need more info.  17" rims (assuming the are of the proper backspacing) won't affect anything with fitment.  tire size is what does that.

If you had the right adapter...with a 17"rim as long as you mounted tires with a side wall 7" or under....you would not have to lift

A 235/75/r17 would fit (if such a tire exists)

Here is how you calculate the size of a tire...

235= the width of the tire in mm...convert that to inches and you get 9.25"

75 is the size of the side wall shown as a percentage of the width..176.25mm 0r 6.938 inches

r17 is the rim or 17 inches

so if you take the side wall height x 2 + the rim you get (6.93 x 2) + 17 or 30.86".....We will say 30 7/8" to round up. So smaller than 31

If you choose a tire that has a 70% or 65% profile ....or a narrower tread width you would have even more room

A 235/75/r17 tire is slightly over 30" tall. 30.3" on a couple I looked up. So 17's would fit with the right tire and offset it appears.

255/75/17 works out to 32.5". 32 is the max diameter people keep quoting on here, with probable rubbing on lca's and fender liners at full steering lock. Given they'll be spaced out a bit, the fender liner rubbing will be worse.

But I think 4.5" may be a little more lift than the absolute minimum necessary.

3" would probably be the smallest lift you could do. And even then would probably rub slightly at full lock.

This is exactly true. I know from firsthand experience.

I have the standard JK wheels on mine right at 32" and get rubbing during certain turns but it isnt enough to damage the tires. I'm at about 1 1/2" over stock 2wd ride height. I'm not sure I'd have the same experience with the MT's you have though.

I don't see how, I have 265/75r16s on 4.5" of lift with trimming and they crush my fenders with the sway bar disconnected. If it is a street truck then it might be ok. If you plan to wheel it leave the sway bar connected....

Or your fenders will look like this.
