Her Favorite Color Is Chrome
johnj92131 replied to CommaComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
One other thing. When you see a nice truck on Ebay will all the good pictures - copy and save the image to your computer. I have failed to do this on several MJ's on Ebay and kick myself when I try, for example, to see how the jack and tools are supposed to be stored from the factory. I had all the correct stuff in my truck when it was stolen. When I recovered the truck, that stuff was gone. So I have to do it again and get fresh pictures! -
Her Favorite Color Is Chrome
johnj92131 replied to CommaComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you are looking for chrome Comanche drip rails - do not pass up on black ones! you can take the black color off and will have chrome underneath the black stuff! Stay away from the big mirrors as pictured on the Ebay truck. The doors need to have a special reenforcement inside the door. You can find chrome power and standard mirrors on the Cherokee rather frequently. If you are thinking about replacing the engine in an 86, consider getting a 3.4 litre chevy 60 degree V6 to replace the 2.8 v6 often found. The 3.4 engine is much improved and gives better mileage than the old 2.8 or even the 4.0 6 cylinder. You can also add an under the hood light from some of the XJ's that can be nice when you need to check the engine out in the dark. Think they come with a 15/20 foot coiled up extension so you can move the light around the Jeep. -
To the OP: I don't know if the big tank will fit in a short box truck or not. BUT, do yourself a big favor and buy a NEW tank. You don't need the headaches of a 25 year old rusty fuel tank that may or may not be as good as you hope it is. I have seen them on Ebay for $80 or so.

I have been around here for 5 or 6 years at least. I only can recall one, maybe two issues with a member here being a dead beat seller. And I know at least one of those fellows squared things away after a period of time. Not too worried about dead beat buyers, because if they don't send money, you don't send the goods. Now, personally I have shipped things without getting payment in advance. Maybe once I got stiffed. But i KNEW what I was doing and it was only a couple of bucks, so no worries. And I have observed more than a few folks here send needed items to another member for nothing or next to nothing. Just to help out. So I say we do not seem to have a problem here. We are a relatively small group and as far as I know, the current system works with out too much work for anyone. Personally over the last 3 or 4 months I got a super deal on a damn good tailgate that another member picked up at a pick a part yard in Los Angeles. And I took care of a fellow needing tail lights when I found a great set in a San Diego yard. Also found some decent drip rail molding an other member was looking for at a super bargain price ($6 for both - cost more than that to ship). A few years ago, somebody here pointed me to a free SnugTop long bed shell 300 miles away. I was also able to pass on a slightly damaged shell/topper to another member who was willing to pick it up (no charge). Not trying to tell you I am a great fellow. Just that there are a bunch of folks here who are willing to stretch and help a fellow Commanche owner. Not many bad apples I know of.

Automatic Or Manual
johnj92131 replied to 88whitemanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
What does the transmission have to do with recovering from a skid when the rear end breaks loose??? When I learned to drive a long time ago, I was told to turn my wheels in the same direction my rear end was moving. It worked with my 53 Studebaker with automatic. It worked for the 15 years I had my 69 Corvair with a 4 spd both on the slalom track and on the road. It worked with my Mustagn GT. It worked a couple of years ago in Wyoming when I hit black ice in a rental car. The transmission had nothing to do with recovering from a slide! -
Had a 1981 Chevy Impala Wagon with the 350 diesel engine. Blew one head gasket, fixed it. 3 months later the other head gasket blew. Car was less than 3 years old at the time. Head bolts were an issue (quality and number of them). 1982 they had a new head with more and better head bolts that supposedly fixed the problem, but the reputation of the engine was cast in stone. Understand the injection pump was also problimatic, but I did not have a problem with it. Got hight 20s mpg on the highway, 20+ in town. Lighter engine than the 350 chevy v8. Sounds like you made a killing!!!!

If you are looking for om617 jeep conversion information and adaptors, take a look at this site: http://www.mercedesdiesel4x4.com/ Understand the Comanche om617 conversion on here was destroyed in Catrina Wonder what it costs compared to the 4bt.... Also there was a thread from someone on here who did an om617 swap...don't remember much about it other than good details were few and far between.

My 91 has a column shift AW4 from the factory. -
YES, even with the trailer having brakes!

Factory tow package is Automatic Transmission, heavy duty trans cooler, 4.0 Also calls for an weight distributng hitch. Biotex is right, stopping will be the real problem. The Dana 44 had/has wider brakes than standard. Stil, it is no fun going down a hill with a 4500 trailer pushing you when you are trying to stop.

Alexia's 1987 To 1997 Comanche
johnj92131 replied to Alexia's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
15K? Just remember a GF would cost you a whole lot more than than that. And never be exactly what you wanted either!!! (They have lots of wonderful parts and pieces, but their heads allways need lots of work and I never seem to get them right). Don't think the "most interesting man in the world" does either. :brows: Either the original Grenadine Red done professionally or matte color done myself. Doing it myself in matte is about 10% of the cost which is what I am leaning towards. I already spent about $15,000 on this project. -
You are so right! A two door Cherokee with a long bed - 131 inch wheel base would add room to the cab and keep the near full size bed of the long bed truck. Dondge Dakota stretched cab had a 131 inch wheel base and only a 6 ft box. (I think). Raised roof from the Comanche would also help.

Comanche Inherently Unbalanced?
johnj92131 replied to Oddmodman's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Short answer: Yes, you have gone overboard! Longer answer, convert to right hand drive Comanche. That moves my 240 lbs @$$ to the other side and "balances the truck" The real truth is, either way, the truck was built within acceptable engineering standards. Example, to illustrate the point. My truck is a 91 long bed with the factory Big Ton package. It is rated to carry a load of 2240 pounds (including my fat @$$). I have carried a cargo of 3350 lbs plus my back side with not a problem. But I did not have to go far, did not have to make a quick stop or anything else. Cargo was 60 55 pound blockes on a pallet. Gas tank was also full with 23.5 gallons of gas. Total was 1350 lbs over Gross Vehicle weight factory rating. Full disclosure - I had new 225/75 tires and two non factory overload springson each side, plus the 22 year old factory Big Ton package. This was withing the last year. Final thought: Factory engineers were very conservative building the truck. Look at how crazy modified some owners have made their trucks and they still run and survive. Now, remember, NOBODY can protect/engineer against STUPID FOOLS. And there are a lot of us stupid fools in the world. There even some DAMN stupid fools in the world. The engineers who designed and built the Comanche were not fools in any way. They knew EXACTLY what they were doing, then tested it in every possible way. -

Anyone know what the truck sold for on Ebay? -
Watch out for a wrecked VW TDI, then put the TDI engine in the Samurai. You will have an engine that will go for ever and get you 45 to 50 mpg. I get 45 mpg in my 96 Passat wagon regurlarly

Like the Idea of PVC pipe! Send me a pm with your address and I will get them to you. They will have to be cleaned up a bit, but should be OK.

Gentlemen, Found two Comanches in a pick a part yard this weekdne. Got one set of chrome drip rails and one set of black drip rails. I do not need either set. Think I paid $8.00 for each set. Anyone who needs them can have them for my cost plus the shipping. Only thing is you have to NEED them, not just buy to hord or to resell. Fair enough???? I also need to figure out how to pack them. Anyone with some advice on packing??

My late wife's first car was a 61 Falcon (same body as your car). Had the 170 6 and Ford O Matic 2 speed autotrans. Her grandmother was the original owner. Helen got it in 1967 with 23K miles. We loaned the car to a friend, he wrecked it and that was that. The hot ticket for that car is to find a 200 or 250 cubic inch version of the same engine ( it came along later in the 60's) Ak Miller built one or two with three stock carbs and a few other "goodies". Brakes are a big weak point, but you just want it for crusing, so not a big deal. Remember the 64 Mustang was based on this Falcon.

Here you go - 5.3 aluminum bowtie in your Jeep: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/pts/3837470127.html Add a 6 speed automatic and everything would be fine.

Rodeo/Passport axel is 1 inch narrower than the D44 in the Comanche. Have a 2000 Rodeo and a 91 Comanche w/D44 in my driveway. Late (98+) Rodeo/Passport with auto trans has 4.10 rear end. 5 speed rear end is 4.30, had one of each.

If you are looking for parts from the U.K. I would give Ryan on the TDIClub a shout. He seems to have DHL shipping figured out. How did this engine get imported to the U.S.? Any idea of the weight for the engine and transmission? Why this engine instead of the VW ALH? Parts would be easy with the VW. JJ

Drawtite Hitch Part Number?
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thank You. Quick scan of the part numbers listed does not show any 75021 or 64009 on the auction block. But that is not all the hitches. So far it looks as if they are going for less than scrap value. But bidding closes in 24 hours.
