So where would the XJ and Grand Cherokee be on the list if they were separated by year like the rest of those vehicles? There are 13 years worth of XJs and 10 years worth of Grand Cherokees eligible for the CARS program, yet the article lumped them together for this list. Lies, damn lies and statistics...

And i'm not defending the CARS program or endorsing crushing any Jeep. Just pointing out some lousy writing.

ford focus, now there's a fine automobile  ford's answer to the dodge neon, great vehicle for people to be buying :ack:

so i was talking to the tool guys today that come by the shop. and when they are disabling the engines, they are supposed to just run them at 2,000 rpm and the junk they put in actually solitifies after it cools down. i still hope someone gets hurt the way they're doing it in the videos we see.

also i head a story where they did that before the deal was done, and the salesman came running back to say stop, the financing didn't go through......too late, engine toasted. :shake:

I said that the other day... I worked with sodium silicate for a couple years... it is some nasty stuff once it cools...

I have a friend who is a salesman at a BIG Ford dealer in $#!&-cago. He said they have been out of qualifying cars since the third day of the program. He also said that 80% of the people coming in are being turned down. Due to credit stuff and the EPA changing the milage standards the day before it began.

But the truth is what we are seeing is people who didn't need an SUV in the first place buying the car they should have back then.

I work at a dealership and things have been crazy since the start of the CARS thing. So far all we got were mostly late 80s to mid 90s ford and chevy half ton trucks and most of them are no loss. Ill cry when the first jeep comes in. One truck was a nice 98 f150 with 70k on it. Drained the oil and poured water with block sealer down the crank case and it was done. What really bothers me is that toyota and honda etc vehicles qualify for the program.

My dealer has yet to ruin any engines, but the dealer owner is wasting no time in securing good parts that he can sell used through the body shop. I'm talking truck bed, fenders, hoods, grilles, wheels, tires... Part of me wishes that doing that is illegal and that he'll get popped, but I think that is mostly because I aint gettting any of the cool parts. :???:

^ford guy :brows: j/k

but it sounds to me like if you ad up the 13 yrs worth of xj's, and all the grand cherokee's, they don't equal how many 96, 97, 98, or 99 exploders are getting traded in by each year alone.

what a bullshyte waste of taxpayer dollars this whole program is... i watched a ton of youtube videos yesterday showing engines being detroyed and i think out of all of them i saw only 5 or 6 of the cars being traded looked crushworthy.. all this scrap iron theyve just created could have helped families that can't afford new cars.. and by reselling them you could recoup some of our money thats being doled out hand over fist to everyone but the people who need it.. gotta love the government, only they could come up with a plan like this... "say there, skeezix, i've got an idea: why don't we buy old cars for TWICE what theyre actually worth, and then destroy them!" "why thats brilliant!"

  • 3 weeks later...

So is it a possibility that if I walk up to the dealership where they have a rust free 92 XJ sitting on some nice wheels and tires and it has "CASH FOR CLUNKERS " spray painted on the side of it I might be able to deal with them to trade wheels and tires from my MJ for a price. :hmm:

The point of this video is not necessarily that this is exactly what is happening, but rather that this program could have been more well-thought out, instead of easily allowing loopholes like this and creating a shortage of used engines.

that guy is almost as full of :bs: as the clunkers program is. some dealers may try to do that, but the person who traded in on the car has to sign off on the program, so only dishonest dealers who don't mind committing fraud would do so.

Let's see:

1. We, the government, believe the car dealers are ripping you off by not giving you more money for your clunker, so we will rip Americans off and give you what we think you really deserve.

2. We, the government, believe any car engine that gets worse than 23 mpg should not be on the road polluting our atmosphere, so we are going to cash in on your greed to get a green environment by destroying all those engines.

3. We, the government, will not stop here, but will take from you and give back to you according to our being smarter than any of you out there.

4. We, the government, are in a back door way establishing socialism, maybe communism, and the proof that we will get away with it is so many have used cash for clunkers honestly believing we, the government, somehow come up with the money out of a hat when instead we are bankrupting maybe this, but definitely future generations.

5. We, the government, don't like "we, the people."
