When I replaced my bench with buckets in the '88, I had to replace the female ends. I ended up getting a really nice set of AMC logo ones but one of the male ends would not click. I compared the two male ends and sure enough they were different, why? I don't know. I ended up grinding the problematic one to match the other and all worked perfectly.

No, there should be two posts that sit in grommets in the frame crossmember. Those slots are for the fan shield on the passenger side or auxiliary fan on the driver side. This info is for the 4.0L, not sure of the 2.5L.
