4.0 lifter noise solution ?
johnj92131 replied to Strokermjcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Being vigilant about oil changes is probably more important then the oil you use in these engines, anyway. Exactly! Changing oil gets rid of the garbage and contamination in the oil. -
Have you looked at this one? http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/4901774192.html

The cluster swap is the best "kit" you can buy. It is plug and play. Just get the correct one for your MJ from the same year/engine XJ. No muss, no fuss. It just works.

Not to take this thread off track, but where is the how to??

What are the down sides to the 4.7 stroker?

So who made the cam that failed?? -
Hear you on stealing a fancy radio. Mine had a Sony when I first got it. Took a year for some to take it from the truck. 6 years later I replaced it with a stock radio. Last week it crapped out. I have 1 more stock radio I will try. Wire colors seem to have changed every couple of years at jeep. Best to stay with 91 to 94 I think. Also just found out base truck like mine was not wired for more than 2 speakers. I also need to figure out radio wiring.

Swing out tire carrier only for me. Drop down carrier makes using the tail gate a big chore. And I would want the tire behind the driver, not centered on the tail gate. Why? So I can see what is behind in my rear view mirror.

Tire question - Why wouldnt an LT235 fit?
johnj92131 replied to Bonkers's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I ran a full set of 235/75 x 15 Kumho SR21 tires for a while with no problems on stock aluminum wheels. Only reason they are not on the truck now is the truck was stolen in Tijuana and the thieves took the tires and wheels. -
Dakota replacement taillights -
johnj92131 replied to Thiefcatcher's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
They look pretty good so far! It will be very nice to see them when you are finished. Really like the creativity of simply turning the Dakota lights upside down to get a better fit! What year Dakota? Where did you get them? What price? -
Cummins B3.3 Powered Mj Build!
johnj92131 replied to krustyballer16's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Why try to save a dollar or two on an unknown quality product? Krustyballer16 tried to save some money and work with poor fitting Sherman body parts and had to do it all over again. Just buy the known good hood shock kit from Red Line and be done with it the first time. With all the time and work that has gone and will go into this truck, why try to save $20 on a hood shock kit of unknown quality? Makes no sense at all in the long run.- 299 replies

Should be able to buff it off with something like a green pad. Might want to try a paint remover?

Hi Joe, Welcome to the Comanche world. One of the things I would be interested in for my Comanche is a heavier duty version of the factory stock step bumper, perhaps with swing a way tire carrier on the drivers side of the truck (better visibility). So I will be interested in seeing what kind of a rear bumper you come up with. Care to share your plans or a sketch? Thanks,

15k 87 2.5l MJ eBay
johnj92131 replied to relyt120's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Seems no one else does either. He has not got his $15K yet! Perhaps a fellow from Nigeria will send him a $21K certified check and ask for the truck and $6K in change (sent to a Caymen Island bank). -
Some very good pictures in your album. Can you tell me what years that overhead console comes from? Looks like you put it into a Comanche. Would love to know more about it. Can you point me to some posts with information? Thanks.

Jim, Anita's son purchased a Dakota new with the V6, it ran a full life with minimal trouble as a daily driver. Just replaced the Dakota with a Tacoma this year. Just nothing special about the engine. Should be easier to put a good 4.0 or even a 2.5 in an MJ. How did that old Nissan diesel conversion turn out? That conversion could be worth the work to me.

1988 Comanche on Ebay
johnj92131 replied to madmax's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Think I will offer him $245.00 for the truck. I should be able to junk it and make a dollar or two at that price. So this guy paid $2500 for a rhino coated truck and is trying to resell it for $15K? Do have to wonder if I could sell him some tulips. Here some people made quite a few guilders reselling tulips some time back. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania -
So now I need a new engine, advice requested
johnj92131 replied to teamsmith's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Be Very careful thinking about a Titan motor, stroker or otherwise. Their reputation on the Jeepstrokers forum is not good! Golan has a good reputation, from what I have read. HESCO is good, but expensive! As others have said, the cheapest route is a running donor XJ. I would say between 1991 and 1996 (OBD1). With the donor you should get everything you need to do the H.O. conversion and do it at your pace. If you want to look at a stroker you may have some trouble locating a good used, cheap 258 crank. Scat has a new 258 crank that can be purchased for about $400. Your best source of stroker information is www.jeepstrokers.com Very nice looking truck. With all the work you, Dad, and uncle have put in it, I am sure you will make good choices on the engine fixes. -
Looking for Comanche in or close to ohio .
johnj92131 replied to Strokermjcomanche's topic in Wanted
That 91 eliminator in Spokane Washington looks darn good. Price is on the high side, but seller will negotiate. I know, it is not in Ohio and likely way to far away. But it sure looks clean and is 4x4. http://comancheclub.com/topic/46053-this-super-clean-1991-eliminator-in-wa/ Lots of pictures on the craigslist ad. I know nothing other than what is in the ad. But, if I were in the market I would be willing to drive 1200 miles from San Diego to Spokane for a serious look-see. From Ohio, it is a 2100 mile drive. -
Whats wrong with this ad?

Oppinions on which mirror type to use
johnj92131 replied to Jacob Ochs's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When I got my truck it had the stock "Ford" type door mounted mirrors. The view was great, but the mounting points of the mirrors were very worn. Net result? When driving the mirrors bounced all over the place making it very hard to get a stable view of what was behind. Even with every mounting point properly bolted down the glass was still not stable when driving at highway speeds or bumpy roads. So I changed to stock pillar mounted mirrors. Then the view was stable, but considerable smaller. About 4 years ago I went to 97+ mirrors because they fit easily and gave me a bit bigger field of view. As an added bonus the 97+ mirrors are power adjustable, which helps when I tow something. If I could find a bit larger pillar mounted mirror, I would consider it. My 2000 Isuzu Rodeo has a bit wider pillar mounted mirror. It does give a better rear field of view when towing. But doesn't look adaptable to the MJ. -
Custom Comanche adjustable upshift light
johnj92131 replied to Jacob Ochs's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That does NOT sound weird. Doing it just because it is fun is a great thing. -
What year is it? What part of the country are you in? The truck is worth what every you paid for it. Why? Because you were a willing buyer and the seller was a willing seller. What ever the sales price was - that is what the truck is worth at that time and place.

This is what I love about the ComancheClub. People just keep coming up with great solutions to different problems. Does this work on the 4.0 as easily? -
Custom Comanche adjustable upshift light
johnj92131 replied to Jacob Ochs's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not to throw cold water on the project, but... I learned to drive on a 1953 Studebaker with an automatic transmission. Second car was a 1959 Rambler with a 3 on the tree. After another stick shift Rambler it was on the the same British sports car you see James Bond driving in Dr. No. Then it was a new 1969 Corvair with a 4 speed. Had stick shifts all my life. Been doing it so long, it is second nature to listen to the engine and shift. I watch my tachometer also - needed to on my rotary engined Mazda. That thing hit red line really fast. don't get me wrong, it is a nice project. But I do have to ask - what good is it?
