If you just ignore the annual registration, yes you will have to pay all the back registration fees and penalties when you decide to register the car again. BUT if you plan on taking the car off the road for a few years , for $21 you can file a Planned NonOperation, before your current registration expires. You can also file for a Planned NonOperation up to 3 months after the last registration expires. But not after that. If you buy a car from a new or used car dealer, the dealer will charge you for the registration and make sure the paper work is filed with the DMV. However, if you buy a car from a private party, the buyer is required to notify the DMV within something like 10 days. Sometimes buyers don't bother to tell the DMV. So California has a form for the seller to fill out, saying I sold this cart to "gogmorgo" on this date. So yes, the new buyer could just drive the car till he gets stopped for a ticket. Many dead beat drivers will steal the current registration sticker from another car's plates. This works till you get stopped and don't have a current registration. My nephew drove his motorhome for 6 months without paying registration, but then he got a ticket and his car impounded. So you can drive for ever if the cops don't pull you over for no current tags. But after 6 months with no tags - you will be walking home when the cop pulls you over.

In California, insurance companies comunicate directly to DMV. No insurance, your registration is suspended till you buy insurance and pay a fee to the DMV. My nephew did not pay his registration and after 6 months and 5 tickets, got his motor home impounded. Oh, also no insurance. Then asks me to pay the $2000 to get it out of impound. Both his mom and I told him no, he screwed up and needs to deal with it himself. He is a 33 year old adult. Sorry for the personnel crap.

Steering Column, Tilt? Push me over the ledge.
johnj92131 replied to Jeep Driver's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just something else to go wrong is right. Fixed the tilt wheel about 8-9 years ago and now notice it will need repair again in a couple of years. -
Somebody has to pay the taxes or the roads go to ruins. So I don't really mind paying. Tax policy is just like making sausage...I don't really like everything that goes into it. But I do want roads maintained. Not saying Life is Fair or Taxes are Fair. But they are just like the weather, everybody complains about taxes. Registration fees alone don't pay enough to maintain the roads anywhere I know. But it is a simple, low cost way to collect taxes That is why the fuel is taxed, easy to collect from all drivers. The federal gas tax has not been increased in about 25 years, so that is not doing what it once did and roads sure cost more now than 25 years ago. Just be glad you/we are not in Europe and paying their road/gas/registration taxes! Of my 6 cars, at least one is on loan much of the time, sometimes 2 cars are on loan. I keep them all insured, because I like to be able to use any of them when I want.

Got my registration renewal notice last week for the Comanche: $124.00 total. This year I also need a Smog Certificate, so figure another $50 or so. No special plates.

Better cooling for the Comanche?
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Don. I have no transmission temperature data, just water temperature data. Also have a fair amount of towing experience with the factory Big Ton/Metric Ton package. "Think" my AW4 is original to the truck and still runs well at 300K+ miles. So I "think" the factor got the transmission cooling right to tow up to 5000 lbs. That said, I would agree with just using the Mopar trans cooler. No point to heating up the trans fluid with hot radiator coolant, except possibly to boil off any moisture in the trans fluid. -
Took my kids to watch the last landing of the Shuttle Challenger at Edwards Air Force Base in 1985. Great memories. But watch the videos of Walter Cronkite report on the Space Race. There you see the most trusted man in America reporting live on the most public and spectacular project ever carried out. Only public thing I can imagine more emotional was the end of World War II.

Looks very interesting. Assume a mechanical problem. But pictures look very good. I do not need another project. -
Testing the Prototype AW4 Deep Transmission Pan
johnj92131 replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Don, I know you are good about test data. What about data with stock pan before new pan. Care to share? Old data from Corvair aluminum oil pans showed oil pick up had to be lowered to get cooler oil at bottom of pan. Aside from higher pan capacity, doesn't improved oil cooler seem to make more sense? Good to see you in the test! -
Testing the Prototype AW4 Deep Transmission Pan
johnj92131 replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Don, Will you be doing any fluid temperature checking before and after installation of this pan? I "assume" temperature control is one of the main functional reasons for a finned deeper pan. John -
Man, I know your pain with wife who only sees car/truck as a transport appliance. No Jeep or old car is a Maytag. Anita has no ability to understand why I don't simply get a new Camry every 3 years, like she does. Nothing to do with đź’° at all.

SpaceX is doing something very different today than NASA's historic job. SpaceX is driving down the cost of a maturing technology - putting satellites in earth orbit, by injecting some price competition into the earth satellite market. Both NASA and the Russian/Soviet space agency were true pioneers - doing what had never been done in history. The Saturn Rocketdyne F-1 engine is still the most powerful liquid fueled rocket engine ever built at a 1.55 million lbs of thrust. Designed, but never built improved F-1 engines would be rated at 1.8 million lbs of thrust. Each Merlin 1D rocket engine used in the Falcon 9 has 140,000 lbs of thrust.

Hey Wombat, Good to hear you are still around. Take good care of that diesel.

First, I read this as project "CamRy" and could not understand the name. Finally figured out is is project "camy". So take my comments with in mind. Most ls1 engine conversions end poorly. Just my observation over the last 10-12 years. I like the Wagoner front end conversion. Get an ax15 trans when you can, replace it when pukgoat fails. If it ain't broke don't fix it. 97 door conversion is nice and not too hard. Do 97 door weather stripping at same time. BTW, get 97 doors with power windows and door locks. Your lady will like it. Full 97 interior conversion is much more complex. For me, converting to Grand Cherokee Seats was a huge comfortable improvement. Highly appreciated. Get the truck running well as a stock truck. Sort out shocks and everything on front end. Do all of cruiser54 Renix tips. They are gold for these old trucks. Oh- quit using photo bucket!!!! Their pictures don't show up for many.

I worked in battery industry in Mid 70s. Lots of identical batteries come down the finishing line to get different decals on them. With batteries, you buy amp hours and a replacement warranty. Nothing more. Compare apples to apples from Costco and Walmart. I think Costco wins. Walmart will have cheaper low end products. Higher end, long term value, Costco. Hands down.

Price aside.... (JCR Manche Roof Rack)

I can not imagine a useful function for that product. And that includes any cosmetic function. -
5 years ago, we made a winter trip from along I-40 back to San Diego just as the road was reopened from a snow closure. Literally saw dozens of SUVs that slid off the road. So... If you are going to run into snow on I-40, seriously consider going south to I-10. A whole lot better in bad weather.

Yes, there is an entrance fee for everything. Results of people who don't want to pay taxes to fund public treasurers. Being a senior citizen, I have a Golden eagle pass. Why national Parks should only be a good deal for seniors, I have no clue. Seems to me these treasures should be shared with all. Especially, our kids and grandkids. Can not think of a better way to share what a great place this country is. End of rant.

Meteor Crater is just off I-40 and worth a short stop. http://meteorcrater.com/ Santa Fe, New Mexico is a wonderful place to spend a day. Parking a truck and trailer is an issue. Santa Fe is the oldest state capitol in the entire United States. Founded in like 1607, it has been the government seat ever since, under Spain, Mexico and the United States. A good bit out of your way: Fort Union National Monument, also in New Mexico. Located on the old Santa Fe Trail, you can still see the ruts in the trail from the old Conestoga Wagons.

h4 light bulb comparision
johnj92131 replied to cody4359's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Cody, If I understand your pictures correctly: #1 is Hella Glass low beams. Shows a good cut off pattern that keeps light on the road in front of you and cuts of light to the left that would be in the on coming drivers eyes. #2 is LED lights. Shows light higher up the fence and a wider beam to the left - in to the oncoming drivers eyes on a 2 lane road. #3 is Hella Glass high beams. Shows higher/brighter light directly on the house and similar sharper cut off to the left. #4 is LED lights. Wider beam dispersal pattern to left than #3. Looking at the house, I see less light than with #3 (Hella?). Based on these pictures = #1 and #3 would seem to be the best lights. Meaning Hella's are better than the LED's you tested. Did I get it correct? -

How about a Rotary engine truck? My old 1973 Mazda Rx3 was a real rocket at the time. The Rotary engine trucks were the fastest by far of the time. -

Black roof is a problem for me. Why heat up the cabin with a black roof?? Glad to see someone put thought into repainting their Comanche.
