Is the 2.8l really that bad?
WesD replied to nolehynaws's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have to disagree with a lot here - I had a S10 Blazer with the 2.8 V6 and the 700R4 transmission. The 2.8 made it to 200k and was at the end of it's life when I sold the old beast. Never had a problem with it other than replacing the intake gasket (common failure), matter of fact I kept the same spark plugs in it for 65000 miles. Carb worked fine, and one time it even took the family to school when the good ol 2.5 Renix wouldn't even hit it was so cold outside. They weren't fast, but back in the day when the 305 V8 was putting out 160 HP, a 110 HP V6 wasn't terrible. Parents also had a midsize GM car with the 2.8 that was 150k miles when sold, no problems. As long as it runs fine, drive it. And the S10 only came with the 2.5 4 (2.2 after 1991), 2.8 V6, and then 4.3 V6. -
Nothing works except the engine. It all worked fine before I removed the dash, and the bulkhead connector. Dadgummit.

1987 Jeep Comanche 4x4, 2.5, base Bought brand new 5/12/1988 by my dad. Total cost was around $6500 and the payments were $112.68 a month for 24 month loan. I remember the test drive, the day he brought it home, and I recall seeing the window sticker in the early 90s in the glove box. Unfortunately all the paperwork is gone. I drove this truck many times in high school, to my job, on my first date, and to my first day of college in the big city. My dad last drove it in 1999. It sat for the next 20 years in the woods. It was waiting in the woods when 9/11 happened, the great financial crisis, GWB inauguration (2x), Obama (2x), and Trumps' first inauguration. I bought 3 new Fords, 4 new Chevys, and 2 new GMCs during this timeframe. Lived in 2 different states, graduated college twice, got married, bought a few houses, etc. Had 5 dogs, a few different jobs, and flew about 2 million miles around the world for work. In short, a lot changed between 1999 and 2019. And now it's sitting in my garage to spend the rest of its days. It feels just like 1996 all over again every time I drive it, except I'm a little heavier now, and just a tiny bit smarter, but I know a lot less now than I did back then. This picture is around 1990.

MJ - it's mine. I'll add it into the registry.

You'll be back in the dealer again in no time. Just last year 17Million new automobiles were sold. The annual rate right now? I'd guess 3-4Million. It will be back to 17 Million again soon, so just hang in there and keep up the good attitude. I very much appreciate your help as well. Care to do a vin decode? 1JTHL6511HT008079

Tested out the 4WD today. Broke off the shift arm on the vacuum servo. Transfer case will shift from 4H->N->4L and back, but never into 2H. Confirmed linkage is good, and the detent is good for 2H. Will change the oil tomorrow and give it another shot (NP 231). Figured out nothing is working, no lights, or blower motor. They all worked before. I checked the grounds under the hood and the dash, looked ok. Thoughts?

anyone got one they want to sell? Need a functioning fuel gauge.
-
She drives. Fuel tank is easy to install once the driveshaft is removed. Got some work to do still, lots of it. Clutch is good after bleed, feels great. Brakes don't feel strong but they stop. Need to do a full change of transmission and axle fluids. Now the fuel sender isn't working. Rats. Then start on the paint work.
-
Ha, that won't help me get the fuel tank in the straps! I might be pulling the driveshaft.
-
Seat brackets fabbed up and test fit is good! The fuel sender was rebuilt last summer and look at that rust! Having a hell of a time getting the gas tank up, any ideas?
-
Clutch flushed and bled. New parking brake cable installed. Rear WIndow installed. That was very difficult and I'll never do another window again. Well worth paying to have it done.

Floor repair looks great

Floors done. Heater box and ac installed. Had to build a wire harness for the ac control. Does anyone know if the ac will work without the evaporator freeze switch hooked up?

Bringing 87 Comanche back from the grave
WesD replied to Liketosmash's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Yes, welcome to the Sunshine state! Great progress, look forward to seeing it run. Bux - We are neighbors. -
Edit: Dear God I wrote a wall of text, anyways here's some recent pics of progress (working on brakes).
-
OK I'll try that, thanks. Did you find any rust under the carpets? I'm guessing yes if that seat belt bolt was rusty.
-
Good looking truck. I hope mine is that clean when I'm done. I also have the problem with the drivers side rusted seatbelt bolt. What kind of drill tap deal did you use? I'm thinking to weld a nut on the top of my bolt and try to back it out, else I'll cut it and do the drill tap (but have never done this before). Keep up the good work.

My 2.5 I'd guess us 700-900. Once I get the gas tank in I'll hook up the timing light and get an accurate #.
-
No trouble at all. It actually looks great in person.
-
Pete are you still around? you're welcome to come by and see my Comanche project.

Still moving ahead. Interior is stripped out down to metal. Got new floor pans, just need to get the welder out of the box and go to work learning to weld. Wheels are stripped, sanded, and painted. New rubber courtesy of labor day sales. And finally, got the bed mounted up. Body lines look good, need to get the vinyl stickers removed so it matches better. I had hoped to have the bed fixed and resprayed before mounting it up, but the estimates for the bed alone were $2400-$3000 from three different shops! I budgeted $3000 for the entire truck to get body work. Next plan is to tow the truck somewhere up to GA and get the body work done with more reasonable shops.

Oh no. Hope it didn't contaminate your lines, condenser, and evaporator. Make sure you don't have metal shavings in the oil (I'm guessing you used PAG)
