Blue88Comanche
Last May a few days before my read axle bit the dust, I replaced the thermostat. I think i ended up with a 160F thermostat or it is stuck open... It is not reaching proper running temps. 1st question, is 195F the stock thermostat 2nd question, would the 160F thermostat cause the engine to think it is not warm enough and cause it to always add extra fuel thus murdering my fuel economy? yxmj
I do not know if it is stock (seems the #180 comes to mind) but I run 195's in all my 4L's as well as the 2.5....I find they seem to run the best at around 100*c :dunno:

Get the factory thermostat with the jiggle valve. 2nd question, would the 160F thermostat cause the engine to think it is not warm enough and cause it to always add extra fuel thus murdering my fuel economy? If it's stuck open, yes it could.

HOrnbrod
Thanks for the replies, I plan to stop by the auto parts store today. Doubt you will find a regulation factory thermostat at the auto parts store. Part # 83501426 is the one you need.
gogmorgo
What's the "jiggle valve" for, if you don't mind?
FrankTheDog
For letting air out of the head so there are no air pockets. Which lead to overheating.
Blue88Comanche
I guess that little valve needs to be oriented towards the 12 o'clock position?
HOrnbrod
That's what I always do because that's what the FSM says to do. But I've read also the 6 o'clock position is okay too. I don't think it really matters.

Same stat.
Jeep Driver
You may or may not find this interesting- https://coolviewthermostat.com/ A couple of weeks ago I went to the dealer to get a new stat, dealer stated that none were in stock nor in the system, but that he could order it but could not promise when it would be in. I complained to him about the BS Stant stats that are unreliable. He told me to get one from NAPA, that the NAPA Stants are different than the box store stats. I got the NAPA 180 and I've had no trouble since. He also told me that Mopar stats are made by Robert Shaw.........take that for what it's worth as I can find no confirmation of it. cruiser54
I've had to warranty 4 Napa/Stanton superstats. OEM stats are now MotoRad.

gogmorgo
I definitely grabbed a MotoRad tstat when I got mine. Don't remember if it was just a "normal" one or their "Fail-Safe" line. It's only been in there a couple months, and so far so good. Even without the block heater plugged in I can start it at -30ºF and have heat within a couple minutes. The gauge does fluctuate a bit, but then again, when you've driving around mostly below 0ºF, you've got a lot of cooling with the thermostat open. It typically sits just under the 200ºF mark. The lowest temperature thermostat you can get away with is a 180-degree. With the 160, the sensor that tells the ECU when to switch from open loop (warm-up) mode to closed loop (normal run) mode never tells the ECU to switch modes. In open loop mode, the air-fuel mix is basically not adjusted by input from the various sensors, it's based on a pre-programmed fuel "map." Rockfrog
Been using MotoRad thermostats from the local Canadian Tire here for well over two decades ... usually the Failsafe variety ... never had an issue. recently put a stant in my 88 MJ and it's running a steady 160 degrees ... so picked up a MotoRad Failsafe 195 to replace it eventually. Blue88Comanche
Replaced the thermostat today with a 195. It seems to be working properly now. The store did not have one with that little valve, so I drilled a small hole about where it is located in the pic above. The old thermostat was labeled 195, I am going to test it later to see what was going on with it.
Oly
195 is oe recommended temp. drilling a hole is totally fine to do. most thermostats now days don't come with that "jiggle valve" anymore. not sure why.... i recently replaced mine as well in my 2.5 and it is doin great
