Tell It To Me Streight Doc....

Recommended Posts

Tell me straight up. My Comanche albeit otherwise perfect has a bad case of the puegot transmission. How bad is that hunk of French metal? I already have a problem shifting into 2nd if the truck has been sitting. How hard is an Ax15 swap and approximately how expensive? Should I also go ahead and switch to a HO 4.0? Can I keep my interior controls If I do?

You've been reading stories on the Internet again, haven't you?

My '88 XJ has the BA 10/5 transmission. I'm currently at 287,000+ miles, and no tranny problems. Yes, it doesn't like shifting into 2nd when cold -- the solution is to "granny" shift it from 1st to 2nd, at a very slow road speed. News flash: the AX-15 doesn't like shifting into 2nd when cold, either.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Peugeot tranny if you don't abuse it.

Eagle nailed it.  I my self had a Peugeot trans in my my.  Mine went over 300k and to be honest its still going.  I pulled it because I wanted a aw4 for the 4x4 swap.  I to had the 2nd gear prob when it was cold out but after a few shifts its good to go.  This is the very first time ive come to defend that poor old trans and it deserves it.  I drove that thing when my family first got it with 18k on it like I stole it.  I was seriously chirping 3rd as often as I could get someone to come on a ride along.  lol  it even has a camper shell on it then.  after I got it a few years ago it had around 280k and I still hit the damn gears as hard as I could at least once every time I drove it.   I expected it to break but it never did.  give that French turd its dues, I do.  mater of fact if you need a back up or parts ( not that they are better then what you have) ive got a spare just chillin here lol.

If you're wheeling it hard, make the swap... if its a weekend warrior just run it until it breaks. My first MJ had the Frenchy trans and it was over 200k before self destruction. My current MJ I purchased with an external slave ax15 but honestly... I don't notice a difference in regular driving. I only notice a difference in real quick gear changes on the rocks. Which both will have a slight grind into gears but the BA10 was just a bit longer and louder. But I agree with everyone above... it can last longer than the internet tells you it can if you don't drive like the skinny pedal is the only pedal

My mj has the Frenchy trans and I learned how to drive with it. Not saying I'm a pro driver but it hasn't failed me yet.  Yes I've done dumb things with it, example, motor mount was bad, I  rev it because it was cool feeling the motor rock the truck, felt like hot rod yeah it put a hole in my exhaust manifold but ,hot rod!. Donuts in the field,or load it down with pallet of shingles for work, it still going strong. It's the dam electrical that's killing it. Renix yay......

Puegeot tranny from 13miles on the OD new to my ax-15 swap a year ago never failed me once, aside from the clutch throw out bearing leaking like a sieve at a stop sign in rush hour traffic in 1995.  It use to scratch third like some claim for me as well back in the day.  Did I give it its fair sure of abuse, yep.  I drove it like I stole it......  I swapped to an AX-15 to convert to 4wheel drive a year ago.  How hard is it?  Depends the last time the tranny was out of the truck and your mechanical apptitude.  I had to use a 'come along' to seperate the tranny from the block.  (The input shaft was seized to the input bearing.)  If you can turn a wrench, its pretty straight forward.  And looking at your resume list of vehicles in your bio, it would appear you're not stranger to doing the swap.  As for as the cost....  Depends where you source your parts, from a junk yard or a parts supplier.  I got my tranny and transfer case from a supplier.  I paid more than if I got it at a pick and pull.  I didn't have to pull the parts, the mileage on them was under 100k and came with a warranty.  It comes down to what you think your time is worth versus the parts total worth.  At the time, my time was worth a lot........  As for the HO swap, can't help you there....

My '88 has a BA10 and has 190,000 plus on it (no speedo cable on it when I got it). Didn't shift very well until I drained and re-filled the transmission. Very little fluid came out when I drained it. Now shifts almost as well as the AX15 in my '91. Drive it until it breaks and then change it.

I actually did replace the gear oil recently. I used Lucas with the lucas additive that is supposed to help older transmissions. It helped tremendously, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Has anyone ever swapped in a Nv3500 or NV4500 into these trucks? I love the trans in my wrangler. I abuse the crap outta it. I will most likely drive the puegot till it breaks though because my budget is scattered everywhere

When/if you do change the fluid (which should be done at regular intervals), fill her up with RedLine MT-90 (75W-90 API GL-4).

I was hoping someone would chime in with a good gear oil to use.

I put it in my AX15 when I did the big overhaul on my MJ and it shifts really smoothly.  Even on a cold day, shifting into 2nd gear is muy bueno.
