New 2.5 MJ project...Now a 4.0 H.O. project

Recommended Posts

Well I could all the numbers, but I did a tooth count and I have a 3.55.

Is that a good ratio for a 2.5 with 31" tires ro should I look for a 4.10?

Local yard has a 3.55 front axle out of an XJ for $80 and a rear 3.55 axle out of a 95 Explorer for $100.

I had 31s and 3.55s and it wasnt much worse than my 35s and 4.10s so you should be ok but if you go with a ax-5 you will not see overdrive to much but PLAN for LATER cause you know once you start you can't stop. Its kinda like crack. jamminz.gif

I'd give it a shot, just as it's cheap. At least, in comparison to running another gear ratio.

That said, I've found the 2.5L to be gutless beyond belief in all of my experience with it. Long as you don't care about 1/4 mile times or plan to do any hardcore offroading it should be liveable though.

2.5L + 4 speed stick = 3.55 gears and the trans is an AX-4 or the rarer T-4

2.5L + 5 speed stick = 4.10 gears and the trans is an AX-5 or the rarer T-5

2.5L + 4speed auto = 4.56 gears and the trans is an AW-4

2.5L + 3speed auto = ??? gears and the trans is a 999 or 904 or something like that. It only happened in 86 MJ and 84-86 XJs.

There is no such thing as 3.73 gears in an MJ unless someone can prove me wrong.

If you want 31s, then I would seek out 4.10 geared axles.

This thing came with a bed full of trash and a funk smell inside that has not went away yet ;) But it did not cost me anything  Yet

Well just can not force myself to go back down on the MJ so the kid will have to learn to wheel on my Ranger and the MJ will be ready to go down the road.

Here are some photos after we put the front end parts I got off 89MJay Sure looks like the caster is way off

Looking good.

Throw a socket on top of one of the balljoints (make sure it fits on there nice and flush) and place a magnetic angle finder (can get them cheap at any hardware store) on top of the socket to check the caster. Should be around 7 degrees or so. Although a range of 5 to 9 is reasonable in most cases.

I'm not an expert on this but I remember my XJ having adjusters on the lower control arm frame brackets that would allow you to change the caster. Maybe you could get a couple degrees that way? I don't know if MJ's have them. I cut them off mine and didn't really pay attention.
