That black cap is fine. That’s what my ‘90 had when I purchased it new. I think the one that split is a different aftermarket one. I’ve seen some ‘87s in the junk yard that had a bracket attached to that threaded piece instead of the strap.

There are three steel retainers each with three threaded studs. The nuts (10mm??) may have sunk past the plastic inner fender splash guard

But the VIN has a T in position 5, a J indicates 4WD and Body Code is TL61. @jdog can you verify if the VIN is a T or J when running the last 6 numbers? Thanks

Nice father and son project! Does the RENIX monitor show the O2 sensor readings swing from about 0.2 to 4.8 constantly? That’s what should happen, I’ve had issues with after market O2 sensors. Check resistance between A&B on the sensor, should be 5-7Ω. Post the VIN in the registry to get a build sheet.
