Swapped New Struts In My Caravan, Now The Steering Wheel Is Off...
danbyrambler replied to Pete M's topic in The Pub
Went to my Dodge forum & dfreeman616 is correct - slotted holes - for camber adj - If you've the old struts they prob have wear marks from where the strut to knuckle mount bolts were? - - Followed a link & came up with http://www.2carpros....el-alignment- - The toe adj at the end caught my eye - - - in short: Center SW & CLAMP - - Set toe - - - Adjust steering gear to tie rod boots at the inner tie rod - - -remove clamp - - - Found no reliable info on caster - - Having said all this & thinking back only onna 95 & a 99 did I replace struts & I had a shop do the 99 - while I waited - maybe 30 min - on the 95 I just in & out & outside of the 3hr or so it took me no prob - - Not recommending, but there's always the old make do until warmer weather arrives - Nothing obvious - drives ok? - Pop the SW-center & drive keeping an eye/ear out for any red flags - Hope somma this helped - Kinda just jumped in cause mini vans/Toyota4x4s were a $ makin hobby for me & I still love the vans :hmm: Don't know WTF goin on wi text inna this post - - tried to edit - Maybe automatic BS edit feature :hmm: WTF? Is my PC infected wi the Jim O' virus? The link is: wwwdot2carprosdotcom& /questions/dodge-caravan-1999-dodge-caravan-front-or-4-wheel-alignment  -

No - knuckle moves, so does SW - - - Went & looked at my rampage since the fwd L bodies shared tons of suspension parts with 1st 2 gens minivans & I don't see how things could've changed much for the basic layout for the 96-2000 jobs - - - - dunno - - steering wheel was centered B4, right? - - did you have to disco the racks ti rods for the strut install? - - The only other thing under there on my truck is the steering couppler - - - 220K - - the struts were shot twice over if OE - ti rods prob need replace too if orig. -
Proof that Virgil Exner was a coke head :ack:

Are you the usual driver? Don't know how many times I've gotten behind the wheel of my wifes/daughters ride & noticed that something had changed since I last drove it. Other'n that I dunno - Links & struts only shouldn't affect the SW position -

What year/engine Caravan? Miles on donor parts? -
morgo's correct - - Perpetual motion - Snake Oil thingy - - Was popular for awhile inna mid '70s - both H gens & H20 bubblers - - I remember reading the how 2s in Popular Mechanics & Mother Earth News - Probably more - - Tried both on wifes 76 Olds Cutlass Salon 260cid auto somewhere around 77-78 - Didn't tell her - Zero change - Gave up a little short of a year - got tired of checking/refilling water for no results - only thing pos, if you could call it that, was an increased awareness of just how rough my sweetie is on an automobile - - GFL! - - Some things are better left unknown - - "Oh that noise/whatever? It just started yesterday- I was gonna tell you about it". . . . . Gotta love it

Wifes already zeroed in on the cup holders - I swear by everything holy she'd pass ona AC cobra 'cause no CHs - Console pic was to show CH detail - Looks better than in photo - will add Pic with less severe angle later today - Slightly shorter console's gonna allow donut spare behind seats & still have full open of armrest - Had factry cover donut in cab of an '87 - looked good but hindered OE armrest lid opening. Seats are from late 90s-03 06 r so Wrangler - medium red center along wi fox wood dash breaks monotony of all gray interior

Nice January thaw weather so I fooled with the truck a little - Don't know if this is final - was easy enough - Yanked the full length & in with a Mini & a console from a 95 - 98 or so Frontier/Xterra - - Don't know which I like best - easy reversal - - - - Had to trim approx 1 inch from bottom - Nissan console sits a little higher - Cup holder inserts are inna shop somewhere - Console was left over from when I was into Toyotas - Got it ata JY for not much - Prices on eBay tend to be stupid - Anyway, Comfortable, sits a little higher & has 2 holders - - Now Gotta find a place for PM switch. Before After Console Pic lifted from eBay - Bottom contour easy enuff to reshape

Don't know a thing about the 2.5s, but . . . Are 2.5 carbed IMs water cooled/heated also? How is the manifold fed? What is the return path? Just curious . . . I've a 1984 Dodge Rampage - carbed 2.2 - - It had a water jacket attached to the manifold - Emissions thing & no sensor - fed from t stat housing/out to heater core valve - Hurts nothing to disable on these engines - - Same era engines - maybe same purpose? - - If no sensor on water part of manifold should be no prob with bypass - - Just a few thoughts B4 happy hour

Me too, Thanks again, RM -
Well . . . . . the learning curve for your truck may take a while before it starts to shrink with only vague info/understanding about the engine components - - Anyway, IMO Single plane manifold + cam is biggest part of trucks 3K+ performance & unlikely 2B causing your probs - Jegs explains IMs basics as well as anyone - All kinds of ideas for SBC & what makes 'em go - - - http://www.jegs.com/... Manifold Guide

Too early to consider just the carb - - - Been a while since I campaigned H hot rod, Some what I recall. . . . So, 650cfm - What cid? - Vac/Mech second'ry carb? Single/dual plane manifold? - vac/mech dist? Starting - sounds like a learning the carb thing - could be, repeat-COULD be, vapor lock thing but not likely and NOT worth starting the hypo-I knew a guy stuff - most likely the e choke being a little much - - - Almost have to be harder warm if same cold start technique applied - one pump-two pump-no pump-wifes pump/crank til HFO type - Edelbrock made intakes back in my early, no carbs & I'm not familiar with'em - Holley's were it then - Still so IMO if you're gonna/wanna/enjoy the tinker/tune thing - - The fuel level adjust on most makes them a no brainer for me - Same for jet access - - Just about as many Holley parts/adapters/mods/whatever as stars inna universe - everywhere - online/o'autovance/walMart/Quiktrip - Ditto for Holley & SBC engine info - - Libraries full of it printed & online - - Healthy % of it PURE BS too - - Obvis a read, reread & consider - - -Anyway: Getting on it - - Sounds like starving - accel pump thing - - could be time/dist also Letting off - - - Vac metering valve? - - time/dist thing? RPM - - - Gets with it 3000rpm on? Expected perform for cam? Cam specs? Jetting - rich til airflow catches up? Good luck - - Keep it coming - Seems 2b lots of experenc'd hot rodders on CC

Not an expert, but have done a dozen or so PUs - Always shopped for price mainly because all of my trucks were getting/had buckets & floor consoles so very little carpet visible or was gonna be subjected to wear - The only wear area really was the spot to the right of the gas pedal - Never found a way to avoid wearing through floor mats where my boot/shoes heel grinds through - - - - I always spread carpet on the pavement & let the sun relax the set that the shipping carton creates - - Wife's hair dryer, tin snips & box cutter are the main tools I've used - Pretty straight forward - You'll know it when you get there - - Made a few boo boos of course, like around AC evap box/drain but a little silicone to anchor the repair seam/patch made them go away - I run a pair of 14/12 ga stranded down the center jic I wanna change or add something behind the seats - Use 'em for pull wires so I don't have to yank the console - - - Went cheap on sound deadening/padding cost also - Brushed on lots of RustOleum HD red primer & regular house carpet foam underlayment put down while the primer was still wet - The primer served as an adhesive - the foams easy to cut/shape - figured it'd let moisture evap when my wife/kids dumped Pepsi all over the place - same as in the house - seemed to work ok & easy enuf -

Sounds good - - I'm in for a pair. -
Pick your poison sort of thing - - - I drove nothing but 2nd Gen Toyota 4X4 PUs from 1986-2010 - Bought my 1st new in 86 - Sold it still running strong @ 335K - only repair was a head gasket about 250k - timing chain & water pump same time - Chain was ready - WP JIC/Prevent maint - - - HILUXs then became a hobby - I'd search for Low mile/Bargains - Typically add all the SR5 upgrades, lots of soap/water & sometimes paint - would drive 6mo/1year or so & sell after I found the next - never a prob selling - $1500 was least profit IIRC - 14 drivers - 2 for parts Bought my 1st MJ, a stock 87 in 2010 - Rust free 4X4 auto air 4.0L - added PW,PL,PM,B seats, console, leather, FoxWood & more - Repaint & had a great looking 140K DD - Sold to a Fella not too far away - Part of his bucket list I'm afraid - I plan on buying back, GL willing my health - - - Current PU/DD is an 89 - Extra nice also - POs did a few DA Mods but no real probs correcting - bought one XJ for parts My last Hilux was an Estate sale - Genuine 29K, no rust, no frills 4X4 extended cab - Did a repaint, added air, PS, factory bronze glass, all SR5 brown int incl pw, pl, pm, seats, console & remote, all SR5 ext chrome, - DD wine colored show stopper - The truck I was never gonna sell . . . . . Concerning stock 85 Toyota trucks Vs Jeep MJs - - IMO: Mechanical - Can't beat the 22re - HG typical 200K - T chain 100-200K - Only gripe was the steering knuckle grease seals/whatever they're called - 50-60k replace - TPS on injected eng was minor pain to adj - No RMS leaks - No OF leaks - Most everything easy to work on if/when - I know nothing about the AMC 2.5 or the Toy turbo - Jeep 4.0L is the way to go if you want HP - My 89 has a 91 Ho & I love it - No comparison - 4 liter MJs flat get it Body - Rust prob on made in Calif beds & frame dog leg esp near gas tank - Toy bed super easy to remove - No cab probs - No rusted floors - Can still get Bedside panels - Fiberglass beds if you wanna pay - Jeep rust probs well doc'ud Interior - Toss up - Both easy to upgrade/repair - Jeeps cab is wider - Toyota had x cab in 85, not too hard to come by - Suspension - Toss up - Go as high/low as you want - Although in stock form the Jeep has a much nicer ride, by quite a bit - that all changed in 86 but this is about 85s - - - If you want firm try a toyota one ton - A good friend has a pristine 85 ton & another guy I'm acquainted with has an 84 with an alum dump flat bed he fabed - both fantastic trucks - neither of the creeps will sell - - - All 80s import trucks were held to the HD brakes, springs, gvw & tow spec thanks to the Chicken Tax - Google it - interesting reading if you're into pickups or Cliff Clavin type stuff - - No DW inna Toyota BTW - - 4WD Toys have 6 lug same as Chevy & others rims Parts availability - Toss up - Gazillions of XJ/MJ made - Ditto for Hilux/4runner - One thing many aren't aware of is JDM parts from Japan - Wife's niece - Her husband was stationed in Japan a few back & he could send the stuff free APO - - I added AC to 4 toyotas - Easy & Dash removal is also EE - Don't know but this mod doesn't sound so nice inna Jeep Lots of Nit picking stuff concerning this MaryAnn/Ginger thing like WTF goes on with the keys locked in & the wife's once again needed/lost the spare - I drilled my Toyotas knobs so a wire hook grabbed easily - No biggie-wish I didn't know-inna MJ wi PL - Can't put a HiLux grill in upside down for that Arkansas look. Can't go wrong with either IMO - MJs cost less - Only 2 other MJs I've seen in my part of world - Lots of 2nd gen Yotas running around - My 89 gets lots of attention - So did my 85 - LOL - pick your poison!
