HOrnbrod
With all the tornadoes here lately, I hired some local bubbas to take out a bunch of trees that are too close to the house and could cause damage. I'm out there with them making sure they don't destroy my house, and caught poison something real bad, and it's spreading and itching and driving me nuts. Can't get to the Doc until Monday to get a shot. Am using the useless Calamine and other topical applications, and taking benedryl antihistamines. What are some good home remedies y'all use that actually work?
jimoshel
Vinegar. Jack Daniels. Rub the vinegar on the affected area. Take the JD internally until you no longer feel anything. :D
Pete M
were there any fuzzy-looking vines climbing the trees? bunch of those around my parents' place. the anti-poison ivy creams are supposed to work best. and jim beat me to the punchline. Jack works wonders if taken internally.

HOrnbrod
Yes, there are those fuzzy vines on most of the trees Pete. Kind of looks like a morning glory vine. I'm not sure which plant/vine caused this rash though. Have not tried vinegar Jim, will give that a shot. A long cold shower helped too, albeit temporarily. Not crazy about Jack Black, but am working on it internally with the High Life. The itching seems to get better each can. My hands are really swollen up too. The Benedryl and brew is making me not care though.
86FUBAR
That sucks about the poison oak , I'm lucky that I'm immuned to it so I can't help much but my brother is deathly allergic to it and he always just used calamine lotion . Onetime when I was 10 and my bro was 13 he pised me off realy bad (he picked on me alot back then) when we were at the park by the house so I walked home and went out in the back yard which is all forest and grabbed some poison oak root and all and went in to his room and rubbed it all over his underware , folded it all and put it back like I found it and tossed the evidence over the fence and waited . Later the next day my plan started to unfold and it was bad , every nook and cranny was engulfed in puss filled scabs etc.. When my mom asked me if I knew what happened, I stood up in front of my mom and bro and told them what i did and why I did it . My bro never messed with me again . SW86
hahaha! ive got some right now too. sucks balls big time. its only a little spot or two on my arm but I'm used to it. working in the woods i come in contact with it almost everyday. usually i don't get it but every now and then. the vinegar does burn it so nicely but i never really thought it did much besides that. the bleach i hear works and know several people who do it. i however, don't. something about it doesnt sit right with me. i just used Ivarest lotion this go round and rub straight alcohol (cotton balls) on it the first few days when putting on new lotion. id say your in it for about a week. itll look nice and nasty bubbly about half way through. thats a good thing though. you know its almost gone then :D theres a decent cream out there too. one that blends in to the skin unlike Ivarest or other calamine based ones. deziped
Tub of water with bleach added helps cut the spreads of the stuff. Don't wash it though, that only spreads it.
Pete M
the liquid inside the vines is also toxic. do NOT be near them if you burn them. :ack:
whowey
There are 29 varieties of poison ivy. Only about a third have the classic 'leaves of three'. A oatmeal poultice will draw the crud out of you and reduce swelling. But it will make a holy mess when it dries. Just mix up old fashioned oatmeal and spread it on the affected areas. It will dry and pull the crud out, also it soothes the itchy dry skin.
HOrnbrod
I've had this crap forever. When I was a kid I had to be hospitalized once after breathing smoke from a log fire that had the ivy vines on them. Got it inside my lungs the doc said. Talk about an itch you can't scratch. Envy you guys that are immune. Been in jungles, forests, swamps, etc. in a lot of places around the world, no problems. Poison ivy and it's varieties is strictly a North America thing I guess. Douched some vinegar on the affected places (well, most all the affected places), did help. No oatmeal around here unfortunately. :( What a PITA. Literally........... Thanks guys. kyleag89
I also get it very very bad. I got some from the vines like pete posted a couple months ago and they are by far the worst Ive ever encountered! Only thing that worked for me was the antibiotics the hospital gave me, the calamine lotion takes the itch away for about 1 an a half seconds. I took cold showers and washed my towel after one use, wore bed pants and a long sleeve shirt to cover it while I slept to keep it from spreading on my sheets. These are all the steps I took to get rid of it as fast as possible. BTW I heard that using bleach is a VERY bad thing to do!
Thunderbear
I've used the Tecnu stuff with decent results. Any oil busting detergent will break up the urushiol on your skin. Treating your clothes and sheets and anything you came in contact with is the hard part. The roots are the most surefire way I've found to ID Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans), they are called adventitious roots, and they support the vine by attaching to whatever is handy. This allows the plant to grow in any number of ways, however. I have seen a poison ivy bush, a vine, a grass, a "tree" when it enveloped another sapling, and it will try to get you every time. Usually, Jewelweed (Impatiens spp.) will grow in mostly the same areas, and it has been used as a natural treatment for exposure. Poisonous plants are the first thing you pay attention to as a forester. ;)

Comanche County
Had it numerous times. It'll easily spread to places you don't want it to go. So don't scratch certain areas, trust me on this one! Only remedy that ever worked for me was going to the doctor and getting a shot of Coritzone, may have been Benadryl. The emergency room of any hospital will give it to you. But you shouldn't need it unless it gets to wear the sun don't shine or the itching becomes unbearable. Best home remedy is simply hot water, as hot as you can stand it. SW86
the itching doesnt really bother me. sometimes sure but if you just stay busy you won't think about it. luckily for me it just breaks out in small patches in one area. usually doesnt spread but most of the time i see it and jump on it immediately. the only time i really worry about it spreading is sleeping. even with medicine on i stick to a few sleeping positions the first few nights. after i know its past its peak. i go back to daily life. glundblad
Give up and go to the after hours clinic. No home remedies or over the counter helps. You will think it is getting better. Then the evening rolls around and you are ready to cut off body parts.
