3" lift with d35?

will a d35 with 4.10s hold up if i lift it only 3" and put 31s on it. all it will be used for is a dd and weekend mud running every now and then. I'm just wondering because i don't have much time with bailing hay right now to make an xj d44 work and i can't find a cheap mj d44 or other axle that would bolt up and be stronger then the d35.

i just snapped a d35 with 4.10's and 33's this weekend :cry:

worst part was that it wasn't my jeep, it was my gf's. now I have to pay to fix it. my friend (also named alex) has been wheeling his xj with 4.10's and 31's for about 1 year now problem free, its lifted 8 inches

i have been told stories like this before. they seem to go both ways. but most of the ppl that have snapped them seem to be running bigger then 31s. so i don't know what i should do. i don't really have the money righ tnow for a 44 but i don't need to snap a 35 down the road and just be out money.

see i have only heard of ppl snapping with 33's while offroading, and beating it hard (i downshifted and burried the YJ to the frame rails while running in a bis azz sand box)

 

haven't heard of n e one snapping with 31's on or off road. I think it owuld be safe for onroad definately, offroad not really sure. I would think as long as you went easy you'd be okay

Because there are literally hundreds of thousands of D35s in the world and the vast majority of them work just fine.

 

P.S. Should I also mention that it was a 2wd truck? :brows:

On the XJ I ran 32s on the stock axles and snapped some teeth off the spider gears... but the axle had like 189K on it or something. I put an ezlocker in and never had a problem again.

I ran mine for a couple of years with 31s and 3.73 gears. That gear and tire combination isn't a problem as long as you use the throttle gently and drive with finesse rather than brute force.

you'll be fine....i ran 33" boggers on my old yj with the D35 and never broke anything. and i'm kinda hard on riggin'. besides, there are a kajillion D35 shafts sitting out there in ppl's garages just waiting to be swapped in on the trail!

 

do it, grab a couple of spare shafts....go wheel the wee out of it, when it breaks, fix it, wheel some more!

You will be fine. I have been running 33" Hawgs on an amc 20 being turned by a 304v8 in my cj for ever..No problems..just don't do rocks. :cheers:

 

AMC 20's are strong axles my friend. not nearly like a D35

(at least the grand wagoneer ones are, i seem to remember hearing about a difference between them and the CJ 20s)

I run 35s on my stock axles and i know I'm going to break sometime so i don't need antone to tell me that but i have wheel this way for 3 years and even been all over Tellico and no problems YET. :eek: I put lockrights in about 3 months ago and havent been on real hardcore stuff but I'm sure when i do it will break but there are so many out there.I have 3 complete (front and rear) sets to replace mine with so not to much worry about parts just labor. IMO find some spares and run it. Oh yeah I only have a 4 banger with 4.10s so not to much power there but the axles are really week compared to others.just my penny or two worth.

Speaking from experience.. I seen Henry a guy in our club destroy his in the walmart parking lot, while showing off how he could lift the front tire off the ground.

 

I can tell you how I bent a d35 housing at tellico in april of 05, on lower guardrail :brows:

 

Some ppl have good luck with the d35, while others just seem to destroy them. Personally I wouldnt put anymoney into one, but like everyone has said.. there are plenty of spares out there. Keep in mind.. that unless you are running stock rear parts, it isnt as easy as ppl make it out to be to change an axleshaft on the trail

have a nagging woman around.

I had the problem when my LCA needed fixed. it sucks.

 

At one time or another we have all had nagging woman, or some one elses child.... around while broken on the trail.

 

 

The whole key to any successful fix on the trail, is to be self sufficient, and carry spares :D or at least be able to wrench on your crap. I have seen way to many times.. ppl break, and the driver having no clue/tools/or parts to fix their rig. Then they try and get in your way cause they don't like the way your are wrenching on their rig :eek: Thats when I pack up my tools, and spare parts and walk away :brows: This is when they come back and appologize, and I tellthem I am drinking :cheers: my tool bag is there, just make sure you clean the tools and they all make it back in the bag :D

For me, being prepared is NOT optional.

 

 

 

 

You should have seen the look on the guys' faces when I offered up my floor jack, c02 tank, impact wrench, 4 way wrench, shovel, etc. when all they had was a highlift and factory lug nut wrench to change a blown tire. :D
