Disconnect it at both ends and throw some grease on it. That fixed it for me.

I had a longbed shaft rebuilt and shortened when I went SOA on my SWB.

I vote option 4. Make it a super badass DD. Upgrade anything that can be upgraded.

I vote kerosene. Propane can be finicky in real cold weather.

Keep looking. You can find MJ 44's on Craigslist every now and then. Try looking for an XJ 44, all you'd need for that would be new perches and shock mounts. Have you looked into an Explorer 8.8?, later ones are of the disk brake variety.
