I need a fuel sending unit

Recommended Posts

if ya were closer id send ya one from a 2.5 if id work.

not sure if the 2.5 is the same. thanks though

are the ebay fuel sending units the correct ones ie. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/E7091S-F ... ccessories? they say they are for a Comanche, Cherokee, others also include wagoner and grand Cherokee. I'm thinking they are not interchangeable throughout those vehicles but who knows.

From what I've seen, your only options are here,a JY, or online used parts dealer. The sender is the hard part to find. What size tank do you have? If it's the 23 gal tank then your search just got a little harder. The sending unit in them are different. The float arm is shorter than the smaller tanks. Looks like this.

Kind of hard to tell but the floats distance from the 90 degree bend is only a couple of inches. The others are more like 6 to 8 inches.

I think that looks like mine but if in not mistaken then the float is different on mine. not sure if it narrows it down but it is a long wheel base and it has 3 straps holding it up. my main issues are the fuel pump is dead, and where the lines enter the tank on the sending unit is cracked. the line can free spin in the sending unit. I have seen on here that some have repaired them with JB weld, I have also heard of soldering them back together. I guess I may have to try that. maybe I will check to see if the local junk yard kept the fuel sending unit out of the one they have. hopefully it is a long bed. I may contact one of the fuel sending repair sites to get a quote also.

Ok, here's what I think I know about this so if I'm wrong, please someone else chime in. If you have three straps then it is a 23 gal tank which I believe was only available with the LWB. The MJ's sending unit holder is 180 degrees out from the XJ's and will not work with the stock tanks because of the pan inside of them. Some aftermarket tanks do not have that pan and they will work. The 23 gal tank is obviously longer than the other smaller tanks but I believe it is not as tall. That is why the sender arm is shorter to allow it to make contact with the full stop on the sender. If you put a smaller tank one in it, it will never read full but should read empty correctly. The fuel pumps are the same for MJ's and XJ's and are enterchangeable. So with all that said, you can get a pump from your local autoparts store with no problem. The sending unit holder, minus the pump and sender, is the same for all the tanks on the MJ's. You can get a used one, put a new pump on it, and I believe you can switch the arm on the sender with the arm from your tank( if it is the right one ). I've seen a link describing the process for changing the arms but can find it at the moment. Again, if any of this is out to lunch, someone correct me.

Edit: I found where I saw the mention of the sender arms being changed. It was on page 11 of shelbyluvv's Project "Onyx". Maybe he'll chime in as how he did it.

I have a 23 gallon tank, and the sender in it had a long arm. It reads correctly. I also got another long arm sender from a JY, also a 23 gallon tank, also long arm. I got a "like new" tank off Ebay, also 23 gallon, with a short arm sending unit in it. That one reads full when the tank is anywhere over 2/3.

Both a 4.0 pump and a 2.5 pump fit on the same unit. The only one that is different is the unit for the 2.8V6. It had a mechanical pump on the engine block, not electrical in the tank.

I don't have one to sell you, though, as two of the three need fixed. Haven't got around to it yet.

End my 23 gallon tank, even with a big dent in the bottom from a rock or log (can't remember any more) holds ~26 gallons

I sent my pump module off to get rebuilt... I haven't installed it yet but it looks like it'll work great.

$130 or so, and its been cleaned, re-tubed and sealed, painted (with the correct stuff inside and out), had the wiring and level sending unit checked/repaired, and has a lifetime leak guarantee.

well for now we plastered the sending unit with JB weld, hopefully it will hold up. I emailed 2 companies one being the above company for a quote. I believe I cannot get an accurate quote from either because on a repair basis they have no idea how bad the unit is. so it is good to know that you got your fixed for about 130. how bad was yours when you sent it out?

so for now I'm out of the market for a fuel sending unit.

Thanks for all the info guys :wavey:

That's interesting. The only one I've seen from a 23 gal tank was the one I pulled from the JY and it was a short arm. Was your long arms at a 90 degree or over 90? What's the height of the 23 gal? Has anyone seen a short arm in anything other than the 23 gal tank?

  • 7 years later...

This is an 8yr old thread, I searched to see if there were any definitive answers on this and have not seen any, so I am reopening in in hopes someone has tried some swapping. I have an 18GL tank in an '88 long bed, would like to upgrade to a 23GL. The tanks are not very difficult to find, and reasonable (little over $100). But not the sending units. From experience I can tell you that if its at all possible, replace the entire hanger assembly whenever you replace a pump in an old tank. I have a '95 F150 that sat for 6 yrs. The insides of the front tank looked like molassas, replaced that tank. The fuel pumps were easy to find....around $100. BUT... I could not locate the sending unit. Ford no longer makes them....there were no listings anywhere. I managed to find the entire "loaded" hanger assembly, with new everything, for $160. Thats the way to go if its possible. I made the mistake of only replacing the pump in the rear tank. I checked the sending unit with a meter and it appeared to work fine, but when I installed it it only goes to 3/4 and goes to empty at a half tank.

Anyway.....if someone has figured out a sending unit solution I would love to hear it. I have the premium instruments with the trip odometer so I would not mind it the gauge does not show completely full. If no one has an answer, I have XJ and MJ tanks I can pull and do some playing around and see if thats an option. Some of the hanger assemblies on eBay list MJs and XJs, of course some sellers on that site list the XJ tail lights as fitting an MJ also......

The sending unit assemblies for XJ's aren't "deep" enough for an MJ tank, the XJ tank is low profile.

However, I think the sending unit can be made to work.  I wanna say the plastic rheostat part of it is the same for all fuel injected models, it's the angle and length of the float arm that determines the range from full to empty.

So, in theory, an XJ sending unit mounted to an MJ assembly and re-fitted with the MJ float arm "should" work.

However a buddy of mine swapped all the drivetrain and wiring from a '95 XJ into his '89 MJ and said that the XJ sending unit sent a different voltage range that wasn't compatible with the MJ fuel gauge......

Dunno.

I would also like to add:

There is a complaint thread here: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1139595regarding Bosch pumps not coming with hardware.

I recently replaced my pump. Every search, every vendor, turned up the same Bosch number for a '88 2.5.

No hardware....ie......rubber isolators, and the pump was of a different design to the original.

Fortunately, my isolators were in good shape and I was able to modify it without it falling apart.
