What are you guys running? I'm coming from a V8 small block background with the deep throaty exhausts. So what do you put on these inline 6 engines? I don't want to wake the neighbors but I do want it to sound like a truck not a soccer mom mobile. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

So I finally got the time to do my brakes. Pretty much replaced everything on the front including the bearings. Everything new. Next time home I'm going to have somebody do the rear. I hate doing drums. Worth it to me to pay somebody else. Doing this so I know whats there. Mainly worried about wheel cylinders. (Past experience and a wreck that cost me some money) But if it comes apart I'm putting all new stuff back. As to why my brakes were horrible? I don't know. I got brakes now!! I have plenty of pedal, and I can lock them up. I think somebody rebuilt the calipers instead of replacing. It had new shiny fittings and such on them. Maybe something off with one of the pistons???? I checked the booster and it appears to be working. It's getting vacuum and the line is good. It does have some corrosion on the bottom but I think I'm going to leave it for now. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

I don't believe I would use anything off of that. When they get crispy all that metal gets hot and distorted and/or weakened. I wouldn't trust anything off of it. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

Depends on the vehicle. Is it dependable mechanically? If yes then update all normal services, new belts, are hoses in good order? Good battery. You say it has a shimmy. Check and replace all ball joints and tie rod bushings etc. Different vehicle but, Last year I drove my 99 Suburban from NC to Seattle thru South Dakota then back thru Utah and Texas. The three years before that I had replaced the engine, all new ball joints and everything rubber. New shocks, new rear end and new front end/steering. New brakes, not just pads, all new brake system. New stereo also. As part of the trip I took a spare belt, air compressor, new spare tire, complete tool set, installed a new battery, distributor cap, and rotor. I took a set of plug wires just because I had them. Some spare wire and butt connectors. In Nebraska I had to locate and install new wiring plug for the MAF sensor. Coming home in Tennessee I had to install a new throttle position sensor. Soon after getting home a new coil, all three were reused from old engine. Inspect your wiring. That was my biggest issue. It's old and brittle.. Also look hard at all those vacuum lines and all the little rubber boots that connect them to things. Also I went offroading in Utah and lots of places in Wyoming and Montana do not have cell coverage. I rented a satellite phone from Verizon. Just in case. You can rent by the month or the week. Although if more than a month it's cheaper to buy one. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

Like red blooded Americans...we ate at a Mexican restaurant. And man it was good. Escaped the heat and humidity of the southeast AND rented a condo in Boone, NC for a long weekend. 66 degrees at top of this mountain. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

Installed a new steering wheel yesterday. Found it in a Jeep salvage yard. Came out of an XJ. Unfortunately the guy knew what he had and just how good of shape it was in. Leather is super smooth and still supple with no blemishes. Paid more than I wanted but it was the first one I found that was in better shape than the one I had. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

Well I found out why my intermittent wipers didn't work. The module was gone. Thanks to@SatiricalHen for module. They work perfectly now. Now if my brake parts would ever show up I can fix them and actually drive it again. Just chipping away at it little by little. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

Saw one yesterday while I was taking my wife to lunch. It was black and orange with a chrome grill sitting in downtown New Bern, NC. Only the second one I've seen in this area since I bought mine last year. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

The "Grandpa Jeep" as some friends say...
tugboat95 replied to rtferguson_39's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Lucky find not only for that relay cover but especially the clips holding it. Not familiar with the 4 cylinders but was it converted to an open cooling system? My 4.0 has a closed system. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original -

Grandpa or not, that's a good looking Comanche. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original -
Talk to me about the proportioning valve. If I'm going with a new master and booster may as well replace it. Are they available? Do you "clean" or rebuild them?. Can they be deleted? 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

I've bought mine in December and I've had two offers. One from my Dad not sure if that one counts. Another from a co worker that is a crazy Jeeper. He's been looking for driveable one with no rust for years. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

Yeah mine is all stock and will stay that way. I will do the wheels first and check vacuum. Then go from there. After some online reading I'm almost convinced its the booster/vacuum issue. I'll find out when I get home next week. (Depending on wife's honey do list). Great thing about my job....every 21 days of work, I get 21 days off. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

What do you mean "almost no peddle movement before it bottoms out"? That's impossible, unless your peddle starts out sitting much too close to the floor. It doesn't hardly move. Clutch goes to floor. Brake is nowhere near it. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

Well my plan is to replace everything on the wheels. They are all original and complete pieces of rust. That HAS to be done. Then do a test. If it not improved I'll change out the booster and go ahead and do the master cylinder as well. If I gotta take it off may as well put a new one back. After reading Rock autos test, I'm leaning towards the booster being bad. But I will check vacuum lines before I spend some money. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

How hard are boosters to find? Brake parts weren't on the shelves everywhere. I did find them but I had to order them. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

I'm on the west coast for another week so I can't test it. But the pedal does not drop when I start it. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

Hard to press. It's not spongy. And doesn't go to the floor. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

My brakes are horrible. They stop it but I've narrowly avoided 2 rear end collisions already when the car ahead of me slammed on the brakes. I actually slow down faster using the gears. I have already ordered new rotors, pads, bearings and calipers. Previous owner recently replaced the lines. I will have the rear drums replaced (I hate doing drumbrakes). Just waiting to get home. Is this normal? Do I need to look at master cylinder or booster? Brakes work, just not on par with my more modern vehicles. All most no pedal movement before it bottoms out. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

Help needed to find A/C Hose
tugboat95 replied to Richard 91's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Done it several times on different makes. Never had a problem. A 10 dollar line on an Explorer was a lot cheaper than 750 the dealer wanted. 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original
