randimal Posted November 28, 2006 Share Posted November 28, 2006 My comanche has a special feature that must be for taller people. When you sit on the bench seat, you sink down about 4 inches. Its actually fairly comfortable, but not optimal for driving. I was wondering if anyone has tried fixing a a sagging bench seat before. I'm thinking about running some more wire through the springs or even sliding a piece of canvas or something underneath. I've heard of people packing pool noodles under the seat, etc. Just wondering if anyone has tried to fix this problem before. mike Posted November 28, 2006 Share Posted November 28, 2006 i have a bench seat in my parts truck but shipping it to wa from in would kill you. if i was you i'd take the seat out and flip it over and see whats broke. sounds like some springs are either broke or stretched. you could probably fix it with some more wire ran back and forth. My wife and little girl met me on the road the other day and swore it wasn't me, because it was a short guy(I'm 6'3"). :yes: I've thought of taking mine out and checking the springs. I'm sure an uhpolstry shop can put heavier springs in it, but maybe too expensive. Bucket conversion might be a better alternative, but I want to keep the bench in the 2wd, to seat 3 in a pinch. Druville Posted November 28, 2006 Share Posted November 28, 2006 my bench sags a bit but not that bad. ive never really had a problem being 6'4. my head is about an inch from the roof. so i don't think its sagging 4 inches. we fixed the bench in our 68 chevy pickup with some foam so it looks really tall until you sit in it, then its normal height. its quick and easy....the redneck way. hah Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Local upholstery shop gave me a great price on replacing the foam, was even cheaper since I'd pull the seat myself and take it in to save on labor. jeepthing07 Posted November 29, 2006 Share Posted November 29, 2006 I took the coverings off my bench and the metal rods in the back that run through the foam were broken in sevral places and pokeing through the foam. So i pulled back the foam in all the places that the rods were broken and shoved pieces of pop can behind and on the sides of the rods and coverd the foam with damp towls and welded the rods back togeather and it was nice and firm again. I welded it close to the garage door so if it caught fire i could throw it outside and dump a bucket of water on it but i never needed it. Welding that close to the foam was an extreme firehazzard so i wouldent recomend it unless you don't mind burning up your seat or maybe even your garage. brokexj Posted November 30, 2006 Share Posted November 30, 2006 I took the cover off of mine (89) and cut the springs shorter (They pull right out of the frame) and then used a section of 3" foam and put it under the originial foam. Tim Tim, that's highway robbery. I've got a place in Columbia IL that can take care of you a lot cheaper ('specially if you carry the seat in). I checked out the MJ's at Speedway last month, didn't see any buckets unless they got something new in, highly possible. creekscout Posted December 1, 2006 Share Posted December 1, 2006 I have the same problem with the seat in the mj I just bought and one of the ideas I am going to try is to take the back bolts out of the seat fastening brackets and install washers or short shim blocks between the floor and brackets to try and raise the entire back of the seat and see if it feels better. I could live with the price if they were going to make it look like JohnQ's seat. They were talking about using some of the old material panels, another $75 for sun visors, and $200 more for the head liner. :nuts: I have one more place I'm going to get a price from. He quoted me a little over $100, about 2 hours labor, to remove the seat and rebuild the foam on the drivers side. He said it would be a LOT less if I removed and brought in the seat, saves a lot in labor. They're a good shop, do a lot of hot rods and boats. I used to take my boat covers to them for repair.
