big66440
Does anyone have manual steering on a 4.0 Manche? (Automatic tranny)If so is it difficult to live with on a daily driver?
mnkyboy
I had it on my 2.5L,driving on the road wasnt bad even with 33s but low speed turning and offroad sucked. IMO powersteering was on of the best things I did to my MJ. Are you wanting to remove it?

IMO powersteering was on of the best things I did to my MJ. Are you wanting to remove it? I had the same thing, on a 2.5. Best upgrade I ever did adding PS. I don't know that Ive ever seen or heard of a 4.0 with manual steering... the 4.0 is really a bit too heavy for manual steering for an 80's model vehicle. I will be suprised if someone comes on here and says that is was available like that.
velco
According to the 87 specs the 4.0 required power steering even though it was considered an option.
Eagle
The ratio for the manual steering is ridiculous -- something like 24:1 or 28:1 ... compared to 14:1 for the power steering. I haven't had manual steering in an XJ or MJ but I remember the factory manual steering from my Javelin days. The ratio on that was 20:1 and it was horrible. Not too heavy (I changed all mine to the 16:1 quick ratio manual boxes for autocrossing), but much too slow. With the XJ/MJ manual boxes being even slower -- I can't even imagine how horrible it would be to drive one. Don't even want to think about it. Guest
I have the old manual steering box set-up. Just replaced the 25 year old box w/ a 94 YJ one last early last year. I wish I had PS sometimes, but for whatever reason, I like the manual setup; plus, it's a nice workout for the arms  Don't know what the ratio of the old "AMC" box was, but the YJ one seems to function easier at slower speeds. I know it's a lot easier to do turns with the new box as compared to the original. Just my 2 cents though. Like previously stated, I don't believe any 4.0 MJ / XJ came with Manual Steering unless specifically ordered. I know I personally haven't seen a 4.0 anything without PS. :dunno:
mvusse
Only vehicle I had with manual steering was my 79 F100. Parking lots sucked. After I dislocated a finger in a hairpin turn I added PS. Best mod I ever did.
Minuit
Yeah if you had the 4.0 you had to have power steering. I'd rather not have the extra workout - driving home after arms day with my P/S is enough of an 'extra workout'.
jpnjim
Lol The 60 year old, 7000lb PLOW truck on 35's has manual steering. Doing 25 point turns in the driveway brings big fun. It is tough to complain about the steering though, considering; A)My driveway is very steep and B)The truck only has a parking brake (no foot brakes) Roaring down the driveway of death without brakes makes you forget how bad manual steering is ;)

gogmorgo
Manual steering is the reason they used to use hula hoops for steering wheels. I remember seeing something about a lady who had her 60's Chevy truck done up real pretty. She wasn't a fan though of the huge wheel that was in it, so she swapped it out for something sparkly and modern. And then had PS put in because she simply couldn't drive it any more. jpnjim
Lol Yep, The M37's steering wheel looks like it came right off The Love Boat :) though, like Eagle, I drove manual steering Javelins years ago, and they had normal sized wheels (but I was stronger back then)
'87 fuel-miser
when i first got my '87 (2.5 , 4 sp) 'bout 5 yrs ago ... my manual steering box was so worn , it was the first thing i upgraded with  . :MJ 1: . p/s !
mvusse
Afriend had a 2.5 YJ with manual steering. When his went bad it was cheaper to upgrade to PS than it was to replace the manual steering box.
