how do you guys calculate the exact amount of gas your using? when i fill up i can drive for a while before the guage starts to move, and when its reading empty, i can usually drive for a while still so i don't know exactly what the fuel capacity is. it seems between 70 and 80 litres.

and i have 235/75s and thats not whats listed in my door, does that mean my speedo is off?

1. Write down odometer reading.

2. Fill tank until the pump stops itself.

3. Go driving for awhile, probably until your needle is at about half.

4. Go fill tank back up (most accurately at the exact same pump) until the pump stops itself.

Divide the mileage you traveled by the amount of gas you put in the second time.

I don't get very good milage , mine is a 4.0 HO , DD , 31" tires , high altitude driving and a lead foot .

31" only took my spedo off about 5mph , not too bad . It evens out because I drive my bikes as DD , two thirds of the year .

Here comes spring .

my 87 lifted MJ with brand new H.O., .030 bore, comp. cam, borla header, 2001 intake, 62mm TB, mustang injectors, K&N filter, aw4 auto, 4.10 gears, and 33's will net me between 17mpg and 22mpg depending on how I'm driving and if I'm on the interstate or not. with the 35's on it, I get a max of 16mpg usually around 14.7mpg.

my 86 (when it was running/driving) got me between 26mpg and 32mpg...but i put a '96 camaro 3800 v6 in it.

my 86 diesel gets between 28mpg and 36mpg, depending on how/where I'm driving it.

fuel mileage is overrated. or maybe I should put it as knowing your fuel mileage is overrated. :D knowing those numbers doesn't affect how I drive or what I drive. I guess if the numbers start dropping off it might show that there's a problem, but there are other indicators of a bad o2 sensor or fuel leak or clogged cat. :dunno:

Wellllll.... Mine says it gets about 20 mpg, butttttt... I always knew the speedometer was slow, so last night i pulled up next to a cadilac or something with a huge digital readiout. it read 57, mine read 47 :ack: I knew it was about that far off but it't not because of my tires or anything. The previous owner was a world renown cheap skate and I'm positive he messed with the speedometer til he got it to slow down and make his miles stay down so he could sell it. Still a good jeep, and I can honestly say it gets OVER 20 mpg :D so i have a ball park of my mpg and I don't care enough to be acurate.

BTW thats a 4.0 5speed. IDK the gears.

My 2wd 5 speed 4.0HO powered sport xj is really surprising me with a running average of 20.8mpg in mixed driving over the past 4 fillups.

Best of all this thing is a rocketship compared to the 16mpg 4.0ZJ it replaced or my lifted and locked yj

EDIT: If you have speedo accuracy questions and use an iphone there's an app that's a "GPS" speedometer. I use it and have tested it and it's dead on accurate

1987 SWB, 2.5, 4sp manual, 2wd, studded 235/75-15s, canopy, hilly terrain, daily driver. 33 highway miles/day round trip to work, 5 days/week.

Last tank I received 18.2 mpg. Previous tank was 18.8, and the one before that 18.3.

Pretty consistent at 18 mpg.
