Hard to beat soft aluminum sheets and self tapping screws for ease of covering a hole. :D Not the best for durability though. :(

I'm going to be working on my bed rust soon. I bought a 89 2 door parts cherokee for $150. i cut the upper rear wheel well sheetmetal out before i scraped it. i plan on welding it in, it seems like its going to fit well. I made a 2x5 tube bumper for it this weekend. maybe next weekend i will get the bed patched up and take some pix of it

mine had sever damage on the driver's side due to a pinhole size hole in the upper tank causing the fumes to accumulate in the fender well

CW, you simply cut the bad metal out and remounted the flare higher on the fender? I need to do that to mine.

yeah that is a great idea. cw's project got me started on mine(see before pics) but the gas fumes had done way to much damage and left me with little choice :cry:

Basically YES...

 

After I chopped, I coated everything with a fresh coat of paint, inside and out. While I had it appart and could now reach the inners of my bed. I scrapped that too.....MIGHTY rusty in there!!! I sprayed that with a couple cans of commertial rust converter. Then coated everything with a couple more cans of ruberized undercoating.

 

I stilll have a couple pea sized holes to finish repairing. Then its a paint job for the ol girl!!

 

When I saw how dadly rusted it was inside/under the rear wheel wells. I got worried, As to remove it all, looked like I would seriously effect the integrety of the bed. But it didnt turn out as a major problem. I added some strap steel in five places on each wheel well. I attached it from the bolts that hold the flairs to the pinch seam inside the wheel well.

Ok this is the upper portion of 2 door cherokee rear wheel opening. it doesent fit perfect but its really close. I think i can get it to look factory if the welding doesent warp it to badly. I don't know if I'm going to flange it or butt weld it in but its going to get a coat of por15 when its done!

I wonder how much metal would need to be intack for the paper to stick to?

They rust from the inside out, so take care to clean the little shelf inside the fender and above the wheelwell. It can collect dirt and that can retain moisture.

No. It WILL collect dirt and that WILL retain moisture. Not to mention salts and other things that help rust.

That makes me wanna pull my rear flares and check. I thought about selling them anyways. 8)

A better method is to look up at the inside surface of the outer steel from behind and in front of the rear tires. The inside surface will start rusting and spread outward long before the rust penetrates the steel and is visible from the outside.

Thats cool, mine was only 14...and at least I used the search feature and bumped an old one and didnt start a new thread. Isnt that what people always tell people to do?
