engine accessories left on
JZLAJeep replied to tarmac2dirt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Only done this once in a junk yard back in 2022. We pulled the engine with the transmission attached to get the AX-15 transmission out. At the time it made sense to use for some reason to pull the whole drive train rather than lay in the dirt trying to get the transmission out. We left nearly everything attached, but I do see that the front clip, radiator, etc. was removed already. I've attached a few pictures from that day. -
New to the comanches world!

That's awesome! -
Came across a 97+ bumper and factory fog lights at the local junk yard that I couldn't pass up. Now trying to decide what to do with it. One of the fog lights is broken, but we have identical fog lights pulled off of a ZJ from a previous junk yard trip that we haven't been able to use because the brackets were wrong for a MJ/XJ. The fog light bracket is the win with the lights. What there is to like: The fog lights recess into holes in the bumper end caps Straight bumper with both end caps in good condition What's not to like: Bumper end caps are not compatible with 84-96 front fender flares without modification The bumper appears to be the same shape as an 84-96 bumper, but with several extra holes and slots, making it less than ideal to repurpose with 84-96 end caps Options to make this work: Install the factor fog lights under an existing 84-96 bumper and cut the air dam Keep the factory fog lights on the 97+ bumper and acquire and install 97+ front fender flares Keep the factory fog lights on the 97+ bumper and cut the bumper end caps to not interfere with the pre-97 front fender flares. Leaning toward option 3, but wanna hear how others have tackled this. I suspect that most of you that install a 97+ front clip also replace the front fender flares with 97+?

As I learned on the farm, "we don't fix things that work."

I'm a Civil Engineer and I discovered today that one of my reference books has drawings of Jeeps in it! 21 slot grille and everything. They are XJs, but close enough.

I like the color too. Haven't owned a blue one before. The paint looks great from 20 feet... There is one tear in the driver seat that we hope to mend, otherwise the interior is really good.

I like this thinking.

As I understand it, the engine is supposed to run at 215 degrees and the electric fan is supposed to come on at 210 degrees. Sounds like 220 isn't outrageously high, but your e-fan should be kicking on.

I guess we can aspire to be this guy, "How A Tennessee Man Amassed The World’s Largest Junkyard Of Jeep Cherokee XJs" https://www.theautopian.com/how-a-tennessee-man-amassed-the-worlds-largest-junkyard-of-jeep-cherokee-xjs/

Good eye! Yes, it's like this one beat up two other XJs and stole their roof rack cross bars.

How many Jeeps are too many? Asking for a friend... We have five at the house now. They keep following us home like lost puppy dogs. The Mrs. is thinking this may become her around town car, which sounds good as it's a reason to keep it!

Windshield Glass Replacement
JZLAJeep replied to kriswinner's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That's what we've done too. I asked the glass installer to give me back the metal trim, but no regrets with the rubber seal. Don't have to worry about it flying off or coming off in a car wash. -
I've done exactly this before. Certainly something to consider. I had to "buy" the vehicle back, which meant the insurance company subtracted $400 from what they were going to pay me.

Son started working at O'Reilly's a few months ago so we've leaned full into that one. His employee discount is VERY nice. The discount varies by part, but is usually around 40% off. With the employee discount the prices are similar to Amazon or Rock Auto, where we were previously buying our parts. Finding parts in stock is now the challenge. Sometimes it's still faster and easier to buy online. Prior to his job at O'Reilly's we would tend toward NAPA.

Did a few mods to the front end. Added a front mounted hitch and a chrome bumper. Both components were used, but match the truck well enough. The challenge of buying used was that we didn't have the spacers and brackets needed for the installations, but after some fab we got there. Before: After. Have to pay attention to catch the front hitch. I'm now kicking myself for not picking up the chrome bull bar I saw on Marketplace a couple years back. The 2 door XJ also got a grille guard. Fabricated new brackets from scratch based on factory tow hook brackets from our 4 door XJ.

So sorry to hear that!

Yes! Ship with some assembly required (i.e. welding, painting)?

I think you definitely need to convert that note pad to a write up!

A project that someone started, but didn't finish. The MJ body looks pretty good. https://www.facebook.com/share/1ArwWdRRtP/

That's really cool! How compatible is this with other years? Is this the infrared system like what came from the factory on my 95 XJ or something different?

89 being parted in OR
JZLAJeep replied to JZLAJeep's topic in Craigslist/Marketplace/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Agreed. I did ask about the dash since we have a dark blue interior with cracked dash. The dash does have some cracks. Here are the photos I was sent. -
Been in contact with this guy. Still some parts left and he is willing to ship. Plans to scrap it in mid-August. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1646847576030585/?referralSurface=messenger_lightspeed_banner&referralCode=messenger_banner

For what it's worth, my 2-door XJ was rear ended a few months ago. Worried about my XJ being totaled so I told the guy that ran into me that I could go through his insurance or we could settle for cash. At first he said insurance, but he called me later and asked me to get a cash price. I've got a contact at an autobody shop that is willing to operate in cash after hours and he was willing to straighten the frame, paint the rear bumper, and some misc. odds and ends for $750 cash and my son picked up a new to us bumper at the junk yard. I asked the guy that hit me for $850 to get the vehicle fixed, buy the bumper, and pay for my urgent care bill. He agreed and we took care of it with a cash transaction. Never involved insurance at all. Was a LOT cheaper for everyone involved. The XJ is back to as good as it was prior to the crash (it had already been rear ended before For some reason that XJ is a crash magnet).
