A904 Transmission Problems
eaglescout526 replied to Peanut_butter_mj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well first thing we’re all probably gonna ask is how is the fluid? Burnt? Low? -
Looking for the right belts
eaglescout526 replied to DzienManche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well it shouldn’t be that different but at the same time it is a GM engine and they could be pulling from other GM models that may or may not have the same set up AMC ran with. But knowing AMC, they probably used the same exact parts GM used. -

The three numbers I provided are the only numbers for the original belt. There isn’t any more updated numbers after that. You can always try other places and see what their system cross references with the numbers provided. -

S9433662->JY013561->B0013561, this is for the compressor belt with either factory or American Air. -

I could provide the OEM numbers if that’ll help. -
I have one. My XJ came with this option and the PO swapped the lighter and light in place.

If you’re trying to adjust your ISA (idle speed actuator), what you need to do is unplug it on a warm engine, plug in a tach or use your in dash tach if applicable and start the engine. The engine should be running about 3k rpm. If not the screw needs to be adjusted to read 3k.

My exact thoughts too Pete. I got used to it for a while but I figured since I knew where to get the switches and harness, I figured why the hell not add that tidbit. Now I need to see about adding other lamps to the rest of the head liner. -

Major progress! New FI harness is swapped in. Committed Jeep blaspheme some might say but i mated the hatch harness by cutting off the old connectors that I have no idea what they are, they look molex, and put on the proper connectors and here we are: And yes everything works with no issues what so ever. Gave my mail man anxiety when he saw what I was doing haha. But no fuses popped and all is good. Just the fuel gauge doesn’t read at all cause I haven’t swapped the sending unit yet. I might adapt the old connector to the new one just for the sake or knowing how much gas I have left. Also I upgraded the rear doors to have the door switch. Funny thing about this is the holes are there and plugged…but not threaded. Talk about wild. And of course I threaded the switches in and here we are: The lights come on! Luckily I snapped the drivers side before putting it switch to show that this is what they looked like I had no idea that this was an option back in the day but at this point, why not just buy a two door? But I digress, maybe if you have passengers, there’s no need for the lights to come on I suppose. Ehh another 84 oddity I will remember. Lots up next. -
That is correct. Both tanks are the same but the neck inside the tank the dumps the fuel in is longer and stops the nozzle at the fuel pump from putting more fuel in because it’s the full 16 gallons.
-
Youre thinking the 18 Pete under the short beds. Mine had the 16 gallon and still used the three straps before converting to the 23 gallon tank. But that being said the 20 gallon tank code is more common to XJs and our tank code probably got replaced at some point after the MJ was phased out.
-
Well 86 “red” interior is weird. It looks like you have the mid garnet that is about to go to cordovan for 87. But you also have an early 86 which should be more garnet. It looks original to the MJ and probably is.
-
Yeah some of them are wrong so take them with a grain of salt as Pete says. The axle ratios is what we seem to find to be commonly wrong with the build sheets. Except the D44, that seems to show up right.
-
Yes. This info is unique to your VIN. I can’t pull these out of thin air like my co workers think with parts they can’t find haha.

So I picked up some XJW goodies today. They are the windows with the chrome trim in the molding for the rear quarters and rear hatch. I still am undecided if I want to go full chrome or do a mix of both black and chrome. Oh I also grabbed an upgrade that struck me by surprise, Chunk doesnt have the switches for the rear doors to turn on the interior lights when the rear door opens, so I got both sides and their harness today. I think I am going to try to figure out how to get the rear latch to do the same at some point in the future as well. As I inch closer to putting the interior together, I find more things to do while I am in there. I am going to do the window sweeps next along with the channel guides closest to the fixed windows of each door. Hopefully thereafter or sooner, depending on when I get the 2.5L TBI harness, I can integrate the system sentry with the TBI harness rather than integrate it now since it goes through the same hole as the ECU harness into the firewall. I might start prepping the removal of the present engine management harness and toss it in the engine bay just so I have an XJ to move still. -

Power locks are working, found a sacrificial harness for the female metri 280 plug I needed. Got that settled in, plugged it and power into the block and the power locks work. They need some help and I’ll probably do a relay upgrade for them in the future to help them out but for now they work and will get lubed for even more help which is probably why these solenoids have such a hard time. Bonus, the power seats are working as they should! Woot! This is gonna be a fun luxurious XJ. -

First cross body harness is set up. Mirrors are working. Currently the locks are not and I believe that’s due to not having the metri 280 connectors at the moment to correct this issue. -

So I committed some slight blaspheme. I added the power seat switches to both seats and I think for being a completely different seat base than the power seats, I think I landed the install pretty good for both. I also got both passenger doors equipped with the locking solenoids and got the wiring harness for the rear door set up as well. Next will be to install the solenoid on the drivers side and start converting the rear harness to mate with the new body harness. -
Late 88 and on is normal to have a bunch of codes. The early 88 and down have little to nothing codes due to transfer of ownership and a flood in the basement where Chrysler stored records prior to digitizing all the documents.
