times over the past 13 or so years and always wondered if that was actually a factory option.

I've never seen one, ever, and I've searched junkyards from Hawaii to Virginia over the last 30 years.  Not saying they don't exist, but I've never seen one.

Is that back of an 84-86 xj wagoneer? The red one with map pockets? I think that is where I have seen them. My 91 xj limited had these leather ones. The driver seat is electric and the passenger is not. I have seen several that way.0510182127.jpg.132b83fa8584aee1a7c823ebe3cca072.jpg

That red panel with the pocket came from a 1986 XJ 4 dr Laredo package.  I used the seat frames in my XJ because they were the "rocker" type bases like the OPs.

I used to own an 89 XJ Wagoneer.  Wish I'd kept it.  It was power seats, both sides.  My experience in looking at a bunch of XJs, is that  driver and pass power seats went away with the switch from Renix to HO.  HO are only power on the driver side, like your 91.

Don,

Just had the upholstery shop take material from the rear of seat backs I was not going to use and make the pockets as in this picture:
