Jeep build sheet lookup

Found this cool tool today that could prove useful to some of us.

If you hit "equipment listing" on the left column, it lets you plug in a VIN and get the build sheet, without having to email Chrysler or go to a dealer, or whatever.

It does come with the disclaimer that it only works on vehicles that were built after 1998, which is when ChryCo started requiring digital input of the build records, although many existing paper records were input so you can still get lucky on earlier builds. My MJ's build sheet came up, but as anyone who has contacted Chrysler for their build sheet will know, some of the AMC option codes have been reused by newer model Chrysler products, which may suggest some rather interesting options. Apparently my MJ has the "southwest edition" package which I guess is what includes the "door armrest storage light" and the "power rack and pinion steering".

Apparently my '91 2WD came with a shift on the fly transfer case, the Italia Package, and an alcantara steering wheel :roflmao: Everything else is correct though.  Does anyone know the significance of the spring groups? Apparently my truck has Group VIII front and Group I rear springs. Also I apparently have the VIN memorized.

My '89 was actually more highly optioned than the '91 when new, coming with a radio(!) and mini console. Same springs as the '91. Doesn't say the paint color but does mention Atlanta. Maybe that's where it was shipped to?

Interesting!

I have a glovebox lamp??  Had to go look. Sure enough, a tiny bulb, pointing backwards into the box that I would have never noticed. Burnt out, of course.

For you guys that know your trucks came with an OEM rear bumper, is it listed on the sheet?  My truck didn't have a stock rear when I got it and I don't see a rear bumper on the sheet.

And anyone know what "belt moldings" are?

Mine came with a stock rear bumper but it's not on my build sheet.  The front bumper is, though:

I Suspect you'd have a "rear bumper delete" option, or a "Chrome rear bumper" or "rear tube bumper" if it had something out of the ordinary. Front bumper doesn't surprise me that it's on there either because you could get painted black, painted body colour, chrome, or painted a secondary trim colour... my '92 XJ is black cherry with silver flares, bumpers, etc.

Once you replace this don't overload the glovebox so it doesn't keep the light on and drain your battery... Not end of the world drainage if you drive every day, but if you leave it parked for a week or two at a time, in the winter... Yeah. No bueno.

No mention of a rear bumper on mine, but does mention the front bumper like everyone else.

Took another look at the one for the '91 - it says Memphis, TN zone. I know the truck was sold in Dickson so this tool gives a rough idea of where the truck came from. Neat!

The forum I picked this up on, the guy was suggesting the selection of what got in and what didn't was mostly which box of files got picked up at random on day X, before '98. I would guess that the older the vehicle the further back in the room it would be buried. Chrysler historical supposedly has most of the paper copies and can look them up too.

My says zone for Alberta but I know from other Chrysler records (dealer lookup) that it was sold 1000 miles away in MB, build date Jan 22, in-service feb 8th. So I don't know what the zone thing really means.
