fabrication pretty much just starting out... don't even have a angle grinder, yet... I just have basic hand tools, electric drill, and pneumatic impact wrench... and a paint gun :D if i where to get something welded there is a machine shop in town that i have done used in the past, and they are Comanche lovers too! small project, maybe something that will take 1-3 weekends the rear D44 i snagged off an XJ i know the perches need to be moved and was going to get that machine shop to do it for me and as far as tires go currently running 225/75R15 , but plan to eventually get some 31s or 32s I thought i saw on here that the front Dana 44 from a wrangler would work but don't know what years
-
what jeeps came with a front Dana 44 that is useable on our Comanche's.. I have seen D44s on the front of MJs and XJs but don't know if that was ever a stock option.. I want to know what to look for when i am at the junkyard. thanks

can you drill a hole in the bolt and use a small lock? or use a cable that can be put through the bolt and locked?
-
My cousin text me that he can fab stuff for me at Auburn University's machine shop! But I gotta pick it up, and stick around for home games.. its only a 4 hour drive and free or cheap tickets so i guess its worth it! I just can't think of anything i need made right off.

Blue88Comanche replied to buck_hunter's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
will it work no not with what you have, you will need a 4x4 transmission.. our Comanches from 86-mid 89 had 21 spline output shafts and mid 89-92 had 23 spline. -

Blue88Comanche replied to buck_hunter's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:agree: get a donor Cherokee or comanche, but as far as tranmissions go get a AX-15 with 23 spline output with a np231 TC.. that would have been stock from 89 up... keep in mind if you just do the part by part that there are 21 spline and 23 spline transfer cases and transmissions, and run away from any BA-10s you come across... 23 spline is better and more common (in my local Junk yards) I got a 1989 XJ 4x4 for the conversion on dads MJ for just over $400, a donor is the cheapest and best option -
What color is this?
Blue88Comanche replied to drcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
olive drab be i first guess -
looking at the drive shaft chart my stock drive shaft is 43.25 inches from the CT to the D35.. the chart also says the D44 uses a 42.25 inch... so just to confirm I need to get a new drive shaft or have my current one shortened, or is there a way i can make due with what i have? what are some good spring perches? and i plan to keep it spring under axle.. the D44 came from a 91 Cherokee 2wd Thanks.

Picked up a Dana 44 rear axel from a u pull it, along with drivers quarter panel, steering wheel, and chrome grille... Then promptly drank 3 32oz poweraid drinks at the nearest gas station, I have a feeling I will be regreting that tonight.... Painted the base coat on the hood of dads MJ and bought a new key cylinder lock for the former MJ donor... Looks like we will be fixing up an XJ. RockMJ nice little pup, our beagle Chaos, like to hang out with me under the jeeps :D

Is there anything i should know before i swap the cruse control stuff from the donor 89 Cherokee auto to my 88 Comanche 5 speed? I know that i will need to put a turn off switch on the clutch and brake petals. I saw somewhere saying just to have that turn off switch on one petal or the other, but i like how it is in my uncles 2001 Mercury cougar 5 speed where it cuts off when i press the clutch or the brake. should be just move over the new steering column stalk, wiring, cruse control vacuum unit and the throttle body arm that the cables connect to, did i miss something?

Replace side mirrors
Blue88Comanche replied to Blue88Comanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
the top left in the diagram you posted... and on the out side of the jeep i removed 5 screws ( had to fold the mirror to get to them.) -
I bought Dad some replacement mirrors for his MJ but i can't figure out how to get the old ones off, so far i have removed 5 screws.. i don't want to damage anything by prying it off
