  1. I'm going to replace my heater core in a couple of weeks, and I'd like to re-seal the HVAC box when I have it apart. I know there are kits to do this on the 97+ systems, but does anyone know of a similar kit for the older ones? The foam seals on my HVAC system (especially the one the heater core and A/C expansion valve go through) are crumbling and contributing to some leakage.
  2. Ran by the pick and pull and got a timing cover out of a '95 (with 318,000 miles!) today. It has the timing marks and looks to be 100% exactly the same as my old one. What was the original finish on these? Were they painted or bare aluminum? The donor part is so dirty it's impossible to tell what it looked like 20 years ago.
  3. Dunno about anyone else, but I'd gladly pay $150 to keep fuel injection.
  4. $600 for something in that kind of shape is an absolute steal and it even has the metric ton rear suspension! After seeing the first couple of pics I was about to jump down and write about how you had a set of front mud flaps and that they're rare, etc, then I saw they were diamond plate... yuck. I don't guess the PO got the memo on the "stick 3x5 index cards under the fender flare" masking trick. If he screwed up something that easy I'd be worried that there might be other scary hackjobs hiding under there.
  5. The "joystick" remote mirrors are very common in junkyards. Make sure you loosen the tiny set screw underneath where the joystick comes out (Torx size 6) and don't try to just rip them off.
  6. Thanks a lot! It's comments like yours that keep me going. I've always tried to do the absolute best work on this truck that I can (it's up to you all to decide if I'm successful), and for the most part I'm not a fan of cutting corners. I'm a very detail oriented person - to the point where a minor detail being off makes me very uncomfortable, and I think my truck reflects that. After all, the big picture is just a combination of a bunch of little details, right?
  7. No new pics for now, but things are going to happen next week. I have Wednesday, Thursday and Friday off from school, and I plan on getting the MJ on the road in that time. Here's what I plan on doing: - Heater core - Complete timing chain replacement - Upper control arms & bushings (just wait until you see the condition of the ones in there now) - Fix the frakking driveline vibration, by means of a new driveshaft if necessary (time permitting) Basically, that means I need to get the truck running by Wednesday morning in order to get the A/C discharged and the driveshaft to the driveline shop on Wednesday. Lofty goals, but I can't put into words how tired I am of driving beater Thunderbirds and Buicks. Last weekend, I got the new Cloyes timing chain installed. This one isn't perfect, but it's a lot better than what was in there. I wish it was tighter, but I'm kind of out of options unless I want to piece together a new set from NOS Mopar parts ($$$$$$) as the whole thing is NLA from every dealer I've checked. Installing the camshaft sprocket is a PITA - it interfaces with a (thankfully hollow) roll pin on the camshaft. I suggest sticking something in the roll pin to make alignment easier, like so: Anything that fits in the hole in the roll pin will work. This allows you to slide the entire assembly on evenly. Make sure you line the timing set up (dots facing each other, crankshaft keyway at TDC) before you try to install it. The camshaft bolt gets 80 ft-lbs of torque. Make sure not to lose the spring and pin that fit inside the bolt. If you have good eyes, you might notice sparkly flakes sitting inside the blue oil pan gasket. At first, I thought this was bearing material and nearly had a heart attack, but further inspection showed that the bolt holes on the bottom of my timing cover are almost all completely stripped out, and the flakes in the oil pan gasket are aluminum shavings. Now that I've possibly introduced metal flakes into my engine, as a precaution I'll have to change out my $30 in full synthetic oil after less than 500 miles! I plan on getting a replacement timing cover and some other odds and ends at the junkyard this weekend. I'm already sick and the forecast on Saturday is low 50s and rain... The things I do to myself for you, truck. You damn well better appreciate this.
  8. Awesome video. The truck is really well done, and the owner seems like a pretty cool guy too.
  9. All good  Let me know if you find anything.
  10. Still looking for one. Not 100% necessary but it would make my life a little bit easier if I could match colors.
  11. Alright, thanks guys. I don't use a timing light much but I'd feel uneasy if something that's supposed to be there was missing. Silly me thinking that was one of those "1964-2006 interchange" parts.
  12. This is a trip back down memory lane for sure. My '91 belonged to my grandparents and sat for a similar amount of time to yours before I got it and got it running. Mine even had exactly the same green crap on it too. Looks like you're working with a pretty solid shell and it seems like you've got a pretty good idea of what you're doing. Looking forward to seeing this one come back to life
  13. So he can open the cowl induction hood all the way? Just guessing :dunno: I mean you don't really NEED that wiper anyway. Weight reduction.
  14. My 4.0's timing cover is all chowdered up and I'm not spending the money or time on a crappy aftermarket one. Does anyone know what years will interchange with a '91? Would I be alright with just grabbing one from the newest Jeep I can find at the junkyard? Can't find much about this online.
  15. Jumper cables, complete factory jack hardware (a 4-way would make a good addition), 1qt each of oil, ATF, and power steering fluid, as well as a fairly comprehensive tool set, including standard and metric sockets, wrenches (ratcheting and standard) and screwdrivers, and of course my Leatherman that I carry at all times. It all fits behind the seat. I want to be able to save my @$$ or someone else's on the side of the road, and go to the junkyard just with my truck tools if I feel like it. The MJ is nice enough these days that I don't worry about having to fix it on the side of the road, but I like to be prepared. If I have the T-Bird I usually don't take the tools. If that thing breaks on the side of the road I have no hope of fixing it. If the truck is parked I bring it all inside for security. I sometimes do work just with my truck tools so I can be sure that I can service the MJ with just the stuff I carry around.
  16. I've never heard a single good thing about ATK engines. Not just here but from other car/mechanic forums as well. Lots of stories of failures after less than 1000 miles, and not just in Jeep engines.
  17. I might need to look into this. My wipers chatter a LOT until the windshield is good and wet. My current blades are roughly 2 year old Tricos that look a lot like the ones you posted, although my (original) arms might just be worn out.
  18. If you find any threads that are missing key photos, please send a message to the post owner to let them know. If you don't hear back within a week, then let a mod (or Minuit) know so we can see what we can do. thanks! To find a specific item in the list, press the Control and F keys at the same time. 19. Must be something about red MJs...
  20. Here were mine. Truck is 100% rust free otherwise. Lots of pinholes in the passenger side. I'm going to need to replace some metal eventually.

  22. I must've missed the memo. Only touched a razor very occasionally since the middle of September. Mostly because my hair grows farther down on one side of my face than the other.
  23. Can you get a pic of what you did to the wind strips? If it made a big difference I'm very interested in doing what you did.
  24. This is my new favorite 97+ swap. The half and half '99/old school interior matches better than I thought it would and I like that you kept the old school exterior look. The lift and tires match perfectly, and it's all tasteful and understated. Brilliant truck.
