MayDay!! - Hard Accel Killed Idle
derf replied to AnotherOldJeepGuy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You don't need gorilla torque for manifold bolts. If you do, you have more problems to deal with. Now, the pinion nut on a Dana 80, that's gorilla torque... -

If you look close at the end of the extension, you can see that it's not straight like a normal extension. It allows the socket to wobble when you put it on. The only real drawback is that they're a little weaker than a standard extension. The 3/8" drive is fine for manifold bolts. The 1/4" extensions arent too hard to shear off with a good size ratchet. Ask me how I know. I had forgotten about those extensions. They should work too. -

My CJ definitely has more room to maneuver. I plan on attaching the manifolds to the engine before I drop it into my MJ. Which is cheating a little. -

I came in from the bottom for several of them. Even some of the exposed top ones don't have a straight path so the wobble lets you get the extension out past the manifold to get a useful sweep on the ratchet. -

I use the wobble sockets on my CJ with the 258. I haven't pulled/installed manifolds on a 4.0 yet but I will soon. I suspect the wobble sockets I have will get some use. -

Wobble sockets on an extension work well too. Something like this... https://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-84917N-Universal-Impact-Socket/dp/B00UM687VG/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=3NBXWZYA0WP6K&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.6K4ar_rF-VL699eznTCOKRJo2KDsoGB-pRvzaNZFxMaTSRTD2LfVisraArVYSc2TQKk0QR6E2WdtLZyFsh7BS3I9dzu0nnGQvbrj8dvcI_wSWr5V2r_A9WHXnqsQSNSBaWVMT3al5lpWHm9JgVSNiTkbenlVMZ35NDsoSipG6C3tX-_Mqi0Q8DQIHdPp5-kSKrHMGzdxrAlh6vIjuKcgpw.Q_sWnKVtpJrmH5EPLyZO1Hzi4MpY1-CYbo8Eo7t5OFY&dib_tag=se&keywords=wobble+socket+set+sae&qid=1776697907&sprefix=wobble+socket+set+%2Caps%2C356&sr=8-4 -

Dark Sand Interior Color Question
derf replied to robfg67's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Could just be sun faded. -
The upper was definitely loose. Torque spec on it is 100 ft-lbs. But the driver side is back together. I'm going to hook up the new brake line after I flush the old system.

So... Colonoscopy prep. I can guarantee that cleanses you more effectively than anything else. It's just a little unpleasant...

Jeep 4.0 Automatic not changing gears.
derf replied to Gradinen's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
One question I have. On the shifter, is it P R N D 2 1 Or P R N D 3 1-2 -
-
Ain't that the truth...

The upper ball joint nut was almost loose. It took a breaker bar to loosen the lower nut. Then it took some persuasion to get the lower joint to let go. Fortunately I didn't need to break out the oxy-acetylene.

Question about gear ratios and carrier breaks
derf replied to TheSiLvAPython's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
A Dana 35 break is between 3.31 and 3.55 so you would need a new carrier for it. Either that or thick cut 3.55 gears if they make those. The dana 44 break is between 3.73 and 3.92 so you're good there. The AMC 20 has a break between 2.73 and 3.08 so you would be good there. That's the 3 axles that came from the factory. -
Not much work on the actual truck today. But I did rearrange a bunch of stuff to get ready for when the CJ is done in a week or three. The long bed I picked up at the junkyard got moved onto the truck that it's destined for. It's sitting on the axles that are for the truggy with lift springs in the front and an SOA on a Dana 80 in the rear right now. But the key is that it's not blocking my gate anymore. Then I moved the parts donor grey MJ over to the gate so I can pull it around and strip it. Then the chief is behind it. Ready to roll in to the garage when the parts donor is done.

It's hard to torque to spec. Besides, the tool will be here tomorrow.

So back brakes buttoned up. Starting in on the front. As long as I'm there I'm going to strip it all the way down and rebuild the outers. New ball joints, new shaft u-joints, new bearings, new calipers with pads and rotors, new brake hoses, all the seals, and I'm upgrading the hubs. With all of the tools I have, you'd think I could just knock this all out quickly. But I'm short one key tool. A 2-1/16" spindle nut socket. So I'm stuck for a little bit until I get one delivered. It'll be here Sunday.

If you get a Detroit for 3.92 and down (or is it 3.73 and down?) the thick gears will work for 4.09 and up. There's nothing specific to the Detroit that prevents you from using thick cut gears other than the carrier break that applies to all Dana 44 differentials.

Added a few T10 options, including the Richmond aftermarket versions.

Hopefully the student loans don't get in the way of that goal. Congrats on making it through.

I figured there would be some to add.
