Archaeor
Every time I fire up the Renix, when it starts there's what sounds like an excessive amount of valve train (rocker arm?) noise which lasts a second or two, then immediately stops. Oil is fresh and clean. Normal, or something to worry about? It's really loud...... Thanks, Rick
Tj1
mine does the same thing, but I blame the oil running down back to the pan while sitting.
Eagle
Remember the Jeep engines use hydraulic valve lifters. They need oil pressure to pump up -- until the pressure normalizes, the lifters may be partially collapsed, which results in lifter noise.
cruiser54
Is there an engine miss associated with the noise? What brand of oil filter are you using? Many replacement oil filters have horrible anri-drainback valves in them, which causes "dry" starts.

big66440
I had the same exact problem before my last oil change, I'm using a K&N oil filter and NAPA synthetic oil ( re labeled Valvoline ) now and haven't had the issue.
Archaeor
Thanks for the info. The MJ is up at my cabin right now, so I don't know what oil filter I'm running, but if it's a POS I'll swap it out for a Wix and see what happens. Thanks...... SVPete
Since I still have my original engine, I use Lucas oil stabilizer (not a promo) which keeps lubricant up on the rocker arms and the like. I had the "clatter" you are likely hearing until I started using it.

I had the "clatter" you are likely hearing until I started using it. which oil filter? Typically it was Fram, which would come from the various oil changing outlets. Current filter is STP. I am now engaged in doing my own periodic maintenance this century and have done a lot to my truck in the last year. Finding this club really motivated me into preserving the truck. Minuit
Fram is a big no no, and I've heard of problems with even Purolators recently. Wix is a sure bet for quality. They go on anything that I'd like to survive the next 3-5,000 miles.

What real difference does a Wix filter make?
cruiser54
The anti-drainback valve is a huge issue on our Jeeps which have the oil filters mounted upside down. Crappy valves=longer time to build oil pressure and oil flow to the bearings on start up. Wix has good ones. Many others have crappy ones or none at all. Minuit
Echo what Cruiser said. My '91 builds oil pressure noticeably faster with a Wix than with any other filter. Adding to that, the Wix has overall higher build quality and the filtration media has more area and is of higher quality. More expensive, but more than worth it to me. Here's a comparison I found on another site: The wix is way more... uh, skookum overall.

You mean like this? The '91 and '89 are both like that. Easy to see why a good ADBV is necessary. (and for shame, that's not a Wix filter )
cruiser54
Yep. But HO is still on it's side.....
HOrnbrod
Lot better than upside down. At least it's 1/2 full. But I agree - Fram sucks for more reasons than just the anti-drain back valve. I use the large Purolator filters myself.
Rockfrog
HO was mounted upside down as well until sometime in 93 ... As my old 91 was upside down from the factory, as was the 93 parts XJ motor I have (I pulled the motor, carved the XJ like Turkey). HOrnbrod
^^ Correct, and I didn't know this. According to the parts manual the oil filter adapter change occurred on the models mfg. after 7-16-92. But the 91-95 XJ/MJ models used the same block (casting #53008405), so a simple change to the newer adapter will allow the oil filter to be mounted horizontally like in my pic above. Sounds like a good junkyard mod..........
SVPete
Well, hopefully Archaeor got something out of this besides I've been using the wrong oil filters for 28 years.
