Cash for clunker blow ups...

There is a 2000 XJ in a Kansas City area yard with a seized up motor. The owner says he has 180 days to part it then it must be crushed. Perhaps that is their requirement not the governments? I called and asked if I could buy the entire Jeep just for "parts" for my MJ. Even told him what I am after for a donor. He said I could buy all the parts individually, but he could NOT sell me the entire vehicle as parts.

Its a darn shame.

Not selling the whole vehicle may also be the yards rules, many yards won't sell complete vehicles for whatever reasons, especially newer ones. Just saw on one of the spike shows where they are putting a dodge drivetrain under a 70's Ford body... they said that thee yard doesnt sell whole vehicles, but made an exception for them. Maybe a liability issue?

Here in Covington we have numerous dealerships, but the only ones that 'profited' from the CFC program were the Toyota and Nissan ones. In fact, the Toyota one actually has about 200 CFC vehicles still on the lot, of which there are 4 - 1977 to 2000 XJ, several WJ and YJ, and numerous 1988-1996 XJ. I went over there after work last week and asked them if they would sell a vehicle complete for parts (adding emphatically that I did not want the title) and they said no, that the vehicles were all being wholesaled to 'Alex's Auto repair' in Slidell for $50.00 each.

When I called Alexs's and tried to work a deal with him (I'll buy one from here so you don't have to tow it over there....) he said he would sell me all the individual parts I wanted, but said ' I paid a lot for these cars and need to get my money back....'

After some research on this character I discovered he was the same guy who towed all the flooded vehicles out of New Orleans after Katrina, rehabilitated them and sold them again to unsuspecting buyers. He runs an auto repair shop, but has about 20 acres of vehicles that he uses to get parts off of to 'repair' vehicles brought in his shop.

All-in-all, a sweet deal for him. And yes, I am jealous! :headpop:

I've heard that line before.

If he only paid $50 each for them, hes robbing that dealer blind, scrap price paid to regular people is at least double that if not triple. But I have to have respect for someone like that with their own business making a good profit.... at least someone is. Not that it is any good that he will want to screw the next guy, but business is business and you are there to make a profit. Now the Katrina cars is another story.... all of those should have went right to scrap, no ifs, ands, or buts. Reselling one of those cars is ripping someone off. That guy should be publically whipped for something like that.

I couldn't watch that video after the MJ was shown :(

Now I need to go over to the shop and hug my rust buckets just to get that image out of my head

I visited 2 U-pull yards this weekend, and seen a ton of C4C already in the yards, most were better cars than what were parked in the parking lot at the places :hmm:

Well........the picking for parts were better.......got my fill for parts, and going back for more at the end of the week........might as well get parts while there there :brows:

And NO MJ's in any of the yards I was at

Visited 3 or 4 yards over the Labor Day weekend. Each yard seemed to have LOTS of inventory - including CFC vehicles. Every thing but the engine was for sale. Those seemed to be painted green. Found a nice, straight 87 Comanche that was a CFC trade. I took the inside lights and left the good, rear fender flares. Scored a nice pair of buckets a couple of weeks earlier.

Anybody need a good set of tail lights? Let me know.

  • 2 weeks later...

I work at a junkyard here in CT and we haven't gotten a single comanche from the c4c program. (knock on wood) We've gotten over a hundred other vehicles but no comanches. Mostly cherokees, explorers, full size ford pick ups, windstars, and full size dodge pick ups. Most of the stuff we're getting in is nicer than the crap i see on the road. We can pull everything but engine blocks.

i've seen one comanche around here in the death rows. it looks like the twin to my truck :(

admittedly though, that truck was in rough shape. the tailgate was shot, the bed was shot, the rockers, cab corners, and floor were all missing, and there was a huge hole in the passenger door. it has 193,000 miles on it. tail lights and slider window looked good though, and it has the skip and pioneer packages. 4.0 auto 4wd LWB.

i've seen a couple land rovers, too, including a late model range rover. there's no way that wasn't worth more than 4500 bucks.
