  1. How long are you going to run the winch? I am thinking the winch is going to depend on the battery for a high current supply when in use, rather than on alternator power alone. So it comes down to how long will it take your current altenator to top off the battery to 100% charge. For guidance on which alternator to use, you may want to look at the police package XJ, it used a high idle switch to support a heavy electrical (and cooling) load expected on a police used XJ. Not sure what rating the alternator was. If you check the DIY section, you will find a high output altenator from either the Grand Cherokee or a Dodge truck. That may be the solution for you. Here is the link for the DIY altenator upgrade: http://comancheclub.com/topic/33000-junk-yard-upgrades/?hl=alternator 136 amps from GC V8 alternator and a 117 amp upgrade from a 4 cylinder Dakota. If that is not enough to run your winch, you may want to use a 2nd 12 volt battery. The dual battery was an export option for the XJ. HAM radio operators use a dual battery setup to support their communications and still keep the car battery to start the car.
  2. Finally getting around to installing the full 6 factory speakers in the truck. Problem is it is a base truck with no wiring for the tweeters or the speakers behind the seats. Not sure how to connect them properly. Do I just daisy chain the speakers from the tweeters to the door speakers to behind the seat speakers? Thanks for any assistance
  3. So what mpg did you get on the last trip with 1000 lbs in the bed? I think we call all "assume" you averaged 75 mph for most of the trip in Interstate 5. Last week coming back from Las Vegas in the Comanche, I averaged about 18.6 mpg. Average speed was 75+
  4. Any help on this? I just don't want to bugger up the threads with the wrong size screw. Saw one in a Vegas salvage yard last weekend - P.O. used very large self tapping screws. Not what I want to do. Much rather use the right screw/bolt. Any help appreciated.
  5. Anyone looking for a supposed running 1986 Jeep turbo diesel 2.1 engine? Found one on the local craigslist, see my post in Classified section. It is not mine. I know nothing about it. Just saw the ad and thought I should share it.
  6. Found this engine only in San Diego Craigslist: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/esd/pts/4872115139.html Ad will expire very soon, so I am cutting and pasting below. This add is for the engine only!!!! DRIVE THE ENGINE BEFORE YOU BUY IT! I am taking this engine out to install a different Diesel ,, it is a good running engine. It accelerates great. Very powerful, I believe it was rebuilt at some point but I do not know the history of this engine. The diesel I am selling is being taken out of my factory installed, Jeep Cherokee. It is a 2.1 Diesel. Text for Details. Video of running engine available. The engine will cost you 1200 bucks. it will come with EVERYTHING that is attached and related to the engine. Alt, starter, pulleys, fuel pump, air intake, etc etc... The transmission and transfer case are also for sale. The transmission is an AX5, it works good and shifts good and does not make noise. 7. Ran across this build for a Tacoma on Yahoo. Lots of pictures and some decent ideas. http://imgur.com/a/sR3r9/layout/horizontal
  8. Can anyone tell me the correct screw size for the lower rear trim panel? This is the one below the rear window that is screwed into the floor. The jack stands up against this panel. I managed to put my screws in a very safe place, now I don't remember the proper size. Thanks,
  9. A few more thoughts about a full gauge cluster and column shifter. The 90 and earlier clusters can be converted to a column shifter. The problem is cutting the "window" for the shifter window. A possible solution is to buy a set of white face decals to cover the faces in the 6 gauge cluster. Take the face off the big fuel gauge (it has the window for the column shifter) and put the new face decal for the tach on the face of the big fuel gauge. Now mount the old big fuel gauge face plate on the big tach. Bingo! Now cut the decal for your shifter window. This way you are just cutting the decal after you have put it on the fuel gauge face. No metal cutting involved and you have the nice clean factory cut metal.
  10. You MAY be able to find a "police" cluster for your column shifter. The "police" cluster has no tach but has all the minor gauges in the full gauge cluster. As an added bonus, it has a certified speedometer that goes to 120 mph. However, not all "Police" clusters had the column shifter, rather some did. Another issue is you are looking for a 1988 and the "police" clusters I have seen are all for the 91+ MJ with the electronic speedometer. The DIY section has a full gauge conversion for the column shifter automatic, with 2 different solutions.
  11. Last Saturday at the Nevada Pic a Part yard, 5100 N. Lamb Rd Las Vegas Nevada. Spotted a nice 86 with power windows, OEM fog lights (very nice) and a cargo box light. I took the switch and the drivers interior window/door lock unit. But did not have time to take the fog lights or finish getting the cargo light off. Screws were just spinning but not rusted in place. So for anyone in or around Las Vegas, grab these items.
  12. Don, Notice the Grand Cherokee mini console shows mpg. Am I correct to "assume" that requires an OBDII engine management system to display mpg? Or can it still read mpg with the 91+ OBDI ecu in our Comanche? I have actually been eying the GC mini-console as an addition to my Comanche. I know it could do the outside temperature, but did not know much else other than the extra lights. Know anyone who has put the mini-console in an XJ or an MJ?
  13. Seat covers can be removed and "new" covers installed. When I converted from a bench to buckets, I mixed and matched parts from 4 or 5 pairs of buckets to make one set of buckets just the way I wanted. My base seat covers came from a 4 door Laredo that were near perfect. 1 of the seat may also have come from the same Laredo. The 2 door seat frames came from a couple of other XJ/MJs. Foam was also a mix and match problem. Same story with the headrests. So, keep an eye on what you can find in the junk yards, take the covers off, wash the seat covers at home. Put them on your existing seats and watch for a better pair of seat covers, then do it again till you get a great set. A wanted ad my also help you find some really good covers. Gray is very common and the red/burgandy is not common. Someone has to want those red/burgandy covers.
  14. The real market for these is EBay. Much larger reach than just the Comanche Club. I also wonder if it would be easier to locate a vendor of these trim pieces for other brands, i.e. Mopar, Ford, Chevy? They may have the sources and scale of purchase to get this done. Still, I know the largest seller of Corvair parts - Clarks Corvair Parts started 40+ years ago with just a couple of products. Now they have a 3-400 page catalog and thousands of reproduction items. I actually would buy some of these reproductions. Starting with the 2 door seat bezels.
  15. Are you sure you were looking to buy a truck Jim? You have a bunch of them. Now about the Mary Jane for sale....
  16. I am willing to bet what you have seen as a very short 3rd bed is a custom "bob'ed" bed done by the owner. Some people shorten their bed overhang to avoid dragging it off the road.
  17. I prefer the full site rather than the mobile view on the phone (Galaxy S4). At the bottom part of the mobile screen, you can go to the full site. I still prefer to use my laptop or my desktop and view the site on a 20 or 28 inch screen. Easier on these 67 year old eyes. Not to mention the full size key board vs the phone keyboard.
  18. MJ86, You really have found the very best Comanche resource on the internet right here. The members here have done just about everything you want to imagine with and to their Comanche truck. Sometimes, they have done the same thing several times just to make small improvements and the neat thing is that they will share that knowledge with you by answering questions, offering links, providing part resources and just about anything else, including some really good deals. I am on my ninth year here in the Comanche Club and I still learn new things all the time. You can improve your own knowledge by reading some of the build threads on this site. There are likely more than a dozen build threads related to putting the 4.0 in an 86. There are also other options, like upgrading the 2.8 V6 to a 3.4 V6 with fuel injection. Again, a number of threads with a bunch of details and links that can help with that direction. Our trucks are getting older and parts sources are drying up. You will find alternate parts sources here also. So stick around and you can get that 86 running great.
  19. "Think" the dash speakers were small tweeters, located just next to the courtsey lamps that iluminate the foot wells. (Same level as the ash tray in the lower dash cover under the steering wheel. Does this make sense??? You will find them in a higher trim level Cherokee. Understand the 97+ Cherokee has the tweeters in the door.
  20. Klutch: Welcome to the group. Just a caution about the towing mirrors and replacement doors. These large mirrors came from the factory with an in the door "reenforcing plate" for the lower mirror support that was mounted inside the factory door. When you replace the factory original doors with doors from a salvage yard, you need to remove the "reenforcing plate" from the old doors and put it in your new doors. Search is your friend. But it is some what of a pain. As I recall reading, a big hammer applied to the fire wall is needed to fit the 4.0 into an 86. My truck is a 91, so I have not done this. Again, search is your friend. The "easy upgrade path" for the 2.8 V6 is the 3.4 V6. My suggestion is do not spend any more $$ on the 2.8, go directly to the 3.4 upgrade. You have a running 2.8 now, so use it while you build a 3.4 replacement. There are several very recent discussions with great links: http://comancheclub.com/topic/45707-help-me-decide-28-to-34-or-40/ http://comancheclub....ns-for-25-4cyl/ Again, welcome to the club.
  21. I learned to drive on a 1953 Studebaker with a Borg Warner automatic. My second car was a 1959 Rambler with a 3 on the tree. Since that Rambler, I have always had at least one car with a manual transmission. For many years, I drove a manual trans car from Orange County to West Los Angeles on the Santa Ana and Santa Monica freeways every day. You do not get worse traffic than that anywhere. So I am well programed with a manual transmission. My Comanche has an Asin Warner automatic, a direct decedent from the automatic in my old 53 Stude. For the truck, I prefer the automatic transmission. But that is a function of how I use the truck.
  22. Understand that "just a truck" thing. I paid $1150 for my white, 91 long bed, column shift, metric ton. Then converted the interior to the same interior as this Ebay truck. Mine was a base truck with rubber floor mats.
  23. Noticed that rocker switch right away. Looks like it controls the under the bumper add on lights. Not sure why a white switch was used when there are so many black rocker switches that could have been used. The interior pictures look good. With the factory block of plate on the console, I would not doubt the truck is close to original. Noticed the under the foot well lights also. My question about this truck - why does the guy want to sell it if he just put a new engine in it? And kook911, if $4500 is pretty steep, then what would you think fair? Me, I will leave it to the auction process to establish a fair market value. Gomanche. Good luck on this truck. Hope you get it for a good price and it is what you want.
  24. Cherokee ==> floor shift. I can't think of any way changing the steering column on an XJ could possibly affect the transmission shifting. AI didn't read good enough either so gotta be just a coincidence Makes at least 3 of us who did not read the thread title correctly.
  25. Read this recent thread: http://comancheclub.com/topic/45628-higher-comp-pistons-for-25-4cyl/ You will find some possibly usefull links about the V6 engine in this thread.
