    Tools

Don't off road, on purpose anyway, so my carry tools needs are minimal - - - - Most important is my cell phone, then, in the cab are the factory tool/jack/wheel change stuff & a tire plug kit in the glove comp - - In the bed box is/are jumper cables, small 12V tire inflator, 40 pc 3/8 drv socket set, 10 thru 19mm combo wrenches, couple flat & philips SDs, slip joint & needle nose pliers, box knife & in a trash bag: duct tape, few cable ties, old but still good fuel filter, few old spark plugs & wires & few feet mechanics wire - Mostly inexpensive HF stuff - on the DS front tire valve stem is a metal cap with the stem core removal/install thingy/whatever it's called - Used to carry Fix a Flat but never used it & can got so old looking that I lost confidence & tossed it. Also an autograph book in case I run into Elvis at the local Quick Trip. Been lucky :wrench:
  8. TASTE? I like the way you think! Haven't had sex in so long I've forgotten what it tastes like Hey, whats oral sex with an 80 year old taste like? . . . . Depends. This site's all right - - Never had this level of fun on others when I was into Toyota's ;)
  9. MVUSSE - I didn't work in that area either - - I was educated about motor oils back when by 2 friends who are petroleum engineers - actually 3 of them, but Mike went on to get a phd in chemistry & focused on industrial water treatment - Regardless, They set me straight on all the multi-viz BS I'd gleaned from Popular Mechanics, Motor Trend & the like - Bob & Don worked in sales for Shell & from them I learned of rotella - used it in my '56 T-Bird & continued on with it - - - Anyway, it is the 2nd # that is the base stock - - EAGLE - - No oil flows well when cold - viscosity is resistance to flow at temperature - I've forgotten where the viz chart stops-can not be measured-on the frigid end - ditto for the other end when it starts to burn - - anyway, I'm old enuff 2 remember also - Used to buy oil at a scratch & dent for 6-7 cents qt as a kid/college student & cried when all they had was the 10-12 cent stuff - - - Also believe we have Japan to thank, more than anything else, for engine longevity or at least they forced Detroit to get real with things - - Helped a friend replace a head gasket on his 175k or so Honda IIRC, back about '81-'82 & was thunderstruck at the almost compleat lack of a cylinder ridge - wizardry? - Nah, just better mfg materials - put my reamer away & used the hone to remove the mostly carbon ring from the 4 holes - b4 then I knew 50k to 80-90k hone time mostly & over 90k reamer 4 sure - no bout a doubt it - - - The miracles started with the Demming award/prize/method - Part of the Marshall Plan HORNBROD - - Good 2 know about the CHEVRON & it's zinc content - - Guess I'll be making a switch END OF LECTURE - - VIYA CON HUEVOS!

  11. Your trucks PO wasn't off base using 40wt - especially so considering he was into air cooled v dubs & motorcycles - assuming he too lived in NM or another normally warm part of the US - - - - The factory info recommends 40 and 50 BASE oil for the warmest ambient temperature range and 30 BASE for the other two - - - the 2nd number in a multi vis ID is the oil base from which it's made/formulated & roughly corresponds to straight weight classification - - - - The 1st # in multi vis ID indicates how the oil will flow at start up - - at the start up temperature-whatever it may be - - -Operating temperature is another thing - - - 210F/thereabouts has been considered normal OT for some time & all W30s flow the same at that temp - - 0W30 5W30 10W30 all have the same viscosity at 210F - - - 10W40 15W40 20W40 will flow the same as a 30 base at 210F but have to be around 220F to do so - - - 20W50 ditto except in the 230/240F operating range - Thus you'll see 50 BASE recommendation for air cooled, heavy towing, warm climes & such - nothing wrong with straight weight except for maybe a little harder to find - - I read where some like racers, boat & aircraft prefer/specify it because no viscosity modifiers - - - Anyway,go by the 2nd # if you want more oil p for bearing clearance, op temp, whatever - - - - As an aside, just to stir it a little more, the Volkswagen flat 4, legendary for its durability - did not have an oil filter - not until sometime around 1972 IIRC - - - We build them good in Germany, eh Heine?
