Remi, Spoke to Hwy 67 about this Cherokee when I was looking for wheels and tires 3 weeks ago. Lots of stuff gone of the Jeep. Just hoping to find someone on here who is stripping a 91 or 92. My truck is still in TJ at a shop. Work has me in Ft. Worth Texas for the next 3 week or more. So figure I have some time to see if one turns up here.

Got my Comanche 6 years ago to haul stuf to the dump and general utility tasks. Also used it to haul a camping trailer. A couple of years ago it was totaled while parked on the side of the road. I paid to have it fixed and painted back to new condition. Recently the truck was stolen, then recoverd in Tijuana, Baja California. Much of the electrical harness have been cut, minor body damage and unknowen other damage. As of now, the MJ is sitting at an Electric shop in TJ while I search for a fresh wiring harness. Labor in TJ is much less than in San Diego. Want to get your opinions on just towing the truck home and doing an engine conversion at the same time I fix the wiring harness. My thoughts for a power train conversion center around replacing the AW4 automatic transmission with a modern 6 speed automatic. Given the cooling issues even going to a 4.7 stroker, what are your thoughts for replacement engine and transmission. My first thought was a 4.8 liter aluminum Chevy V8 with a 6 speed automatic. Second choice or thought was to look for a 4.7 ltr Toyota and 6 speed automatic. There are other choices available, so please give me your input. I would like to hear your input. Thanks,

My 91 Comanche was stolen and recovered quickly. But I have cut wring harness all over the place. So, I am looking to buy replacement harnesses for the cab and for the engine compartment. Checking on the web, I see yards in Chicago, British Columbia and in Tijuana listing 91 Comanches in their yard, but Chicago and B.C. is a long way to go. The Tijuana Comanche is still impounded by the state, so not yet available. But it is the closest one to home. Anyone on here have a 91 or 92 they are parting out? Thanks, JJ

Isuzu Rodeo 44 with limited slip?
johnj92131 replied to ComancheDude11's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My memory is the button tells the transmission to start in a higher gear than first. This is so you do not start wheels spinning in snow/ice. I have a 2000 Rodeo, but it has been a while since I read my manual. No snow or ice in San Diego. I am working in Texas for the next few weeks, will check the book when I get home. -
No doubt it could be done, but WHY? The XJ seats 5 as is, to make the center front passanger comfortable, you would need to get rid of the center console, I would think. Posts here tell you how to use MJ bench seat mounting brackets for a change to bucket seats. So just do the reverse. Use bucket seat brakets from the XJ to mount the MJ bench seat. Would think you would want to move the XJ shifter to the column, if it is an automatic. For sake of the front center passanger.

How to get better fuel milage?
johnj92131 replied to Live For God's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
First, pump up your tire. Pressure. This will lower your rolling resistance. Second, 2 wheel drive only. Third, slow down. Be gentle with acceleration. Drive as smoothly as you can., I have hit 23 nog on the highway with my 4.0 automatic, but get 17 around town. -

What year is dad's MJ? 91 and 92 are different from 86 toyour friend. 90. Do not think column shift cluster is just a straight pullout. I have seen a couple threads about this. -
LWB Wildernest in Boulder $600

And how would you get it home if you did manage to snag this gem? Besides, I would have got it first, except for the fact my truck was stolen in Tijuana! It is in the shop, waiting for a complete wiring harness replacement and a few other things. JJ -
'91 comanche 4x4 diesel
johnj92131 replied to shawn's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Understand the frustration dealing with Craigslist people. I got a free SnugTop shell last year. The fellow have been stood up by all kinds of callers, even for FREE. If you really mean what you said about it going to the crusher, let me know. I will buy it for the scrapper price, just to keep it from being scrapped. I would fly my son up and have him drive it to San Diego. However, I would expect big issues trying to register it in California, given an 81 engine in a 91 gas truck. May be, I could get it registered in Baja? Tons of Baja cars in San Diego every day. -
91 MJ replacement wiring harnesses
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Good news (I think)!! Found a 91 Comanche in a Tijuana Junk yard - Got all the wiring harnesses we "think" we need. Shop may have the truck back running this week. -
is my truck metric ton worthy?
johnj92131 replied to MancheKid86's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My 91 has the factory "Big Ton" package, aka "Metric Ton". I have the original window sticker for the truck. Mine has the original 5 leafs, plus 2 added overload leafs. (Previous owner hauled drywall). The factory package required automatic transmission, heavy duty trans cooler, long bed only, p/s & p/b, Bigger tires also. May have a couple of other minor tweeks also. If you have the above listed items, then I say Yes, you have the metric ton package. If it is a stick shift, it is not a stock metric ton package. If you have a short bed, it is not a stock package. -
That is the most important part, nobody hurt, just twisted metal.

91 MJ replacement wiring harnesses
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Don, I have most of the books. Just need to learn how to read them correctly. Have no prospect of a 91/92 Comanche. But 91/92 Cherokee, not real problem. I will check the fire wall harness when I get the car back. Think I have an electric shop in TJ that may be able to do the repairs. That will cost a bunch less than labor in San Diego. So if they can get the car running, I will be happy and go from their to checking it all when I get it home. -
I Agree. Just plain STUPID. But I have done a few stupid things too, like refuse to evacuate my home when ordered during the largest fire in California History. Fire burned 350 homes JUST in my neighborhood, 2600+ in San Diego County. Fire jumped more than 16 lanes of I-15. If the wind had not changed, the would have gone right to the Pacific ocean.

Do like that 47 Jeep! Always nice to see a good looking old car. The truck is 1 year older than me and looks much better cared for.

Time for a Ford axel swap? Which Explorers fit? Tons more of them out there. -
My Truck was on loan to a friend who lives south of the border in Tijuana. It was stolen from his driveway Monday night and recovered by the TJ Policia on Tuesday afternoon. Get this they found a fellow inside the truck trying to strip it. My wheels and tires were gone along with the battery. Lots of cut wires in the cab and the engine compartment. So...I will need to rewire the whole thing when I get it back home. Being a 91 High Output, I know I need a 91 or later Cherokee. Question is Just how late can be plug and play? The truck even lost the pillar lights. Do we have any ComancheClub members in TJ? The good news is that Senor Sanchez can get 10 years in prison! The TJ police did a much better job than I ever thought possible!

Congratulations to both of you! How about pictures and birth weights.

22 gallon Dakota tank in a 92 2.5L?
johnj92131 replied to HKB3's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here is a link to JCWhitney and Commanche tanks: http://www.jcwhitney.com/replacement-oe ... 169y1991j1 More at JCwhitney: http://www.jcwhitney.com/spectra-fuel-t ... 169y1991j1 Don't forget to check Ebay: Lots of tanks there with prices all over the place. If your 92 is a short bed then you need 18 gal tank. Long bed needs 23.5 gal tank -
:hijack: Just finished a deck out back. Jeff (or anyone else with experience), what product have you found that works the best on a treated wood deck and lasts the longest? I've tried Thompson's and a few others and wasn't satisfied with the results. I'd like to do it once then forget about it. Such a product? Would love to find such a product also. Maybe we both should check Consumer Reports? Wood needs to be taken care of, even Redwood neets to be restained every few years. If you want a near maintenance free wood like product, try Trex. Have seen some benches at my old condo that are 15 years old and have had ZERO care over the years. Still there and OK. Trex has a few down sides, like everything else.

Costco sells a very good product called "Oil Eater". 2.5 gallons for 13.95 or so. Used it for years, spray on, let sit a little while, brush, then wipe it up. New house has bad, old driveway stains. Oil Eater and a brass brush has lightend them up considerably.

Yes, a 1.9 TDI will cost more money than a 1.6 or 1.9 IDI engine. And the pump is controlled by a computer But the computer is your friend, you can get a chip tune for $295 to 400, add bigger nozzles and you get a bunch more power. I have added slightly larger nozzles for $200 and a chip tune for $240. So much more Torque, I had to replace and up grade the original clutch. To get seriously more power out of the IDI engine, you will have to spend more than $1000 on the fuel pump, plus the cost of larger nozzles. Still you will not get the torque at the low end you can get from a modified TDI. And the TDI will give you better fuel economy to boot. Have not run my 91 Comanche on a dyno, but I doubt the torque at the wheels will be close to the TDI. My Passat wagon weighs about 3100 lbs and my long bed Comanche with the High Output 4.0 a/c Dana 44 Big Ton package and a SnugTop shell weighs more than 34-3500 lbs. Plus, the truck is like a brick or a barn when it comes to air resistance.

Do your reading on www.tdiclub.com It is a fantastic resource. First thing is to learn to use search. Just about everything you want to know has been answered 10 times over. Another ComancheClub member is active on TDIClub, Alex22. Alex is one sharp dude on Jeeps and TDIs. There is a TDI swap topic there. It has all kinds of swap experience. Power enhancements? There in Spades. A number of different Jeep/TDI swaps documented. Not to bad mouth the Renault Diesel, but it is early 1980's technology, at best. And you are going to have an issue with parts and knowledge with the factory Renault Diesel. Not so with the VW TDI. Tons of resources and tons of spares all over the place.

No personal relationship with headers of any kind. BUT, everything I have ever read says they only do good at higher rpms. Any low rpm gains are very, very marginal. If you go screaming down the street or trail at 5200 rpms, then perhaps you get a few extra horsepower. Otherwise, save your money and buy an extra 100 gallons of gas.
