Jackrabbit41
Blew up my rear drive shaft and made it home 5 miles with just the front going. But when j got home there was ATF on my rear axle, should I no drive it around without the yoke on the output shaft? How could ATF from the transfer case even get back there? Also could someone hit me with a stock length of a long wheel base drive shaft? thanks!!
DirtyComanche
Without a SYE, if you have the rear yoke out of the tcase it will dump all the ATF. The tcase is actually pressured lubed, there's a gerotor pump in it, so it sprays pretty good when you get up to speed. If you put the yoke back in, it will probably fall out... IMHO, half the advantage of a SYE is you can pull the shaft and not worry about it puking. Hence I'm a fan of them, even though we don't normally 'need' them. Id get one buy i am saving for a stroker kit so I'm just going to replace it with a stock one for now.
Jackrabbit41
But if someone could get me the length that'd be awesome!
Strokermjcomanche
Instead of a SYE you can go with a 96 and newer tcase that you can pull the rear shaft on and being it's sealed no ATF will leak out . gogmorgo
When I swapped my drivetrain last summer, it took me a bit to get new ujoints for the rear shaft. I drove around (short trips only) with an old t-shirt tied over the output. It wound up ATF soaked, but I didn't end up losing too much.
Jackrabbit41
So looks like 50 inches. Is that yoke to yoke or what?
ParadiseMJ
Eye to eye on the shaft. Not including the slip yoke portion.
88whitemanche
Put the yoke on(transfer case) slide out 3/4"-1" then Measure eye to eye...measure twice pay once... I messed up having to pay twice to cut my driveshaft for not sliding out 3/4"-1" for yoke movement...

This probably is a stupid question but what do you mean when you say eye to eye? like the center of the bearing cap?
MancheKid86
exactly, and since your lifted, you cannot use stock lengths any more, so measure up hahah
Jackrabbit41
exactly, and since your lifted, you cannot use stock lengths any more, so measure up hahah The stock shaft was actually perfect because of the yoke convertor for the 8.8 it moved the driveshaft back to the stock position. 88whitemanche
Iirc tom woods makes them for $200 shipped... I'm not sure if he is still providing the yoke parts for driveshafts anymore... If I recall someone here mentioned it but I'm sure he can make something up for you...

If I recall someone here mentioned it but I'm sure he can make something up for you... His site says $219 for an OEM XJ rear shaft, so I'm guessing an MJ version would be a bit more due to length. Seems like he includes everything. He's about $500 for the AA SYE and a basic driveshaft to go with it.
Megadan
Check locally too. I have a shop a mile from my house that can make a basic steel driveshaft for $200-300 depending on what is needed. That's custom length and fully balanced.
Minuit
The shaft for my '91 cost $225 out the door from a reputable local shop.

DirtyComanche
Yeah, if you dent them they tend to fold up pretty easy.
