Quitting My Job Tomorrow

Just wrote my letter of resignation and I think I'm already over it. I've been working in education at a technical college for the last seven years and it's been time to move on for the last couple years now. Things have gotten sour in my department, the students just aren't what they were, and I'm tired of cleaning up after those who either don't care about what they're doing or why they're in school. I really should've done this over last summer when it would've been convenient for the rest of the world, but this really isn't about them though, is it? This is about keeping my sanity and leaving when it makes the most sense to do so for me at this point.

What's next? Before I started at the college, I worked in fabrication and repair. I loved it! The problem came in that it was a small shop and I was working for the boss and the boss's son... and I was never right regardless of who I listened to. Then I changed gears to work in the same welding department that I was a student of in 2005. Fast forward to now and I'm just barely happy enough to be moving back into the working side of my industry. Working for a small shop?... never again... too many family drama. Working for the state?... never again.. too much bureaucracy. For now, I'm just a welder on a shop floor building bridges. I think I'm looking forward to it?... the jury still out. For now I think I'm more happy about just taking care of myself and giving my wife a much needed break from listening to my nightly complaints.

Anyhow... I digress. You could just about check the scoreboard on how well I am with change, but lately I don't think I can get enough of it.

You're a skilled and talented guy Ben, but I think you're stifled up there and limited creatively. It's probably time to relocate to an area where you can write your own ticket once the word of your work gets out. Colorado comes to mind..............

I resigned from the utility field at the end of September, I had put in 7 long years as well. I took the opportunity to do a 180 in my career path and moved into a banking position. I feel much happier and my wife has noticed I am less grumpy.

Sometimes change is good ;) No matter what you find yourself doing I have no doubt you'll do great.

Hu... well that was kinda fun. After I handed in my walkin' papers I started honestly answering the typical hallway question from everyone of "Hey! How's it going today?!" with "Great! I just quit!" that was followed up with the same shocked look over and over. Couple people didn't even believe me. Still not completely happy with my decision, but that shop is clearly too small for the three of us who are supposed to be running it. Last day is next Thursday. After that, all I worry about it me.

Thanks again, all.

I would say, "Best of luck to you," but we make our own luck so you don't need any more from me. A great many years ago, the first boss I worked for after getting my degree told me that one decision never matters in life. What matters is that, once you make a decision, you have to make all your subsequent decisions support that one. If you can do that consistently, you'll have it made.

Some things were said that I thought were over with. A fellow employee I've shared words with in the past apparently wanted to end things trying to twist the knife one last time rather than leaving past conversations remaining as such. There was an all too familiar silent treatment all morning, good performance in front of other school workers at the going away party, then a few snide comments, all followed up with just slipping away without at least a professional hand shake or "good luck".

It's sad when I've been passing people in the halls and hearing the same comment of "I understand... I couldn't work with him either". Funny how things work out, eh? Up and coming young guy tries to make a difference for the better only to get shut down over and over by someone who's too comfortable in their position and isn't thought highly or respected by so many.

It only takes one bad apple to spoil the lot.

I'm dealing with a very similar situation at my current place of employment where there has been a steady decline in morale followed by an unusually high turnover rate that is typically only observed in the retail store industry.  Frivolous policies and procedures have been put into place that are supposedly there to protect employee well-being and to help create a more efficient work-flow.  It's basically one man's idea on how a company should be run and it's his way or "don't let the door hit you on the way out."  This man touts that he has decades of experience running international, multi-billion dollar corporations yet he somehow is unable to manage a small business of 60 employees.  He's incredibly difficult to work with and he demands that everything must go through him before it is approved, but he's not able to approve anything in a timely manner - he's a complete bottleneck to the company.  The best part is that has convinced the owners of the company that he is not the rotten apple, but others within the company (I'm sure myself is included since I butt heads with him on a regular basis) are bringing down morale.

Be fortunate that you've found something else to move on to.  I haven't been so lucky yet...
