Texting and driving

I admit, I get distracted while driving (ipod, radio, gps mostly) as much as the next fella but I'm becoming increasingly more cautious. But I see people texting like mad behind the wheel quite often.

Terrible result, this driver got 11 texts in 11 minutes prior to the crash. http://news.yahoo.com/driver-texting-mi ... 41737.html

i know at the Air Force base talking on the phone while driving will get you a ticket if the SFs or MPs catch you. I hate it when people drive and text... I have been almost hit several time while driving or walking to the store in the parking lot! yes i have text while in the car but at a red light or stop sign. If I have a passenger i get them to read the text and reply for me.

The biggest issue would be enforcing the law, and people trying to hide the fact they are texting and driving.

i used to do it but after they passed the law i stopped. even before that i could see that it was becoming a dangerous thing to be doing. i really do think its the most dangerous thing - right up there with really drunk driving. - talking on the phone, on the other hand, doesnt seem nearly as dangerous. - no more-so than smoking or changing the radio station.

....... or gps, drinking a pop, looking out the window, or a miriad of other things that we are allowed to do.

i still talk and text some times when i drive , the texting is usually quick responses and at lights or stop signs and the talking is always on speaker phone and with it siting on the center counsel and is "usually" setup prior to driving away . my favorite is seeing all the women drive with with the phone on speaker but in there hand and 6 inches from there mouth .

Texting and driving is illegal in Oregon, as is talking on a non hands free phone.

A texting related crash fatality happened locally this summer. http://www.ktvz.com/news/28746776/detail.html

So much for Oregons law. I see more texting & gabbing on cells now than before the law. Even the off duty cops do it. I wish they would get them out of resturants and doctors offices. Why doess everyone have to talk on these things so damn loud tha its annoying! I think I'll start carrying a portable radio or annoying toy and start drowning them out.

Totally agree. I hate when people start yakking. If I have to make, or receive a phone call, I excuse myself outside, or to a quiet part of the room away from anyone else.

People are so rude these days.

Cell phones are a contributing factor.

The person you are with and talking to is more important 99% of the time than whoever is calling you.

Don't interrupt a conversation to answer the damn phone. It's just rude. :wall: That's what voicemail is for.

Unless you're expecting something important of course.

And texting, are you kidding me? That's the dumbest thing that has caught on since the pet rock.

I'm old school. I prefer to talk to someone. Not send them a dumb message. Not to mention that the subtle aspects of communication are lost in texts. Such as facial expression and body language and tone.

Talking on a phone while driving is not the smartest thing to do, but is not any worse than fiddling with the radio or cd player.

Hands free is the best. But texting while driving... you might as well be driving under the influence. Just plain Stupid.

I don't care how you spin it.

:thwak:

SWHEW, I'm glad I got that off my chest.

I think I have seen articles or studies, that cell phone use is as bad or worse than drunk driving. I think texting would be a lot worse. I don't know if the insurance companies could negate their coverage if an accident was caused while texting or cell phone use. Germany does or at least use to put the blame of an accident on a person if they were not using a seat belt.

I liked my Nextel 2 way. You get to say what you want to and it's loud like hands free. Texting is just stupid unless you want to send someone a photo but i guess that's not really texting. New drivers have a hard enough time driving with no distractions. My advice is to not give a cell phone with texting until they are 18 years old, it can be moderated by the parents too.

Disagree entirely. There are many, many situations where all I need a yes/no answer from someone. Best part, I now have a written record of the response so if I forget a few hours in the future, I can just look it up. If I know the response is going to require a longer, lengthier answer, I will call.

I text a lot only because of my work and having a fiance 300 miles away in school, it's an easy way to check in with us both working. I will admit I used to text while driving, now I only do it at lights, I have a hands free kit for my car because when I travel down to see her 4 out of 5 states I travel through require it, but now that I have it, it is very convenient to use.

We'll have to agree to disagree then.

Just don't do it while driving...

I will occasionally read a text message while driving, never respond. I feel as though a quick glance at my cell phone is no more dangerous than looking at a GPS while driving. In fact, I would go as far as to say reading a text message is less dangerous than staring at a GPS screen trying to decipher which road I have to turn onto next.

Regardless, with the amount of handheld technology in today's vehicles there are a lot more distractions introduced to the driver. Some people are capable of multi-tasking whereas others give their complete, undivided attention to one thing. Those are the types of drivers you need to be wary of.

Ever stared at a road sign for a while trying to figure out if it's the right street that you need to turn down? Boom. You just took your eyes off the road and are just as hazardous as someone who looked down to glance at their phone. Ever eat in the car? Glance into your rear view mirror to make sure your son/daughter was buckled in tight? You can play the, "I don't ever even think about looking at my phone while driving, hence I'm a safer driver" game, but I can cite dozens of examples that make you just as much as a hazard as the cell phone glancers.

So, hope you don't hurt anyone out there, too. Be safe.

I posted this because even after 3 years of combat, and fancying myself in my own mind as a reborn Marlon Brando with a gun and the single source one man answer to our nation's security problems, I am still at heart one big natural softy, and it breaks me down to see young people (or anyone) die in an unnecessary event because of something dumb like playing with a phone while driving. All I'm saying is I'm trying to be as careful and cautious and safe as I can.
