GEN1dawg91 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 hello I'm new to this forum I'm was wondering if ii could get some advice with a trade of vehicles I have a 85 s10 blazer 4x4 that need some work on the ignition and valve covers and a few other things around where i live there is a guy upstate that has a 87 comance x 4x4 with a 2.8engine and 5 spd trans the engine has a bad knock but the local junkyard has a good engine the replace the motor for a couple of hundred bucks, but is this a trade worth it i really want a comanche truck for fishing and trailriding?
54bobby Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 just do it. i just got my first one and I'm in love already. its a 2.5 though. and if its an 87, from what i've read, thats good cause AMC not chrysler.
GEN1dawg91 Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 it throwed me a loop since i thought the 87 model was when the 4.0l was introduced? anyways the good news is my blazer has a 2.8l in it also lol thanks for the reply 54bobby
87manche1 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 When did they stop using the 2.8 cause mines an 87 and i have the 4.0. Op yea id do it love mine
GEN1dawg91 Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 thansk for the response 87manche1 il double check with the owner about the year model but I'm leaning to get it anyways and as a side note for those who want to know fish in a empty bucket in a suv= it smelling like fish for a week or 2 learned this the first week i had it hope it gives yall a laugh :)
87manche1 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Comanche.
GEN1dawg91 Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 update the truck's vin is 13TWL6576GTO15474 its a 86 2.8L model X 4x4 5 spd long bed
comanche1989 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 update the truck's vin is 13TWL6576GTO15474 its a 86 2.8L model X 4x4 5 spd long bed I'd simply get it because its a longbed 4x4 with the 5 speed. If the engine is bad I'd say you should just swap in a 4.0. The 2.8s weren't known for their longevity.
GEN1dawg91 Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 is a 4.0l swap be done on a low budget was thinking of a small diesel in the future when i get the money for it since the diesel swaps run a couple of grand
comanche1989 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 is a 4.0l swap be done on a low budget was thinking of a small diesel in the future when i get the money for it since the diesel swaps run a couple of grand A 4.0 swap most likely can be done on a much smaller budget than a diesel swap simply because of ease of the swap and the large supply of 4.0's out there.
GEN1dawg91 Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 thanks for the info think it might be possible to get moeny on top of the swap since my blazer is running and his is running but has a bad knock? about how much does a 4.0l and a possible transmission/transfercase upgrade cost? and a gm 3.4l cost?
comanche1989 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 thanks for the info think it might be possible to get moeny on top of the swap since my blazer is running and his is running but has a bad knock? about how much does a 4.0l and a possible transmission/transfercase upgrade cost? and a gm 3.4l cost? I'm not sure about the gm but a 4.0 with an Ax-15 5speed and a transfer case with the engine wiring harness would probably be around a grand used.
mnkyboy Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 3.4l would be about the same price as another 2.8l, they are basically the same engine except the 3.4l is newer and bigger. You just bolt your 2.8l parts to it and it bolts right in. 4.0l swap is much more complicated and depending on what you pay for a donor vehicle to do it a lot more money.
GEN1dawg91 Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 i think there are some 3.4l engines that run at a local junkyard but not sure what vehicles did they come in? so Ill know what to look for when I go next time the junkyard manager already thinks I'm crazy since ill just go and walk around the yard and take pics of old rusted vehicles lol
comanche1989 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I researched a little more, and mnkyboy is correct, it would be far cheaper to swap in another gm engine. I guess I'm just biased towards the 4.0s  . The Lq1 3.4 pushed out 210 hp at 5200 rpm and 215 lb·ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
GEN1dawg91 Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 thanks mnkyboy ill keep a eye out for one when i go to the jyard and ill check the other jeeps there over again for good measure.
cruiser54 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 http://www.cherokeeforum.com/vindecoder.php That's^^ the VIN decoder link.
comanche1989 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 You guys ever see this? And BTW OP, your VIN has to start 1J, not 13. http://www.cherokeef.../vindecoder.php Link doesn't work for me cruiser :dunno:
87MJTIM Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I am no mechanic, but there has been a lot of info about putting a 4.0 into an '86. Something about cutting the fire wall. If $$ is an issue, then the 4.0 may not be your best options. My $0.02.
shelbyluvv Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 It is more the radiator support than the firewall. The 86 firewall will handle a 5.2 with minor clearance issues. The radiator support is a whole different story.
mvusse Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 The firewall was changed a but to fit a 4.0 in 87. Some late 86 models have the newer firewall, most do not. Supposedly the needed extra clearance is not much, though, and basically just takes a few good blows with a hammer, no saw required. 87 and newer don't need anything done to the firewall. The radiator support is a different story.
GEN1dawg91 Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 http://www.cherokeef.../vindecoder.php That's^^ the VIN decoder link. the vin came back invaild when i tried it
